2. What is the Internet?
Well the internet is the computer network which allows
computer users to connect with computers all over the
world. We use it every day to go on our social networking
sites or to look up something. It is filled with millions and
millions of pages for us to browse. Without the internet, for
many teens like myself and I'm sure many adults and kids
too, life wouldn’t be the same!
3. Domain Names and IP Adresses
The domain name is the address people type in their web
browser to get to your web site for example at school I
would type in ‘BRGS’ in Google to bring up a link to our
schools website. The "real" address is called the IP address
and is a series of numbers, such as 123.23.234.45. I only
know about IP addresses as I have to set mine up on my
games console to be able to play against my friends online!
4. Data Packets and Packet
Switching
Data packets= a way of transferring data in small bits
called packets. This is how most of data is crossed across
the internet.
Packet Switching= It’s the method in which the packets are
transferred.
5. Routers
Wireless models are the most common type of internet
router but there are routers that use wires too. Internet
data comes in to the router from the phone line and is
converted into radio signals. This signal is then
translated by the network card in your computer,
smartphone or games console and translated into
internet data again. At home I have a virgin media
router which we have to connect to use the Wi-Fi.
