Hey there everyone and welcome to my short review of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9”
Tablet.
This is the big brother of the 7” version and the idea behind it is to directly
compete with the iPad which incidentally is still a little larger measuring 9.7” in
comparison.
The Kindle Fire HD 8.9” now offers a bigger processor so we’ve gone from the
1.2 to a 1.5 gigahertz dual core processor which is available in multiple sizes –
16, 32 and 64 GB’s.
At the time of writing this review you can grab the 16 GB version for $229 with
the special offer and WiFi only. The 32GB version with the special offer would
cost $399 but this has WiFi + 4 LTE AT&T. The 64 GB version would set you
back $499 again with the special offer applied and as with the 32GB version
also with WiFi + 4 LTE AT&T.
With regards to its capacity, these still DO NOT have an SD card slot, so the
only capacity they have is built in to the device.

Okay moving on now:
So if you decide to buy one of these babies, when you receive it you’ll get the
traditional Amazon frustration free packaging and you simply pull the tab strip
and tear the packaging open to reveal the device.
In the top half of the box there’s a small card with a very brief description on
usage, however the device is fully loaded with usage instructions.
Upon opening the box and removing the kindle, I noticed that the only
accessory which comes with this device is a micro USB charging cable and it
doesn’t come with the wall adapter, but with that said, you can use a Mac or
PC to charge your Kindle.
Alternatively if you really do insist on having the wall adapter then they are
available from Amazon at a reasonable $10 or so.

Okay, when you take the kindle out of its plastic wrap packaging, my first
impressions are it has a soft touch plastic feel to its rear side which makes it
really good for gripping, however it does leave fingerprints which can be quite
stubborn to get rid of.
Also on the rear of the device is a black plastic strip bearing the hallmark name
‘Kindle’ and at each end of this strip is the dual stereo speakers which is cool as
all the older kindles only had a single mono speaker.
You’ll also find the headphone jack on the right hand side of the device so you
are able to listen to your music or movies in complete peace and quiet should
you choose to do so.
The volume controls and power button can also be found on the right hand
side of the device as well. These are very flush fitting and can be a little difficult
to feel especially if you have large hands.
On the bottom of the kindle you’ll find two very similar looking ports. The first
being the micro USB port and the other a micro HDMI port for outputting
video to a high definition TV.
On the front of the kindle you’ll find the front facing camera which is capable
of recording video at 720 p which is good for Skype or other teleconferencing
apps.
Now, if you order your kindle from Amazon, the cool thing with this is it will
already be registered with your Amazon account details which means all you
have to do is log into your wireless network, choose your time zone and
connect your Twitter and/or Facebook account if you choose to do this.
If there are any software updates, these will automatically be applied before
you access your kindles home screen. Once you see the home screen if you’ve
done everything correctly you should see all your purchases on the screen.
Okay now the display really is what this is all about. After all it’s a larger HD
than its predecessor. The resolution is an impressive 1920 x 1200 LCD IPS
display with a PPI of 254 which is capable of playing back full 1080 p video. This
makes this a really strong competitor with the iPads 265 PPI.

The display does a very good job, it’s very sharp and presents vivid colors and it
also minimizes glare. It also looks good when tilted on an angle, which
compared to older versions, is a step in the right direction.
The high resolution display also means that text looks extremely smooth and
sharp. There’s no obvious distortion or jagged pixilation so if you are a heavy
reader then this is definitely something for you to think about.
The screen proportions of the Kindle Fire HD8.9” are 16 x 10 aspect ratio in
comparison to the iPads larger 4 x 3 aspect ratio, so the kindle handles
everyday widescreen movies a lot better.
Now onto the user interface…
In short Amazon are utilising android 4.0 under its own skin where the home
screen with a carousel of recently open applications, books, magazines, web
pages and so on.

At the top of the screen there’s a list of content categories including, games,
apps, books, music, videos, news stand, audiobooks, web, photos and docs.
Now if you click on any one of those you can view the content locally or on
Amazon. You can also jump over to the Amazon store to purchase more
content if you wish.

Also, if you’re an Amazon prime member you will be able to access tons of
other free content including TV shows, movies and books.

On the lower right corner of the screen you also have a favourites menu where
it lets you pin items to it so you can quickly access some of your favourite apps
from the home screen.
There’s also the full web browser with tabbed browsing and bookmarking
functionality which is pretty cool.
Dragging the top bar down on the screen gives you quick access to things like
screen rotation lock, volume, brightness plus many others and this works both
in portrait or landscape view.
I would say that this Kindle Fire HD 8.9” version does perform better and
smoother than the smaller 7” version which is more than likely down to the
more powerful processor.
In saying that though, there are very minor performance issues such as slight
lagging in certain apps, but to be honest it’s not really that bad compared to
older kindles so this is not really be a big deal.
All in all this Kindle Fire HD 8.9” is a nice piece of hardware with the high
quality display and the dual stereo speakers.
