The Coral Reefs Of St. John At The Virgin Island Essay
The ocean is an ever present mystery due to the fact that we have over 70% of it undiscovered. It never ceases to amaze humanity with its unique
creatures and habitats. One ocean environment I was fortunate to visit was the coral reefs near St. John at the Virgin Island Environmental Research
Center. I learned interesting things about this unique living system and how they support many organisms, but one thing left me very bothered. On a
tour of the coral reefs near a beach on St. John, I observed many pale detached corals. Not only that, but I saw the picture of these coral reefs from
years before and the differences were enormous. In the old picture, the coral reefs were vibrant and many. It seems like now, the coral that was once
ravishing and was in abundance are depleting and they are not as vibrant as they were before. I spoke to one of the researchers and they told me that
there are only 15% coral reefs left today because of several factors which include pollution, climate change, and unsavory fishing practices that ravaged
this once beautiful ecosystem. If these reefs are not protected in time it could be detrimental to the existence of many marine organisms.
Coral reefs are created from very small organisms called polyps that attach to any hard surface they land on. Once they are settled, they take carbon
dioxide from the ocean waters and secrete a limestone substance out to create a protective skeleton like layer. After sediment and limestone have
accumulated, the

Aldabra Rhetorical Analysis
The Atoll This essay is about the Atoll. Filled with fish, the strongest trees in the world, and even crabs that can crack coconuts. One person, Thomas
P. Peschak, got to go to Aldabra, a remote island of the East Coast of Africa. I have personally always wanted to see animals on a faraway island. In
this paragraph, you will learn about the breath–taking geographic features of Aldabra. Thomas said about the island, "Although Aldabra is in the
tropics, it is far from a lush tropical paradise". The geographic features are amazing and it's very likely that whoever reads this paragraph will like it.
Here are some geographic features. The climate is tropical but not lush. Tropical means it is hot and muggy and lush means it is healthy and full ... Show

The plants range from dangerous to harmless, from boring to interesting. The plants are very interesting to many people. Here are some of the
plants, their information, and what they do. The corals turn into exterior skeletons and over thousands of years, exterior skeletons form thick, ring
shaped coral reefs. Also, they colonize the water around the volcanoes. The mangrove forests are home to many animals like heron egrets, and
frigate birds. The mangrove trees are one of the toughest trees in the world. The reef is home to lots of animals, and the animals are sea fans, sea
worms, and sea sponges. Tawny sharks also hide in the coral caves during the day. The plants make the island lush. From corals to trees to reefs. The
mangrove trees are very large, and are home to many animals. The plants make the island very beautiful and colorful. If these plants didn't exist, then
Aldabra would be dull, and not colorful. So today, you have learned about the amazing geographic features, the talented animals, and the beautiful
plants. From the warm muggy tropics, to the strong, huge crabs and tortoises, to the toughest trees in the world. The island of Aldabra is one of many
amazing islands, but in my opinion, is the most interesting of them

Evil In Lord Of The Flies
Golding once said, "...the shape of a society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently
logical or respectable." Golding's Lord of The Flies, is a thought–provoking novel with a dark theme. The theme being that, evil rests in the person
rather than society as a whole; individuals can fight their own evil but, "man is so thoroughly corrupted that his redemption as a species is hopeless,
however gallant and inspirational individual attempts may be" ("Lord of the Flies" 187). Golding reveals this theme through the use of English
schoolboys who have to govern themselves while they are stranded on an island. Many of the boys turn to extreme cruelty and violence, while three
boys, Ralph,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Raised in the sheltered environment of a private English school, Golding was unprepared for the violence unleashed by the war" ("Lord of the
Flies" 175). Before the war, Golding attended Oxford College and became a schoolmaster. He went on to marry Ann Brook–field in 1939. He would
soon join the Royal British Navy to fulfill a patriotic duty for his country. Golding witnessed horrific violence during his service; he took part in
D–Day landings and witnessed the sinking of the German Navy ship, Bismarck. "He later described his experience in the war as, 'one had one's
nose rubbed in the human condition'" ("Lord of the Flies" 175). After the war, Golding had seen and experienced so many horrific things while in
action, he believed that all people carried evil within them. Golding explains this belief, "We saw a hell of a lot in the war that can't be accounted
for except on the basis of original evil." There are many instances in Lord of the Flies where Golding inflicts this belief on the characters in the
book. For example, "'Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!' Said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the
other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. 'You knew didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why
it's no go? Why things are what they are?'" (Golding 134) The character, the Beast, is telling Simon, that the Beast is not real. The Beast and all of
its evil resides in him and the other boys. The cruelness Golding experienced in the war was the primary inspiration for Lord of the Flies. Patrick
Reilly explains, "Lord of the Flies was conceived in a very different moral landscape and Golding himself tells us that the horrors of the war were
crucial in producing this alteration.." (Reilly

In the beginning, Crusoe's isle is a prison, a hell from which he cannot escape. He thinks often of leaving the isle, escaping is solitude. He tries
many schemes and ideas to leave the island, one of which is the construction of a boat/canoe from a log. This idea fails him. Later Crusoe comes to
love the island, it becomes his home. He builds a small homestead that is house and in times of danger his castle. He builds a garden which he
cultivates and cares for. He makes a little England in the midst of a tropical landscape. As he is there for so long, 26 years, that he is galled at
leaving. He feels that is his island, that he is its king or appointed governor. He has weathered the storm of faith and savages, wild animals and
pirates and loves his home, which is what the island is to him. The boys in "the Coral Island" are the same, but a faster scale. They are on their
island for a few months, at the most three quarters of a year. They feel a sadness at leaving their isle much more as it was never a prison or a hell to
them. They liked their isle from the start, the loved the adventure. With the deaths of their crew neatly sweeped under the carpet they can enjoy the
adventure of the isle. They also do not have a large sense of religious or divine interference in their stay on the isle. They are free to enjoy themselves

Essay on Rainforests of the Ocean
Rainforests of the Ocean
Coral reefs are large societies of small living organisms. They are made up of millions of various creatures including fish, starfish, sea urchins, and so
much more. Despite the fact that coral reefs make up fewer than one percentage of the Earth's surface, coral reefs are still one of the greatest
diversified ecosystems in the world due to the creatures that live in and around the reefs. Coral reefs are located in shallow, warm waters in the tropics
around the Bahamas, in the Red Sea, and near the Hawaiian islands. The largest coral reefs are the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea Coral Reef, and the
New Caledonia Barrier Reef. ("The World's 10 Largest Coral Reefs")

The zooxanthellae gives some of it's the food it had produced from photosynthesis to the coral. Because coral can only grow where a light source is
abundant and frequent, the coral also offers a great source of sunlight for the zooxanthellae. ("Coral, Carbon Dioxide, and Calcification")
Polyps are able to reproduce by both asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. In asexual reproduction, the polyps are clones of each–other. In
other words, the resulting polyps or colonies are identical to the original. The two types of asexual reproduction are budding and fragmentation.
When a coral polyp reaches a large size, it divides, therefore generating an identical new coral polyp. Fragmentation, on the other hand is when a
portion of a colony cracks off and creates a different colony. Fragmentation can happen due to external factors, like a storm or fishing materials. In
addition, coral polyps can breed by sexual reproduction, either externally or internally, depending on the variety of the coral polyp. In external
fertilization, coral polyps let out large masses of eggs while other polyps release small parcels of sperm. Once all the eggs and sperm float upward,
the eggs are fertilized and free swimming larvae are produced. Within a few days or weeks, most larvae become coral polyps. While most polyps
reproduce sexually by this method, some will use internal fertilization. Polyps that have the eggs inside

Symbolism in Lord of the Flies
Symbolism in Lord of The Flies
William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a novel about a group of English school boys who are stranded on a tropical island after their plane has been
attacked and crashes during World War II. In the beginning, the boys like being on their own without adults. The boys separate into two groups, led
by Jack and Ralph. Jack is obsessed with hunting, and he and his group pay do not pay attention. Ralph is concerned about keeping a rescue fire lit so
they will have a chance to be rescued, but no one else seems too concerned about it. At least one ship passes by without noticing the boys on the island.

