02. mise en scene notes sheet
1. Mise-en-scene
What does mise-en-scene mean?
It is the French word for “Everything in the scene”, it is also how they use props and
what the audience see.
What are the 6 key areas of mise-en-scene?
Colours,costumes,blocking &performing, setlocation, props lighting
Colour:
How is colour used in the 3 below pictures?
1st image: The split in colour in her hair as if she has 2 personalities. The dress on
the outside is white and The skin of her skin is slightly green, meaning that she does
not care so much with her health and is a bit arrogant. Her clothes like her dress is
black which could be signalling that she is evil.
2nd image: The majority of her clothes shows the colour black, the style of the clothes
makes it look like she is looking down on you. Also her skin colour is pretty much
green signifying that she is like a disease. The background is dark and can be
considered creepy. She has black horns on her head.
3rd image: The dress colour is blue and white, showing that she is innocent. Also can
be shown to look like an angel. The skin colour is normal, to show that she is not
tainted with evil in anyway, she is pure. The black background paired with the bright
blue and white colours shows that she is the light out of the dark and that she is
shining.
Costume:
What can we interpret from these costumes?
2. Mise-en-scene
The 1st image has all the characters wear jackets or a vest, while 2 of the characters
have a hat. One of them has it positioned sideways another that has it positioned in
the normal direction with a slight misalignment. The clothes show off as a way to
look cool, especially with the caps. The jackets are also half zipped, to show that
they are not afraid to show themselves off. The jackets they have also signify that
they do not have much. They need something to wear. But it still could be something
that can be trendy. The wellies not being used in the rain, it shows that maybe she
might not have another pair.
The 2nd image has two people wearing leather jackets coloured black with one of
them having a scarf tied around his neck. The clothing and colour show that they are
dressed as important people and they look like they have serious/professional jobs
to do, especially the expressions on their face.
Props:
Option 1 - You have to provide props for a tense police interview between two
officers and one suspected murderer. Decide what props you would incorporate and
how the actors should be directed to use them.
Option 2 – You have to provide props for a romantic meal between two characters
on their first date. Decide what props you would incorporate and how the actors
should be directed to use them.
Props needed:

napkins, plate, glass, bottle of water/wine.
How would actors be directed to use them:
Silverware to eat, table is where the plate, silverwares, vase with flowers, napkins
and scented candles will be placed. Chairs for them to sit. Table cloth on the table to
add as deco. As well as vase with candles and scented candles.
Location:
Can be a purpose built set or a real location
1. Too perfect and aligned, maybe can be something fantasy related because of
the perfectness of the lawn while it is not techy-looking.
2. Looks like a horror/thriller, it looks like a post-apocalyptic city.
3. Looks like the houses are futuristical, so a sci-fi
Blocking/Performance:
Blocking refers to the positioning and movement of actors within the frame,
3. Mise-en-scene
both in relation to each other and in relation to the camera (which represents
us, the audience)
