This document provides lesson objectives for understanding psychology. It introduces the concept of psychology, different approaches within psychology including cognitive psychology, and recognizing research methods like experiments. It describes performing an experiment on change blindness from cognitive psychology where students time how long it takes to notice differences between images. The document discusses how change blindness experiments provide evidence that people process little of what they see and how this phenomenon has practical implications for eyewitness testimony, distractions, and situations requiring attention like driving or air traffic control.
2. Lesson Objectives
To understand the basic concept of what is Psychology
To understand there are different approaches within psychology
Recognise one research method in psychology
Understand and relate the topic you have investigated in other
settings in the wider context of applied psychology
12. We are now going to perform another experiment which is from the
field of Cognitive Psychology
Please get a paper and a pen
Write down the time in seconds that it takes you to notice any and
or all the differences in the images.
Good luck

17. Change Blindness………
• Cognitive Psychologists theorised that the human
brain processes very little of what it sees.
• So they set out ways to collect empirical evidence to
test the theory.
• We have just done few of the experiments which
were devised.
What does the experiment show us????
18. Why does this matter ?
Discuss for few minutes in your groups
where the phenomenon of change blindness would
have practical implications
19. Eye Witness testimonies
Distractions while driving
Military command
airline controllers
20. To understand the basic concept of what is Psychology
To understand there are different approaches within
psychology
Recognise one research method in psychology
Understand and relate the topic you have investigated of
change blindness in other settings thus becoming applied
psychology
Editor's Notes
Psychologists work to understand and improve the functioning of human beings at home, at school, at work, at play, and in society in general,
So shall we all do one to? Ok you need to follow the instructions on the screen
No matter how hard we stare at this photograph, most of us are unable to figure out anything odd about it. Look more closely. The engine of the airplane disappears and reappears from under the wing!!
Most people observing such photographs cannot believe that they have missed such a large change in the scene.
This experiment uncovers aspects of the brains attention system known s change blindness. Change blindness is the ide that we miss large changes from our visual world from one view to another. Our brains re not able to see large changes which would apper to be perfectly obvious.