As time passes that wears off and they become uncontrollable like the fire. ( ) A finalsymbol of savagery is the fire used by Jack to kill Ralph and burn
down the whole island, making it sterile and uninhabitable ( ).
In Lord of the Flies the symbols of rational and irrational thinking show the boys decent to becoming uncivilized. Piggy's glasses are symbolic of
rational thinking. The boys use them to light the signal fires in hopes of being rescued (Frost). The breaking of Piggy's glasses is symbolic of
irrational thinking and breaking the last tie to humanity that the boys have. The building of shelters symbolizes rational thoughts and actions that are
part of a constructive society. The thought of hunting, playing and doing anything they want symbolizes irrational thinking. Jack uses Piggy's
glasses to start a fire to smoke Ralph out of hiding meanwhile, destroying the shelters and fruit trees symbolizing how irrational Jack is thinking.
The symbol of rational thinking, Ralph and the symbol of irrational thinking, Jack are at opposite ends of the spectrum when talking about
leadership. Ralph is not only a rational thinker, but a moral person, keeping fairness in his group. Ralph decides what is best for the group as a whole
showing his leadership skills. Jack gives the boys what Ralph is not able to: fun and games, the thrill of adventure, and the excitement of bloody rituals

The Biodiversity Of Fiji And Coral Reefs
Fiji is an Island Nation in the South Pacific Ocean at one corner of the Coral Triangle, which is home to the most marine biodiversity on Earth. Fiji's
spectacular coral reefs are world–renowned for their vibrant colors. While many other coral reef sites globally have degraded, the reefs of Fiji seem to
remain vibrant and diverse, making them a high priority for marine conservation in the Pacific Ocean. Fiji is home to many wetland ecosystems on the
mainland that flows into the coastal mangrove wetlands and coral reefs. The land and sea ecosystems relationship are dependent on all the inhabitants of
the Fiji Islands conservation efforts. Some recent research contends that community and government partnerships have the potential to support a
healthy, sustainable environment, while reaping the benefits of protecting biodiversity of species in the Fiji wetlands with noted evidence in Fiji's
coral reefs. The biodiversity of Fiji's Mangroves and coral reefs are greatly affected by the decisions that Fijians decide. The importance of the already
highly valued mangrove wetland function invariably protects Fiji coral reefs health stimulates ongoing research. This research maintains that

When thinking about Hawaii, most people think about palm trees, hula girls, and big waves. Others think of flowers, luaus, and dramatic sunsets.
While each of these certainly embodies a part of Hawaiian culture, in reality, these items comprise a very small percentage of what makes up Hawaii.
The state of Hawaii is not like other states. It does not even have a singular geographic barrier. In fact, Hawaii is a series of 132 islands in the central
Pacific Ocean that stretch out for over 1,200 miles. Eight of the islands are large, with seven of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Island Made Thesis
How was the Island Made
By:Jonah Jacksteit
Thesis Statement This report will talk about how the marooned island got made.
An island 2000 km south of Hawai'i. The island is at 1В°52'23.40"N and 157В°19'6.69"W and spans 717 square kilometers of land. On this land
there were volcanoes but after some time they got eroded away. In this report I will prove that there was a volcano on the island and I will do so by
stating how the plants, climate, location and animals prove that there was a volcano.
Plants There are very few native plants on the island. The only plants that are on the island are breadfruit trees, pandanus trees, pawpaw trees,
coconut trees, babai(a type of taro root), mosses and mangrove trees. There are also yams lemons, and sugarcane as non tree plants. These seeds for
plants probably got transported to the island by birds except for the coconuts because there aren't any land borders to any other island. Because there
are no land boarders it gives us some evidence that the island got made by a volcano.

from the volcanoes. By having the volcanoes here before, it evaporated more water, which added pressure in the air, which then added

William Golding 's Lord Of The Flies
Most of the time, the smallest detail yields the biggest impact. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Golding's inclusion of minute details helps to
strongly communicate his theme of man's innate darkness. On the other hand, Peter Brook's film, Lord of the Flies, lacks some of the details required
to convey Golding's message properly. Because the novel includes the necessary details to convey the idea of mankind's inner darkness and violence,
the novel conveys Golding's theme more effectively than Peter Brook's film. The details that help support Golding's theme in the novel include vivid
imagery and setting, an appropriate characterization of Simon, and detailed symbols. First, the film's setting fails to create a strong feeling of... Show

In Brook's film, the boys merely reference the heat on the island and remove some of their clothing. Simply stating the heat's presence and how the
boys remove their clothes hardly creates a hot, suffocating feeling. Without the physical, overpowering feeling of heat, there is hardly a feeling of
tension between the boys. Therefore, the sole reference to the presence of heat deemphasizes the idea that man is a violent race. Therefore, the novel
conveys Golding's message more effectively because it exposes the tension and violence among the boys. Throughout literature, setting plays a vital
role in creating tone by providing the reader or the viewer some perspective with essential information about the overall location and tone of the piece.
In other words, setting is as important to a story as eyes are to humans. Eyes help humans determine location and help them navigate terrain. In terms of
the story, Golding's novel describes the island from the terrain and wildlife, to the physical feeling of the scalding sun and the warm ocean. Meanwhile,
Brook's film merely shows that the boys are stranded on an uninhabited island. Brook neglects to focus on the importance of the island terrain. Thus, the
film's setting resembles eyes that require glasses. The terrain of Brook's island is unclear. In addition to providing perspective, setting helps construct
the tone of the story. Continuing the metaphor, eyes can aid with navigation, but eyes alone cannot help an individual

William GoldingВґs Lord of the Flies and How Jack Changes...
'Lord of the Flies' was written by William Golding in 1954. Golding's experience in the war had an effect on him and changed his views on
humanity. His book was written to demonstrate just how naive the book 'The Coral Island' was. Golding conveys how mankind deteriorates when
one has no rules, order or morals. He shows no matter how young or what nationality one is, humans have an internal battle of right and wrong and
that without virtues and principles all can go down the path of savagery even innocent children. The third person narrative that Golding uses lets
the reader observe how the story develops. Jack is initially a responsible head strong boy who follows the rules that society had given him. Our
first impression of the choir is that of an army. They were 'marching' approximately in step. The use of word 'marching' suggests a uniform military
movement. Therefore the first sighting of the choir leaves a lasting impression of anonymity on the reader. This is conveyed when they are
described as a 'creature'. Ralph's group cannot see the choir so they are unknown and mysterious. Furthermore Jack is presented as an arrogant yet
an authoritative character. In the sentence 'I ought to be chief because I'm chapter chorister and head boy,' Golding emphasises Jack's arrogance and
ignorance as Jack believes that he is suitable for the role of chief due to his role in school which has no relevance. In addition, Jack is also spiteful and
cruel towards Piggy. This is conveyed

