1. 1
General Overview of Jahangirnagar University:
Jahangirnagar University is a public university in Bangladesh, located in Savar Upazila,
Dhaka. It is the only one fully residential university in Bangladesh. The university was
established in 1970 by the government of Pakistan by the Jahangirnagar Muslim University
Ordinance, 1970. During the first two years, it operated as a project. Its first Vice-Chancellor,
Professor Mafiz Uddin Ahmad (Ph.D in Chemistry, University of Illinois, Chicago) took up
office on September 24, 1970. The first group of students, a total of 150, was enrolled in
four departments: Economics, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics. Its formal
inauguration was delayed until January 12, 1971, when the university was launched by Rear
Admiral S. M. Ahsan, the Chancellor.
Until 1973, it operated as a project. In 1973 Jahangirnagar Muslim University Act was
amended as Jahangirnagar University Act.
In 2010 the university had a total of 10,500 students, 672 teachers, 206 staffs and 1,200
other employees. The university boasts to have the first ever female Vice-Chancellor of any
public university in Bangladesh.
There are 35 departments under six faculties. But among all these departments we visit at
the Department of Geography & Environment, Urban & Regional Planning, Environmental
science, Geological Science & Archaeology for our assignment. Now I discuss about these
departments is given below:
Department of Geography & Environments:
Geography is one of the four early academic departments at Jahangirnagar University under
the faculty of Social Sciences. The Department started its academic activities with a handful
number of faculties and undergraduate students immediately after the independence of
Bangladesh. Since then, the Department grew gradually and established itself at the
forefront of higher learning institutions in the country. Although comparatively of a recent
origin, the department has produced a number of Ph.Ds, which is highest in the university as
well as among other geography schools in the country.
Departing from the traditional geography, the department placed emphasis on the modern
applied approaches in its academic curricula and research activities suited to the study of
humans and environment in a third world setting. This has attracted geographers from
foreign university and different international links have been established through
collaborative research and student exchange programs. Recently, the name of the
department has been changed to Department of Geography and Environment in order to
make the subject more relevant to the needs of the society. Accordingly, undergraduate and
2. 2
post-graduate curricula have been redesigned to adopt methodologies and techniques of
analysis of environment and development issues.
Department of Urban and Regional Planning:
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning (URP) is a part of Jahangirnagar University,
Bangladesh. The department started its academic activities on 8 April 2000 in response to
the demand for professionals for spatial planning and development.
The profession of Urban and Regional Planning has grown to encompass the use of land,
protection of the environment, economic productivity and the future allocation of physical
and social public resources.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning:
enables practicing planners, aspiring planners, decision makers, and interested
public to understand urban and regional systems, public * decision making,
institutions of planning, and activities of planners;
develops and examines theories and methods useful to understanding urban and
regional systems, public decision making, institutions of planning and activities of
professional planners;
uses and applies these theories and methods to issues of importance to communities
and professionals.
Planning play a role in fields such as:
Land use Planning and Management
Adoption of policies, programs and plans for solving people’s problem
Civic and Utilities services Planning and Management
Environmental Planning and Management
Housing and Community Planning
Transportation and Infrastructure planning and Management
Rural Planning and Development
Regional Development Planning
Disaster management planning
Project Planning and Management
Planning Laws and Administrations
GIS and Remote Sensing
Each academic year the department admits on an average 35 students in the undergraduate
program (BURP). The department offers a four year undergraduate program named BURP
3. 3
(Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning) and a one-year graduate program named MURP
(Masters in Urban and Regional Planning).
Department of Environmental Sciences:
In the view of environmental concern the department of Environmental sciences
established at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh in April 1999 as an interdisciplinary
undergraduate course by integrating all branches of Natural Sciences including technology
management. Internationally Renowned Scientist DR. Sayed Saifullah is the founder
chairmen of the department. The education & research here have been conducted with two
main pillars of vision for the established of the department –“Sustainability” & “Safety of
the Earth”. These are horizontal platforms of the cross disciplinary studies without barriers
between the different field of sciences. They believe that these system lead us to provide
meaningful solutions for the demand concerning an environmentally sustainable future of
the Earth.
Department of Geological Sciences:
Department of Geological Sciences was established in 1986 as to understand the planet
Earth as well as its resources & environment and to produce adequate number of effective
and efficient manpower in the field of geosciences with the objectives of offering Honours
courses in Geological Sciences, and specialized post-graduate courses leading to post-
graduate Diploma, Master of Science (M.S) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD); conducting
research and development in some special areas of Geological Sciences appropriate to the
need of the country; and providing short term training courses to cater to the needs of
different concerned organizations.
Department of Archaeology:
Department of Archaeology, Jahangirnagar University offers undergraduate as well as MSS,
M.Phil and PhD degrees in archaeology. It emphasizes an Archaeological and
interdisciplinary approach, tailoring the program to the needs of the individual. Students are
expected to take advantage of the considerable flexibility in program requirements. Theory,
method and laboratory courses and field work are all regarded as important components in
the curriculum of students in Archaeology, both undergraduate and graduate.
While the Department insists that all graduates become competent field archaeologists, it
takes a broad view of the discipline. Besides many theses on aspects of geo-archaeology,
pre- and proto-historic archaeology, others in recent years have focused on ancient art and
architecture, archaeo-botany, bio-archaeology, environmental archaeology, historic
archaeology, ethnology, ethnoarchaeology, iconography, Epigraphy and Numismatics ,
taphonomy, museum studies and heritage management- to mention only a few. The
Department exercises discretion in admitting students and ensures that their interests

relate to the research and teaching capabilities of the faculty. The Department of
Archaeology is located on the 3rd floor of the New Arts Building at the centre of the main
campus. For more information about the Department, its members, journal and its
programs, we invite you to explore our web site.

GIS Research Activities at Department of Geological Sciences(over the last 5 years):
In Department of Geology Sciences is also working with GIS. But they have no Research
activities. Because GIS is not the main part of Geology. Moreover Geology working with the
help of the GIS are:
GIS is Used as the exploration and exploitation of mineral and hydrocarbon
resources.
GIS is used Petroleum provides gas and oil for vehicle transportation, aggregate and
limestone quarrying (sand and gravel) provides ingredients for concrete for paving
and construction, potash mines contribute to fertilizer, coal to energy production,
precious metals and gems for jewelry, diamonds for drill bits, and copper, zinc and
assorted minerals for a variety of uses.
GIS is also used the study of potential hazards such as volcanoes, landslides, and
earthquakes, and is thus a critical factor for geotechnical studies relating to
construction and engineering.
Remote sensing is used as a tool to extract information about the land surface
structure, composition or subsurface, but is often combined with other data sources
providing complementary measurements.
Radar provides an expression of surface topography and roughness, and thus is
extremely valuable, especially when integrated with another data source to provide
detailed relief.
Remote sensing is not limited to direct geology applications - it is also used to
support logistics, such as route planning for access into a mining area, reclamation
monitoring, and generating base maps upon which geological data can be referenced
or superimposed.
