The market for farm produce is volatile, reflecting changes in climate as well as market trends. As
such it is often difficult to predict harvest yields. Overproduction in 2000 resulted in the price of raw
cranberries falling from over $60 a barrel to under $20. Atlantic Quench responded to the volatile
market by reducing its advertising and marketing budget. In addition to cutting back on expenditure,
the co–operative paid the farmers $12 a barrel instead of the $18–a–barrell market price. As a result
the relationship between the management of the co–operative and the farmers deteriorated, and the
farmers exercised their power as shareholders of the co–operative by voting out four successive
Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) between 2000 and 2003.
When Chuck Berrie was appointed CEO in 2003, his immediate priority was to discuss with the
farmers whether or not a co–operative approach to managing the business was still an appropriate
and preferred option. The CEO had previously spent six years working for another co–operative as
Chief Marketing Officer at Welch Foods Inc. During those six years he had contributed to doubling
the market share of the organisation. According to Berrie, 'The beauty of being a co–op is not being
judged by quarterly results, but by generations passing on to the next generation.' Indeed, many
Atlantic Quench farmers are third– and fourth–generation owners and one is seventh–generation.

The Story Of My Life
The afternoon prayers from the mosque down the block, drowned out the harsh metal sounds Mum
was making with her pots and pans. I wondered when she got up to cook, an early riser myself, I
heard her bustling about in the kitchen before dawn. The aroma of fresh rosemary and cranberries
made my stomach make the most horrid noise, as I had skipped breakfast, but for this occasion, it
was worth the wait.
The prayer call ended and I Mum took out the plates; the fine china, not our usual boring ones. This
was my cue to help her set the table, as Dad was going to come home from the mosque soon. Mum
appreciated my help but she always switched things around after I had placed everything. I was
preoccupied, yearning to devour everything to care ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dad kept reaching for the mashed potatoes, which were the furthest from him and Mum, had frown
lines etched across her face. She switched up the plates because she wanted the healthier sides to be
closer to Dad's plate. Her plan didn't work, as Dad's plate was stacked with mashed potatoes and
turkey, with only small helping of the fruits and vegetables. Dad noticed her frown lines and
laughed. "Darling, come on, its Christmas!" Mum's frown lines disappeared and she responded,
"Okay sweetheart but tomorrow we are going to the gym to burn these off!"
Mum's plate was the rainbow; she had packed everything healthy onto her plate and just a spoonful
of mashed potato on the side. She didn't touch the turkey. I had asked her a few years ago why she
didn't eat turkey and she just said she didn't like the taste. I had seen old photographs of Mum and
her family during Christmas and they always had ham instead of turkey. Dad didn't eat ham at all
and he didn't like the idea of me eating it either so I only ever tasted it until I moved out, years later.
However, at the time I thought it was odd that Mum didn't have ham around the house even though
she liked it. A few weeks before Christmas, we went out for lunch and she got a ham sandwich. She
told me not to mention it to Dad. The guilt must have taken a toll on her, because after we got home,
I heard her throwing up.
Mum couldn't finish the helpings on her plate so she started feeding my Dad. She made airplane

Case Study Of Cranberry Juice
According to Mintel in 2017, Coca–Cola, the parent company of Minute Maid, is first in sales of
juice with 17.2% of the market share. PepsiCo, which owns Tropicana, is second in sales with
12.5% of the market share. Ocean Spray is fourth with 6.4% of the market share. Ocean Spray's
considerable market share in the cranberry juice category indicates that no other companies pose a
significant threat. Instead, Ocean Spray should focus on stimulating primary demand for cranberry
juice as opposed to other types of juice to compete with larger companies that offer a variety of
juice products such as orange juice, lemonade, etc. Although Minute Maid and Tropicana are not
specifically in the cranberry industry, they are Ocean Spray's biggest ... Show more content on