Simon Lord Of The Flies Analysis
A Failed Social Experiment on Coral Island
If a group of British school boys find themselves marooned on a tropical island, do they establish a peaceful society and adventure or do they revert to
man's violent and evil nature? The Coral Island by R. M. Ballantyne suggests the former; young English boys, upon landing on an Eden–esque island
would develop a civilization, spread Christianity, and explore. William Golding, a writer and officer of the British Royal Navy in World War II,
however, has a different perspective on this theoretical scenario and wrote Lord of the Flies to demonstrate this social experiment on humanity when
left to its own devices. Golding's characters in Lord of the Flies are allegories for humanity and civilization. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Simon frequently goes to his own sanctuary in the jungle for an introspective time, which resembles Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene, especially
as both the Lord of the Flies and Satan visit Simon and Jesus (respectively) soon before their untimely deaths. Simon's refuge in the jungle is "a
little cabin screened off from the open space by a few leaves" and from it he is able to observe the nature and the environment surrounding him (57).
The other boys characterize him as "funny" as his maturity and benevolence set him apart (55). When the littluns begin having nightmares and terrors
of the beast, Ralph calls an assembly and most of the boys attempt to put down these fears. When prompted, Simon says "Maybe...maybe there is a
beast," and clarified, "What I mean is...maybe it's only us" (89). Upon discovering that the beast on the mountain was actually a parachutist who had
fallen and gotten stuck on the rocks, Simon ran down to Jack's feast to bring awareness about the reality of the beast to the others. Due to his startling
appearance and the chaos of the boys' dance, Simon is mistaken for the beast and killed; this is reminiscent of Jesus's murder when trying to spread

The Nature of Humans in Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The nature of human: are humans born good or evil? These two opposing views on human nature are two topics that Rousseau and Golding have both
touched upon. While Golding believes that humans are born inherently evil, Rousseau believes the opposite: that humans are inherently good. Golding
wrote the novel Lord of the Flies as a response of the novel, The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne because he believed that it was far–fetched. In this
novel Ballantyne's main characters are able to enjoy their time on the deserted island. My opinion on this matter leans to Rousseau's side. I believe
that people are born naturally good. Jean Jacques Rousseau was born in Geneva in 1712 and died in 1778 in France. While Golding lived through the
two World Wars, Rousseau never lived through such conflict. A topic of Rousseau's that always came up is about how humans can keep their freedom
despite their dependence on one another. He believed that there were two things that had something to do with this topic and that was a human's
material and psychological need and that the latter was more important. Rousseau believed that humans get their sense of self due to opinion of others.
Rousseau believes that humans are inherently born good and that and that it is society's corruption that causes humans to be evil. William Golding
was born in 1911 in Cornwall, England and died in 1993. William Golding was born only three years before the start ofWorld War I. Golding lived

Human Overpopulation And Its Effects On Coral Reefs
Throughout the world, coral reefs have died off due to a chemical process known as bleaching. NOAA states in "What is coral bleaching?", bleaching
is the by–product of corals getting too warm; when corals get too warm they expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues, which causes them
to turn completely white. Today, the remainingcoral reefs are being stressed by the human inhabitants who exist upon the land masses from which
these reefs neighbor; which, in turn, has caused these remaining reefs to approach extinction. Moreover, coral reefs are underwater barrier islands, and

novel is how the Lord of the Flies came to exist. Then, somehow, people started to associate the philosophers John Locke and Thomas Hobbes with the
Lord of the Flies. The philosopher Thomas Hobbes believed that people are bad, and that God should pick whoever to become leader. While John
Locke believed that people were good, and that the leaders should be elected by the people. In the novel, the different philosophers were associated
with different characters. John Locke's views correlate best with the characters Piggy and Ralph, while Hobbes' views were represented by characters
Jack and Roger. When the boys first got to the island, they viewed Ralph as a leader and chose him to be chief because of his rational thoughts and
logic. Ralph's personality traits and decisions throughout the novel followed the philosophies of John Locke.
The philosopher that Ralph consistently represented in the novel was John Locke. When the boys first come to the island, Ralph tells the other
boys about Piggy's embarrassing nickname and it ends up becoming Piggy's name throughout the novel. Later he apologizes, and tells Piggy
"Better Piggy, than Fatty, he said at last with the directness of genuine leadership" (Golding 25). What Ralph did was more of a Hobbes oriented
behavior, but the fact that he apologized falls in line with Locke's idea that people are good. Locke also " believed that human nature allowed men
to be selfish" (Handout). Ralph was selfish because he didn't keep Piggy's secret and he used it to make him a laughingstock of the whole group.
After Jack and Ralph explored the island, Ralph calls an assembly. He initiated a rule that when someone wants to speak they have to be holding the
conch. This gives the boys each a turn to contribute to the meeting. John Locke would approve of this because he thought "human nature was
characterized by reason and tolerance " and Ralph is letting everyone have a voice whether he

Characteristics Of Mangroves Of Roatan And The Bay Island
ECOSYSTEMS CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING ZONES The area around Roatan and the Bay Islands is considered to be a Tropical Humid
Forest. This area of life is restricted to narrow lowlands and covers coastal plains. The flora that integrates the vegetation of the area has
characteristics and morphological features which include trees, shrubs, and grasses; as well as an evergreen, deciduous phenology. VEGETABLE
ECOSYSTEMS Mangroves estuaries, coastal lagoons, and Mangrove wetlands are found throughout Roatan and its surrounding islands. In Utila,
this type of ecosystem occupies 37% of the island's surface area. In Roatan, this type of ecosystem occupies 7.2% of the islands surface area. In
Guanaja figures for this type of ecosystem drop to 6%. Utila Island, which is home to a significant portion of mangrove swamps, has a large vegetal
landscape and a high level of biodiversity. This gives Utila a strong patrimonial value. THE CHACHALACA For example, this habitat represents a
limited shelter for the Chachalaca (a tree–dwelling bird of the guan family "Ortalis vetula deschauenseei) of Utila Island. This bird subspecies is
endemic to the mangroves of the island of Utila. The Chachalaca was believed to be extinct in years past but is now protected and growing. THE
GARROBO The garrobo (Ctenosaura similis) is another example, of a native species on the Island of Utila which dependent on the local ecosystem of
the mangroves and is considered Critically Endangered. MANGROVES IN

How Are Craters Formed
How are craters formed?
There are two types of craters, simple and complex. Craters are formed when a projectile comes at a fast speed and has a large mass. After hitting
the ground the objects impact immediately creates a shock wave. Wave release and material flow will usually make the crater bigger. Rarefaction
(wave release) sends impact in the air around the surface of where the projectile landed. The heat from the projectile will make the hole seep even
deeper depending on where it feel. If the object feels from outer space then it's most likely going to carry heat.
What is the largest crater on earth?
Previously there was a crater that landed in South Africa, with a diameter of 380 kilometers (236 miles.)

During the breakup of Pangaea there were even smaller fragments that broke, apart and formed islands. Greenland and Madagascar are these types
of continental islands. Out of all the major fragments that were broken off, there are six islands we know most of Continental, tidal, barrier, oceanic,
coral, and artificial. Other islands are formed from a decrease or drop in sea level. Continental islands may form through the weathering and erosion
of a link of land that once connected an island to the mainland. "Tidal islands are a type of Continental Island where land connecting the island to the
mainland has not completely eroded, but is underwater at high tide. Barrier islands are narrow and lie parallel to coastlines. Some are a part of the
continental shelf (continental islands) and made of sediment–sand, silt, and gravel. Barrier islands can also be coral islands, made from billions of tiny
coral exoskeletons. Oceanic islands, also known as volcanic islands, are formed by eruptions of volcanoes on the ocean floor. Coral islands are low
islands formed in warm waters by tiny sea animals called corals. Corals build up hard external skeletons of calcium carbonate. Artificial islands are
made by people. Artificial islands are created in different ways for different purposes". I got this information off of

Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Park
Problematic Hope in Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Park
Many people around the world take delight traveling to a paradise full of beautiful, relaxing and enjoyable scenery ("Virgin Islands"). Virgin Islands
Coral Reef National Park is a site full of these blissful attributes. ("Virgin Islands") Not to mention, the reef is filled with remarkable diversity among
marine species and corals.("Virgin Islands") Although the reef is full of aesthetic components, this underwater city, among many others, is slowly
disappearing.("Virgin Islands") "There are not as many reef fish as there used to be; there's more algae, more coral diseases, and more reefs that ... are
now simply gone," says Ginger Garrison, a marine ecologist with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Virgin Islands National Park is a
protected area on St. John's island that is facing many problems beneath the waters.
Beneath its facade, the reef is sick. Around the 1980's, it was suspected at least three diseases had swept through the waters. More than 60 types of
microbes from the dust have been found. This includes fungus known to cause disease among Caribbean sea fans. It still eludes us where the source of
the diseases are, but researchers have suspicions it's from African dust. It travels through the Atlantic trade winds in the summer. The dust carries

