2. The founding of TC in 1887 greatly reflected the spirit of the times. From 1880 to 1890, The number of students attending school in the United States increased by nearly 3 million, and interest grew in teacher education programs.

5. Grace was inspired by the ideals of “Social Christianity.” She soon founded the Kitchen Garden Association, an organization to help young girls learn household tasks. The teachers were volunteers and, as such, soon realized that they themselves needed to be taught methods of teaching. As a result, the association began classes to teach these volunteers pedagogical methods and theories.

12. Grace convinced Nicholas Murray Butler, a Columbia professor, to become the school’s new president.

14. Under Butler’s leadership… The school began to develop its academic program, offering a two year curriculum with coursework in a variety of fields. In addition to teachers, the school began to train future administrators as well.
18. Russell stressed the importance of a “scientific movement” of education, encouraging the widespread practice of research. He established many research institutions and wrote a number of well-regarded books.
