A 1947 Popular Science Monthly article describes an early book vending machine that allowed customers to purchase books automatically without interacting with a store clerk. The machine, called the Book-O-Mat, worked similar to a coin-operated vending machine and held a selection of books behind locked glass doors that would unlock when the proper amount of coins were inserted.