Bleaching occurs when the corals are exposed to warming waters. The heat causes the corals to release their internal photosynthetic algae. This algae is
normally used by reef–building creatures as food, but once released, it's gone and causing many of these reef–building creatures to die. One article
suggests,"Bleaching events often result in the exodus of sixty to ninety percent of a coral's zoolanthellae mass. By 2030, more than 90 percent of the
world's coral reefs will be endangered by bleaching." The beauty of the reef is slowly being destroyed by this climate change

Human Nature In Lord Of The Flies
Human nature is very convoluted and complex, but if society was to stop and think about our imperfections as humans, is cruelty learned or innate?
The novel, Lord of the Flies, takes place during one of the most terrible times in history, World War II (1939
–1945). William Golding, a British
novelist, playwright, and poet, wrote Lord of the Flies, and also won the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding work in literature. Golding was also
awarded the Booker Prize for fiction in 1980 for his novel, Rites of Passage. Golding served in the Royal Navy during World War II, and his
experiences during the war shaped his views on the evil that society posses, and inspired him to write Lord of the Flies, as did his favorite novel Coral
Island, written by R. M. Ballantyne. Throughout the novel, cruelty is learned through Jack and Maurice when Jack was hesitant in trying to kill the pig
in the beginning of the book and when Maurice felt hesitant to kick over the littluns sand castles, but later helped in the killing of Simon.
Jack shows that cruelty is learned and not innate because throughout the novel, he progressively becomes more cruel. In the beginning, Jack was
confident in himself for he was the head chorister and leader of his choir (Golding 22). When he along with Ralph and Simon stumbled upon a pig
late in the first chapter, he hesitated to kill it. The book reads: "They knew very well why he hadn't: because of the enormity of the knife descending
and cutting into living

many patches of reef make up this complex.
Australia has set aside about one–third of the reef complex as a marine protected area in which all extractive activities are banned. Overfishing and
other destructive practices have been halted, but other problems still threaten the reef. Warm water has been causing bleaching (For reasons we don't
fully understand, when they're stressed by warm water or other factors, the corals expel their algae symbionts. If the bleaching is too severe, the
corals die). In recent years, bleaching incidents have become increasingly widespread and severe. In 2002, between 65 and 90 percent of the corals
within the 284,000 km2 of the Great Barrier Reef showed signs of bleaching. Global warming can only make this situation worse. Another serious
concern is that the increased CO2 concentrations are making ocean water more acidic, which interferes with the coral's ability to create the calcium
carbonate exoskeletons that create the reef. Some marine biologists warn that if current trends continue, all the coral could be dead within the next 50
years.

Lord of the Flies starts off with these group of schoolboys lost and confused on an deserted island. The boys were on a plane on their way to a safe
spot because of the nuclear age but suddenly went down and landed on an island. With the plane going down the adults were in the front, and when
the plane split in two the front of the plane landed in the water. The boys looked around but the adults were nowhere to be found. Eventually with

Lord Of The Flies Film Analysis
Many students across the United States read the classic novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. The story traces a group of lost boys
who find themselves alone on an island after opposing forces shoot down their escape plane during a futuristic version of World War III. Because
of the novel's uncanny resemblance to other classics, like Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson or Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie, Lord of the
Flies quickly caught fire, eventually leading to two film adaptations. Tony and Emmy Award winning Peter Brook released the first film adaptation
1963. Brook's adaptation consists of a randomly selected group of British schoolboys with no real scripts on a tiny island off the coast of Puerto
Rico. Brook takes advantage of the dialogue, visuals, and character foils in order to effectively portray the theme: darkness in man's heart. While
Brook had a small amount of funding and the boys simply improvised most of the lines, the 1963 film adaptation of Lord of the Flies portrays the
theme better than the original novel. Being able to hear the dialogue between the boys on the island already gives the film an advantage. In the
movie, Ralph's kind actions and his sincere tone when he talks to Piggy is much more obvious than in the same dialogue in the novel. For example,
in both the movie and the novel, Jack breaks Piggy's glasses. In the novel, the narrator observes that "Unwillingly Ralph felt his lip twitch; he was
angry with himself for giving way"

Coral Island Vs Lord Of The Flies
Reality of Human Nature In Lord of the Flies, William Golding shows a world of increasing violence through the behavior of the characters, the
setting of the novel, and the events occurring throughout the story. Golding's Lord of the Flies was inspired by R.M. Ballantyne's Coral Island. Both
works involve boys stranded on a deserted island. Ballantyne's Coral Island portrays these young boys as content, rational young boys, which is
somewhat unrealistic. Golding wanted to create a more lifelike version of events that might occur if several young boys were stranded on a deserted
island. Golding creates vivid scenes explaining the savage nature of humans, and just how animalistic they can become. Increasingly violent behavior is
displayed through four main characters, Jack, Ralph, Simon,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

torturous murderer. At the start of the novel, Simon and Ralph are both very shy and civil little boys. Throughout the story, the boys struggle to

Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis
All through the novel of Lord of The Flies, Ralph strongly shows "hope" and "goodness". Since the beginning, when they first arrived on the
island, Ralph had always been one of the few people to keep his head high about the situation they all happened to be in. He constantly had hope
that they were going to be rescued and had a trait of goodness shown in him which made everyone vote for him to be chief. Ever since the first day
Ralph and others were stuck on the island, Ralph kept himself calm and hope that his father would come and save each and every one of them.
"When he gets leave he'll come and rescue us!" (Golding 13). Even though there was a insignificant chance that no one would find them, Ralph
held his grounds with the hope he had of his father rescuing, it would be someone else. He then came up with the idea of making a fire. "If a ship
comes near the island they may not notice us. We must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make fire" (Golding 38). By creating that
fire, the smoke coming from it would be a signal to show somebody was on the island and if ships eventually pass by, their chance of getting
rescued would be prominent. The conch that was found by Piggy, in chapter one, also represents Ralph. The conch is what supplies him with power
of becoming the leader of the group, and give out orders. " Him with the shell...let him be chief... " (Golding 22). Since Ralph was the one to blow the
conch and assemble everyone on the island, all believed he

What Is Darwin's Theory Of Coral Reefs
Darwin's theory can be proved using recent technologies, since proving it manually would take a long time, as this process needs hundreds of
thousands of years. A computer can be used to recreate a model of an island. We can then observe the effect of water depth, erosion and sunlight on the
island and the coral growth over time. As the island sinks we can calculate how the coral reef develops as sea level varies over time, and compare it to
real life observations. If the calculated model reefs are similar to the real world reefs then Darwin's hypothesis is valid. Moreover, if they are not the
same then the hypothesis is falsifiable. This is due to the fact that the calculated data has been modelled and tested over the passage of thousand of
years, under the same circumstances. Therefore, if the calculated models is different than real world reefs then the Darwin's hypothesis was not the
cause of them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He suggested that this is going to happen to all of the world's volcanic islands. As tectonic plates move, volcano rocks cool down as they are carried
away from a volcanic hot spot, this causes the island to sink as much as few millimeters a year. A possible flow in Darwin's hypothesis, as some
researchers from MIT recently found, is this theory can't explain the trajectories of other volcanic ocean island systems around the world, such as the
Hawaiian islands. These islands show a different progression. The researchers found a fringing reef where they expected to find no reef development
at all. Moreover they found drowned barrier reefs where they expected living barrier reefs. The Hawaiian islands were not sinking into atolls like the

The Coral Island Vs Lord Of The Flies
In a perfect world there is no war, no conflict, simply peace surrounding the human race, but humans don't live in a perfect world. There is war,
bloodshed, and acts of crime that no person should every have to go through. World War II is regarded as one of the worst things that could have
ever happened on Earth. World War II is used enormously in literature especially in literature explaining the awful effects of war. Some examples
of these pieces of literature are "The Lord of the Flies" and "The Coral Island". "The Lord of the Flies" is one of most regarded tells of societies

harsh and brutal, it also left me feeling futile, but look I stand here, I have faced it. Nevertheless, I never expected it to be a journey that was

A straight road will lead you to dull journeys but if it is a rough road you will feel the bumps, but in the end, it will lead you to greatness. So, my

to not speak English, as my school being an English Medium School, where if you spoke in the native language, you would pay a fine of 10

Reef was first formed approximately 500,000 years ago, with the current reef state being formed about 6,000 to 8,000 years old.
Coral reefs exist all over the world and are generally known as being one of the most diverse, intricate and beautiful of all existing marine habitats.
They have many varying structures which are developed by algae and are symbiotic with various reef building corals which are referred to as,

Lord of the Flies, Coral Island and the Role of Adults -...
It is known that to fully appreciate the novel "Lord of the Flies" (1954) by William Golding (1911–1993) it is necessary to have read Robert Michael
Ballantyne's (1825–1894) "Coral Island" (1858), or at least to understand its theme and treatment. And so, since it was Golding's intention to set himself
to write an island story that deliberately challenged Ballantyne's model in "Coral Island" –by inverting its assumptions and values– we can explore
multiple angles from which the two novels can be compared and studied. An item which seems quite interesting when analysing both texts is that one
related to civilization and its adult exponents. After a thorough reading and focusing on very clear and specific elements we happen to notice the... Show

Or, How can an ambassador of an atomic war stand for the parental protection or even a mature model to be followed? The naval officer's ignorance,
his lack of understanding of what has been going on, is ironical.4 Furthermore, what Golding is trying to make clear at this instance is the decadent
figure of the human adult, and by extension, of the whole human civilized world.
Let us now turn to R.M. Ballantyne's "Coral Island". Here, the concern about civilization, seems to be very well defined as well as good and evil
are so clearly separated that there cannot be any conflict between them.5 In spite of this, when we come to a closer look we find a special complexity
within a number of characters. Everything about Ballantyne's boys, who are older by some years than Golding's boys, is confident and positive. The
novel as a whole, pictures the assumptions and values of the Victorian period in affirming progress, imperialism, self–reliance, the Creator, the
goodness of nature and of human nature– when Christianised at least 6 Actually, this is quite an interesting item to focus on. On the one hand there are

The Green Island is situated approximately 27km offshore Cairns Queensland. It stands to be 12 hectares in size being only the coral cay with a
rainforest. The island ranges from tropical to wet season within the months of January to March bringing an average annual rainfall of about 2m. It is
formed by the wave action pushing rubble debris onto leeward side (calm side) of a reef flat and with perfect conditions these debris and rubbles grow
into a small island.
Tourism rationales for development on Green Island can benefit in employment opportunities, socio–economic development of areas which would help
foster economic activities around the island. Environmental best practice refers to the applications used in the most appropriate and beneficial way in
the combination of environmental control measures and strategies. Green Island follows the regulations in relation to environmental best practice
however the need for such applications to be developed is increasing as carbon emissions in the world are increasing which is why the objective of
not leaving behind a carbon footprint needs to be achieved by Green Island.
The small Danish island of Samsoe is another project similar to Green Island where CO2 neutrality is the goal to be achieved, however, at the
moment car emissions are not as effective in terms of best practices therefore in order to counter such a pollution problem electric cars have been
recommended.

The Coral Reefs Of St. John At The Virgin Island Essay

  • 1. The Coral Reefs Of St. John At The Virgin Island Essay The ocean is an ever present mystery due to the fact that we have over 70% of it undiscovered. It never ceases to amaze humanity with its unique creatures and habitats. One ocean environment I was fortunate to visit was the coral reefs near St. John at the Virgin Island Environmental Research Center. I learned interesting things about this unique living system and how they support many organisms, but one thing left me very bothered. On a tour of the coral reefs near a beach on St. John, I observed many pale detached corals. Not only that, but I saw the picture of these coral reefs from years before and the differences were enormous. In the old picture, the coral reefs were vibrant and many. It seems like now, the coral that was once ravishing and was in abundance are depleting and they are not as vibrant as they were before. I spoke to one of the researchers and they told me that there are only 15% coral reefs left today because of several factors which include pollution, climate change, and unsavory fishing practices that ravaged this once beautiful ecosystem. If these reefs are not protected in time it could be detrimental to the existence of many marine organisms. Coral reefs are created from very small organisms called polyps that attach to any hard surface they land on. Once they are settled, they take carbon dioxide from the ocean waters and secrete a limestone substance out to create a protective skeleton like layer. After sediment and limestone have accumulated, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Aldabra Rhetorical Analysis The Atoll This essay is about the Atoll. Filled with fish, the strongest trees in the world, and even crabs that can crack coconuts. One person, Thomas P. Peschak, got to go to Aldabra, a remote island of the East Coast of Africa. I have personally always wanted to see animals on a faraway island. In this paragraph, you will learn about the breath–taking geographic features of Aldabra. Thomas said about the island, "Although Aldabra is in the tropics, it is far from a lush tropical paradise". The geographic features are amazing and it's very likely that whoever reads this paragraph will like it. Here are some geographic features. The climate is tropical but not lush. Tropical means it is hot and muggy and lush means it is healthy and full ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The plants range from dangerous to harmless, from boring to interesting. The plants are very interesting to many people. Here are some of the plants, their information, and what they do. The corals turn into exterior skeletons and over thousands of years, exterior skeletons form thick, ring shaped coral reefs. Also, they colonize the water around the volcanoes. The mangrove forests are home to many animals like heron egrets, and frigate birds. The mangrove trees are one of the toughest trees in the world. The reef is home to lots of animals, and the animals are sea fans, sea worms, and sea sponges. Tawny sharks also hide in the coral caves during the day. The plants make the island lush. From corals to trees to reefs. The mangrove trees are very large, and are home to many animals. The plants make the island very beautiful and colorful. If these plants didn't exist, then Aldabra would be dull, and not colorful. So today, you have learned about the amazing geographic features, the talented animals, and the beautiful plants. From the warm muggy tropics, to the strong, huge crabs and tortoises, to the toughest trees in the world. The island of Aldabra is one of many amazing islands, but in my opinion, is the most interesting of them ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Evil In Lord Of The Flies Golding once said, "...the shape of a society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently logical or respectable." Golding's Lord of The Flies, is a thought–provoking novel with a dark theme. The theme being that, evil rests in the person rather than society as a whole; individuals can fight their own evil but, "man is so thoroughly corrupted that his redemption as a species is hopeless, however gallant and inspirational individual attempts may be" ("Lord of the Flies" 187). Golding reveals this theme through the use of English schoolboys who have to govern themselves while they are stranded on an island. Many of the boys turn to extreme cruelty and violence, while three boys, Ralph,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Raised in the sheltered environment of a private English school, Golding was unprepared for the violence unleashed by the war" ("Lord of the Flies" 175). Before the war, Golding attended Oxford College and became a schoolmaster. He went on to marry Ann Brook–field in 1939. He would soon join the Royal British Navy to fulfill a patriotic duty for his country. Golding witnessed horrific violence during his service; he took part in D–Day landings and witnessed the sinking of the German Navy ship, Bismarck. "He later described his experience in the war as, 'one had one's nose rubbed in the human condition'" ("Lord of the Flies" 175). After the war, Golding had seen and experienced so many horrific things while in action, he believed that all people carried evil within them. Golding explains this belief, "We saw a hell of a lot in the war that can't be accounted for except on the basis of original evil." There are many instances in Lord of the Flies where Golding inflicts this belief on the characters in the book. For example, "'Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!' Said the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated places echoed with the parody of laughter. 'You knew didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are what they are?'" (Golding 134) The character, the Beast, is telling Simon, that the Beast is not real. The Beast and all of its evil resides in him and the other boys. The cruelness Golding experienced in the war was the primary inspiration for Lord of the Flies. Patrick Reilly explains, "Lord of the Flies was conceived in a very different moral landscape and Golding himself tells us that the horrors of the war were crucial in producing this alteration.." In the beginning, Crusoe's isle is a prison, a hell from which he cannot escape. He thinks often of leaving the isle, escaping is solitude. He tries many schemes and ideas to leave the island, one of which is the construction of a boat/canoe from a log. This idea fails him. Later Crusoe comes to love the island, it becomes his home. He builds a small homestead that is house and in times of danger his castle. He builds a garden which he cultivates and cares for. He makes a little England in the midst of a tropical landscape. As he is there for so long, 26 years, that he is galled at leaving. He feels that is his island, that he is its king or appointed governor. He has weathered the storm of faith and savages, wild animals and pirates and loves his home, which is what the island is to him. The boys in "the Coral Island" are the same, but a faster scale. They are on their island for a few months, at the most three quarters of a year. They feel a sadness at leaving their isle much more as it was never a prison or a hell to them. They liked their isle from the start, the loved the adventure. With the deaths of their crew neatly sweeped under the carpet they can enjoy the adventure of the isle. They are made up of millions of various creatures including fish, starfish, sea urchins, and so much more. Despite the fact that coral reefs make up fewer than one percentage of the Earth's surface, coral reefs are still one of the greatest diversified ecosystems in the world due to the creatures that live in and around the reefs. Coral reefs are located in shallow, warm waters in the tropics around the Bahamas, in the Red Sea, and near the Hawaiian islands. The zooxanthellae gives some of it's the food it had produced from photosynthesis to the coral. Because coral can only grow where a light source is abundant and frequent, the coral also offers a great source of sunlight for the zooxanthellae. ("Coral, Carbon Dioxide, and Calcification") Polyps are able to reproduce by both asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. In asexual reproduction, the polyps are clones of each–other. In other words, the resulting polyps or colonies are identical to the original. The two types of asexual reproduction are budding and fragmentation. When a coral polyp reaches a large size, it divides, therefore generating an identical new coral polyp. Fragmentation, on the other hand is when a portion of a colony cracks off and creates a different colony. Fragmentation can happen due to external factors, like a storm or fishing materials. In addition, coral polyps can breed by sexual reproduction, either externally or internally, depending on the variety of the coral polyp. In external fertilization, coral polyps let out large masses of eggs while other polyps release small parcels of sperm. Once all the eggs and sperm float upward, the eggs are fertilized and free swimming larvae are produced. Within a few days or weeks, most larvae become coral polyps. While most polyps reproduce sexually by this method, some will use internal fertilization. Polyps that have the eggs inside ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The boys use them to light the signal fires in hopes of being rescued (Frost). The breaking of Piggy's glasses is symbolic of irrational thinking and breaking the last tie to humanity that the boys have. The building of shelters symbolizes rational thoughts and actions that are part of a constructive society. The thought of hunting, playing and doing anything they want symbolizes irrational thinking. Jack uses Piggy's glasses to start a fire to smoke Ralph out of hiding meanwhile, destroying the shelters and fruit trees symbolizing how irrational Jack is thinking. The symbol of rational thinking, Ralph and the symbol of irrational thinking, Jack are at opposite ends of the spectrum when talking about leadership. Ralph is not only a rational thinker, but a moral person, keeping fairness in his group. Ralph decides what is best for the group as a whole showing his leadership skills. The island is at 1В°52'23.40"N and 157В°19'6.69"W and spans 717 square kilometers of land. On this land there were volcanoes but after some time they got eroded away. In this report I will prove that there was a volcano on the island and I will do so by stating how the plants, climate, location and animals prove that there was a volcano. Plants There are very few native plants on the island. The only plants that are on the island are breadfruit trees, pandanus trees, pawpaw trees, coconut trees, babai(a type of taro root), mosses and mangrove trees. There are also yams lemons, and sugarcane as non tree plants. These seeds for plants probably got transported to the island by birds except for the coconuts because there aren't any land borders to any other island. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Golding's inclusion of minute details helps to strongly communicate his theme of man's innate darkness. On the other hand, Peter Brook's film, Lord of the Flies, lacks some of the details required to convey Golding's message properly. Because the novel includes the necessary details to convey the idea of mankind's inner darkness and violence, the novel conveys Golding's theme more effectively than Peter Brook's film. The details that help support Golding's theme in the novel include vivid imagery and setting, an appropriate characterization of Simon, and detailed symbols. First, the film's setting fails to create a strong feeling of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Brook's film, the boys merely reference the heat on the island and remove some of their clothing. Simply stating the heat's presence and how the boys remove their clothes hardly creates a hot, suffocating feeling. Without the physical, overpowering feeling of heat, there is hardly a feeling of tension between the boys. Therefore, the sole reference to the presence of heat deemphasizes the idea that man is a violent race. Therefore, the novel conveys Golding's message more effectively because it exposes the tension and violence among the boys. Throughout literature, setting plays a vital role in creating tone by providing the reader or the viewer some perspective with essential information about the overall location and tone of the piece. In other words, setting is as important to a story as eyes are to humans. Eyes help humans determine location and help them navigate terrain. In terms of the story, Golding's novel describes the island from the terrain and wildlife, to the physical feeling of the scalding sun and the warm ocean. Meanwhile, Brook's film merely shows that the boys are stranded on an uninhabited island. Brook neglects to focus on the importance of the island terrain. Thus, the film's setting resembles eyes that require glasses. The terrain of Brook's island is unclear. In addition to providing perspective, setting helps construct the tone of the story. Continuing the metaphor, eyes can aid with navigation, but eyes alone cannot help an individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. William GoldingВґs Lord of the Flies and How Jack Changes... 'Lord of the Flies' was written by William Golding in 1954. Golding's experience in the war had an effect on him and changed his views on humanity. His book was written to demonstrate just how naive the book 'The Coral Island' was. Golding conveys how mankind deteriorates when one has no rules, order or morals. He shows no matter how young or what nationality one is, humans have an internal battle of right and wrong and that without virtues and principles all can go down the path of savagery even innocent children. The third person narrative that Golding uses lets the reader observe how the story develops. Jack is initially a responsible head strong boy who follows the rules that society had given him. Our first impression of the choir is that of an army. They were 'marching' approximately in step. The use of word 'marching' suggests a uniform military movement. Therefore the first sighting of the choir leaves a lasting impression of anonymity on the reader. This is conveyed when they are described as a 'creature'. Ralph's group cannot see the choir so they are unknown and mysterious. Furthermore Jack is presented as an arrogant yet an authoritative character. In the sentence 'I ought to be chief because I'm chapter chorister and head boy,' Golding emphasises Jack's arrogance and ignorance as Jack believes that he is suitable for the role of chief due to his role in school which has no relevance. In addition, Jack is also spiteful and cruel towards Piggy. This is conveyed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Simon Lord Of The Flies Analysis A Failed Social Experiment on Coral Island If a group of British school boys find themselves marooned on a tropical island, do they establish a peaceful society and adventure or do they revert to man's violent and evil nature? The Coral Island by R. M. Ballantyne suggests the former; young English boys, upon landing on an Eden–esque island would develop a civilization, spread Christianity, and explore. William Golding, a writer and officer of the British Royal Navy in World War II, however, has a different perspective on this theoretical scenario and wrote Lord of the Flies to demonstrate this social experiment on humanity when left to its own devices. These two opposing views on human nature are two topics that Rousseau and Golding have both touched upon. While Golding believes that humans are born inherently evil, Rousseau believes the opposite: that humans are inherently good. Golding wrote the novel Lord of the Flies as a response of the novel, The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne because he believed that it was far–fetched. In this novel Ballantyne's main characters are able to enjoy their time on the deserted island. My opinion on this matter leans to Rousseau's side. I believe that people are born naturally good. Jean Jacques Rousseau was born in Geneva in 1712 and died in 1778 in France. While Golding lived through the two World Wars, Rousseau never lived through such conflict. A topic of Rousseau's that always came up is about how humans can keep their freedom despite their dependence on one another. He believed that there were two things that had something to do with this topic and that was a human's material and psychological need and that the latter was more important. Rousseau believed that humans get their sense of self due to opinion of others. Rousseau believes that humans are inherently born good and that and that it is society's corruption that causes humans to be evil. • 19. Lord Of The Flies Reflection The novel Lord of the Flies was written in response to Coral Island, a novel written by R. M. Ballantyne. William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies, disagreed with Coral Island and he believed that children stranded on an island together would not do well. Thus, his disagreement with the novel is how the Lord of the Flies came to exist. Then, somehow, people started to associate the philosophers John Locke and Thomas Hobbes with the Lord of the Flies. The philosopher Thomas Hobbes believed that people are bad, and that God should pick whoever to become leader. While John Locke believed that people were good, and that the leaders should be elected by the people. In the novel, the different philosophers were associated with different characters. John Locke's views correlate best with the characters Piggy and Ralph, while Hobbes' views were represented by characters Jack and Roger. When the boys first got to the island, they viewed Ralph as a leader and chose him to be chief because of his rational thoughts and logic. Ralph's personality traits and decisions throughout the novel followed the philosophies of John Locke. The philosopher that Ralph consistently represented in the novel was John Locke. When the boys first come to the island, Ralph tells the other boys about Piggy's embarrassing nickname and it ends up becoming Piggy's name throughout the novel. Later he apologizes, and tells Piggy "Better Piggy, than Fatty, he said at last with the directness of genuine leadership" (Golding 25). What Ralph did was more of a Hobbes oriented behavior, but the fact that he apologized falls in line with Locke's idea that people are good. Locke also " believed that human nature allowed men to be selfish" (Handout). Ralph was selfish because he didn't keep Piggy's secret and he used it to make him a laughingstock of the whole group. After Jack and Ralph explored the island, Ralph calls an assembly. He initiated a rule that when someone wants to speak they have to be holding the conch. This gives the boys each a turn to contribute to the meeting. John Locke would approve of this because he thought "human nature was characterized by reason and tolerance " and Ralph is letting everyone have a voice whether he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rarefaction (wave release) sends impact in the air around the surface of where the projectile landed. The heat from the projectile will make the hole seep even deeper depending on where it feel. The novel, Lord of the Flies, takes place during one of the most terrible times in history, World War II (1939 –1945). William Golding, a British novelist, playwright, and poet, wrote Lord of the Flies, and also won the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding work in literature. Golding was also awarded the Booker Prize for fiction in 1980 for his novel, Rites of Passage. Golding served in the Royal Navy during World War II, and his experiences during the war shaped his views on the evil that society posses, and inspired him to write Lord of the Flies, as did his favorite novel Coral Island, written by R. M. Ballantyne. Throughout the novel, cruelty is learned through Jack and Maurice when Jack was hesitant in trying to kill the pig in the beginning of the book and when Maurice felt hesitant to kick over the littluns sand castles, but later helped in the killing of Simon. Jack shows that cruelty is learned and not innate because throughout the novel, he progressively becomes more cruel. In the beginning, Jack was confident in himself for he was the head chorister and leader of his choir (Golding 22). In 2002, between 65 and 90 percent of the corals within the 284,000 km2 of the Great Barrier Reef showed signs of bleaching. Global warming can only make this situation worse. Another serious concern is that the increased CO2 concentrations are making ocean water more acidic, which interferes with the coral's ability to create the calcium carbonate exoskeletons that create the reef. • 28. Lord Of The Flies Film Analysis Many students across the United States read the classic novel Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. The story traces a group of lost boys who find themselves alone on an island after opposing forces shoot down their escape plane during a futuristic version of World War III. Because of the novel's uncanny resemblance to other classics, like Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson or Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie, Lord of the Flies quickly caught fire, eventually leading to two film adaptations. Tony and Emmy Award winning Peter Brook released the first film adaptation 1963. Brook's adaptation consists of a randomly selected group of British schoolboys with no real scripts on a tiny island off the coast of Puerto Rico. Brook takes advantage of the dialogue, visuals, and character foils in order to effectively portray the theme: darkness in man's heart. While Brook had a small amount of funding and the boys simply improvised most of the lines, the 1963 film adaptation of Lord of the Flies portrays the theme better than the original novel. Being able to hear the dialogue between the boys on the island already gives the film an advantage. In the movie, Ralph's kind actions and his sincere tone when he talks to Piggy is much more obvious than in the same dialogue in the novel. For example, in both the movie and the novel, Jack breaks Piggy's glasses. Since the beginning, when they first arrived on the island, Ralph had always been one of the few people to keep his head high about the situation they all happened to be in. He constantly had hope that they were going to be rescued and had a trait of goodness shown in him which made everyone vote for him to be chief. Ever since the first day Ralph and others were stuck on the island, Ralph kept himself calm and hope that his father would come and save each and every one of them. "When he gets leave he'll come and rescue us!" (Golding 13). Even though there was a insignificant chance that no one would find them, Ralph held his grounds with the hope he had of his father rescuing, it would be someone else. He then came up with the idea of making a fire. "If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. We must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make fire" (Golding 38). By creating that fire, the smoke coming from it would be a signal to show somebody was on the island and if ships eventually pass by, their chance of getting rescued would be prominent. The conch that was found by Piggy, in chapter one, also represents Ralph. The conch is what supplies him with power of becoming the leader of the group, and give out orders. " Him with the shell...let him be chief... " (Golding 22). Since Ralph was the one to blow the conch and assemble everyone on the island, all believed he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. What Is Darwin's Theory Of Coral Reefs Darwin's theory can be proved using recent technologies, since proving it manually would take a long time, as this process needs hundreds of thousands of years. A computer can be used to recreate a model of an island. We can then observe the effect of water depth, erosion and sunlight on the island and the coral growth over time. As the island sinks we can calculate how the coral reef develops as sea level varies over time, and compare it to real life observations. If the calculated model reefs are similar to the real world reefs then Darwin's hypothesis is valid. Moreover, if they are not the same then the hypothesis is falsifiable. This is due to the fact that the calculated data has been modelled and tested over the passage of thousand of years, under the same circumstances. Therefore, if the calculated models is different than real world reefs then the Darwin's hypothesis was not the cause of them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He suggested that this is going to happen to all of the world's volcanic islands. As tectonic plates move, volcano rocks cool down as they are carried away from a volcanic hot spot, this causes the island to sink as much as few millimeters a year. A possible flow in Darwin's hypothesis, as some researchers from MIT recently found, is this theory can't explain the trajectories of other volcanic ocean island systems around the world, such as the Hawaiian islands. These islands show a different progression. The researchers found a fringing reef where they expected to find no reef development at all. Moreover they found drowned barrier reefs where they expected living barrier reefs. The Hawaiian islands were not sinking into atolls like the other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is war, bloodshed, and acts of crime that no person should every have to go through. World War II is regarded as one of the worst things that could have ever happened on Earth. World War II is used enormously in literature especially in literature explaining the awful effects of war. Some examples of these pieces of literature are "The Lord of the Flies" and "The Coral Island". "The Lord of the Flies" is one of most regarded tells of societies conflicting in a simplistic version through the eyes of boys stranded on an island. "The Coral Island", a similar plot to "The Lord of the Flies" shows how even through the eyes of children someone can see the problems of conflict in the real world. William Golding, the author of "The Lord of the Flies" strongly influences how the characters in the story react to their horrible situation through his own experiences. These two books show how a society will instead of try to get along through peace and compromise will instead venture for hardship through bloodshed. The author of "The Lord of the Flies" is closely related to these same hardships. William Golding was a sailor in World War II and saw death and all sorts of evil. He was first hand in the death of many men and was only a pawn in the war and saw only evil from the war. • 35. Deep Valley Of Despairs : Mountaintops Or Deep Valley Of... Mountaintops or Deep Valley of Despairs "Transformation is a process and as life happens there are tons of ups and downs. It's a journey of discovery – there are moments on mountaintops and moments in the deep valleys of despairs." Rick warren in the above quote has said one single sentence but with an immense meaning behind it. Thus, this quote sums up the journey of my life and how my journey of discovery started as tough, harsh and brutal, it also left me feeling futile, but look I stand here, I have faced it. Nevertheless, I never expected it to be a journey that was always on mountaintops, neither did I feel this journey to be in the deep valley of despairs, never expecting it to leave me disheartened at points. A straight road will lead you to dull journeys but if it is a rough road you will feel the bumps, but in the end, it will lead you to greatness. So, my journey starts in the year 2011, where I grew up in a City of India, Hissar, speaking the native language Hindi. The 11 years of my life which I spent speaking the native language amongst some other words, from the 26 plus languages that India offers. Nevertheless, that was not a barrier for me to not speak English, as my school being an English Medium School, where if you spoke in the native language, you would pay a fine of 10 Rupees. So, it wasn't tough for me to speak English. The difficulty being, my mother tongue being spoken at home and other side English is mandatory to be spoken in school, making it problematic for me to combine the two totally different environments. Consecutively, leading into my prevalent barrier which stopped me from being able to fluently speak English. Accordingly, my Father always says respect is an essential, needs to be earned not forced and the only way to earn someone's respect is if you can communicate in different languages. Furthermore, he said "English is the key to respect and power." My journey in India, was all on top of mountains, nevertheless I went through the deep valley of despairs, when I came to Australia. The first few months when my family moved to Australia, in 2011, it was rather difficult for me to understand and be able to speak English. This is because there are significant ... Tourism in Australia has evolved over the years and continues to increase to this day, however it is the effects that tourists have the ability to place on the Southern Great Barrier Reef which are potentially threatening for, not only the reef of lady Elliot Island, however, the corals surrounding it. "International visitations within Australia alone reached 3.9 million visitors within the first 7 months of 2014, which was an increase of approximately 9.5%, a number which continues to rise" (Tourism Australia, 2015). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although scientists are not able to depict exactly when humans first came into contact with the reef, evidential estimations state that the Great Barrier Reef was first formed approximately 500,000 years ago, with the current reef state being formed about 6,000 to 8,000 years old. Coral reefs exist all over the world and are generally known as being one of the most diverse, intricate and beautiful of all existing marine habitats. They have many varying structures which are developed by algae and are symbiotic with various reef building corals which are referred to as, zooxanthellae (algae). There are many other factors such as, coralline algae, sponges and other various organisms that are combined with a number of cementation processes which also contribute to reef growth, (CORAL REEFS, 2015). As can be seen in appendix 2, Lady Elliot Island is located, approximately 46 nautical miles north–east off the coast of Bundaberg and is accessed from the Hervey Bay airport. The island covers an estimated area of approximately 45 hectares. Lady Elliot Island itself caters for approximately 150 day guests, and 100 overnight guests at the one given time and offers various activities such as, reef walking, scuba diving, night trail walking, glass bottom boat tours and various, fish feeding, bird watching and guided tour activities. • 37. Lark Coral Reef Essay PCBs were identified in all reef surface sediment samples, reflecting worldwide pollution by these compositions in the coral reef sediments of the fragile ecosystem at Kharg and Lark coral reefs, the Persian Gulf. Hereupon, the total concentrations of these detected 20 PCB congeners in the Kharg and Lark coral reefs were also selected to exhibit the PCB contamination grades along with ecological risks in this environment. The mean concentration of the total PCBs (∑20В¬PCBs) in the reef surface sediments of the 16 sampling sites on the Kharg Island ranged from 0.25 to 7.45В¬ng.g–1 dw, with an overall mean value of 3.12 ng.В¬g–1dw,whilst ∑20В¬PCBs varied from 0.04 to 2.83 with a total average of 1.04 ng.В¬g–1dw at Lark Island on July 2014(Table).in January 2015, ∑20В¬PCBs oscillated 0.50 to 9.12(overall average:4.45) and 0.07 to 5.62 at Kharg and Lark coral reefs ,respectively(Table).Significant spatial ... • 39. Lord of the Flies, Coral Island and the Role of Adults -... It is known that to fully appreciate the novel "Lord of the Flies" (1954) by William Golding (1911–1993) it is necessary to have read Robert Michael Ballantyne's (1825–1894) "Coral Island" (1858), or at least to understand its theme and treatment. And so, since it was Golding's intention to set himself to write an island story that deliberately challenged Ballantyne's model in "Coral Island" –by inverting its assumptions and values– we can explore multiple angles from which the two novels can be compared and studied. An item which seems quite interesting when analysing both texts is that one related to civilization and its adult exponents. After a thorough reading and focusing on very clear and specific elements we happen to notice the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Or, How can an ambassador of an atomic war stand for the parental protection or even a mature model to be followed? The naval officer's ignorance, his lack of understanding of what has been going on, is ironical.4 Furthermore, what Golding is trying to make clear at this instance is the decadent figure of the human adult, and by extension, of the whole human civilized world. Let us now turn to R.M. Ballantyne's "Coral Island". Here, the concern about civilization, seems to be very well defined as well as good and evil are so clearly separated that there cannot be any conflict between them.5 In spite of this, when we come to a closer look we find a special complexity within a number of characters. Everything about Ballantyne's boys, who are older by some years than Golding's boys, is confident and positive. The novel as a whole, pictures the assumptions and values of the Victorian period in affirming progress, imperialism, self–reliance, the Creator, the goodness of nature and of human nature– when Christianised at least 6 Actually, this is quite an interesting item to focus on. On the one hand there are the dark–skinned people referred to as "the savages", who are in fact the native inhabitants from the neighbouring islands. They are a kind of primitive adults, constantly characterised as cruel, uncivilised inferior beings. Their rituals, their form of life, the whole of their culture is described as barbarian and demoniac and Ralph, our young narrator, is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. The Green Island Environmental Report GREEN ISLAND ENVIRONMENTAL REPORT Overview: The Green Island is situated approximately 27km offshore Cairns Queensland. It stands to be 12 hectares in size being only the coral cay with a rainforest. The island ranges from tropical to wet season within the months of January to March bringing an average annual rainfall of about 2m. It is formed by the wave action pushing rubble debris onto leeward side (calm side) of a reef flat and with perfect conditions these debris and rubbles grow into a small island. Tourism rationales for development on Green Island can benefit in employment opportunities, socio–economic development of areas which would help foster economic activities around the island. Environmental best practice refers to the applications used in the most appropriate and beneficial way in the combination of environmental control measures and strategies. Green Island follows the regulations in relation to environmental best practice however the need for such applications to be developed is increasing as carbon emissions in the world are increasing which is why the objective of not leaving behind a carbon footprint needs to be achieved by Green Island. The small Danish island of Samsoe is another project similar to Green Island where CO2 neutrality is the goal to be achieved, however, at the moment car emissions are not as effective in terms of best practices therefore in order to counter such a pollution problem electric cars have been recommended.