Similar to Ocean Spray, they spend the most on Cable Television. The biggest takeaway from this
company is that they spend most of their ad spending capital on magazines, whereas Ocean Spray
eliminated that category all together (Redbooks, 2017). Moreover, Tropicana spends more than
double on advertising than that of Ocean Spray and Minute Maid. Tropicana spent around $64.5
million in 2015 and around $54 million in 2016. Similarly to Ocean Spray, they stopped spending
money on radio and newspaper advertising in 2016. Additionally, Tropicana also spends around $4
million magazines which is similar to Minute Maid's approach (Redbooks, 2017).
Advertising Agencies: Ocean Spray v. Competitors
Ocean Spray, Minute Maid, and Tropicana all use large agencies to promote their products.
According to Redbooks, Ocean Spray is represented by Zenith, a company who provides them with
Digital, Media, Media Planning, Media Buying, and Social Media services. Minute Maid uses
BBDO for its Broadcasting, Digital, Print, Social, and Creative. And Tropicana combines services
from three: Ogilvy and Mather for print, Doner for Media Buying, and UM NY for Digital,
Experiential, and Social Media services (2017). All three juice companies likely owe a large portion
of their popularity and notability to these agencies.

Thanksgiving Persuasive Techniques
This recipe can be found on a webpage, which means that the sides are filled with advertisements
for other great dishes to cook. Most of the suggestions are holiday themed, since Thanksgiving has
just passed, and cranberry sauce is associated with Thanksgiving in America. The structure is
simple, looking like something out of a Western cookbook. On the top, there is a depiction of what
the cranberry sauce should look like, the amount of time it takes to prepare and cook the sauce, and
how many people it serves. Underneath that, there is a sentence exclaiming that the dish is delicious
and the last recipe you will ever try. Next, they list the ingredients, and give the instructions. This is
easily followed, and simple for this ritualized dish. The techniques in this recipe are extremely
simple, requiring only a pot, a heat source, preferably a stove, and a cooling area. Water and sugar
are brought to a boil. Once they are boiling, the cranberries are added, and heated until they
explode. Then, they are cooled to form a gelatinized dish. Although it takes three hours to make, the
process itself is not difficult. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
of cranberries, 2 cups of water, and 2 cups of sugar. Cranberries are native to the northeastern
United States, which is why they are important during the Thanksgiving Feast. Thanksgiving is
meant to commemorate the first feast between pilgrims and natives (before we killed them all
brutally, but that's another story). For this reason, the foods served are supposed to represent what
was served during the first Thanksgiving. Since cranberries are native to the region, many believe
that they were present during the first Thanksgiving. However, I highly doubt that they were
sweetened by sugar, which was brought to this region through trade. It is probable that this tradition
came to be through time and legend, since Thanksgiving did not become a national holiday until

National Cranberry Cooperative Essay
Problem Statement: The National Cranberry Cooperative is having issues at their RP1 with trucks
and drivers spending too much time waiting before the berries have been unloaded, employee
absence has caused the overtime costs to skyrocket, and the grading process of berries needs to be
altered.
Analysis:
Problem 1:
When the trucks first arrive at RP1 the employees duty is to grade the berries by sampling a small
amount of the berries. The grades the berries are given are from 1 being poorest of color, to 2A, 2B
or three being the greatest number, which means that berry or berries are the best. When giving this
part of the process a first glance, it can be assumed to be very inaccurate because the person is not
sampling all of the berries. There was a premium of 50 cents per bbl paid for ... Show more content

The dryers are only capable of processing 600 barrels per hour. The milling process is utilized at the
same time as the dryers, therefore it limits the capacity to 800 bbls per hour.
Problem 3:
Will Walliston, the company's superintendent, was forced to put 20 workers on payroll to ensure that
15 workers will show up to work. It's clear that the company has a big problem with employees
showing up for work. This problem translates into workers putting in extra hours and racking up the
overtime pay. By examining Figure E, I can tell that trucks arrive at 7 a.m. to unload the berries. At
7 a.m. the only workers there are those who work in receiving.
Figure E shows me that there isn't anyone there to expedite the process by destoning, dechafting,
and drying the berries. The case study examined this process and found that it takes dumpers 5 – 10
minutes to do the job. This underutilization of employees has an effect on each step of the process
throughout the whole day and in result overtime hours rack up each day on each shift because
deliveries are there with the product and it reduces the volume of each

Comparison Of Sangria And Cranberry Juice
Sangria and cranberry juice do look similar but maybe someone would have double checked
considering the drink was going to a 2 YEAR OLD. Last Friday, Derek Gilliam took his family to
Texas Roadhouse to celebrate his 25th birthday. Standard family night out, nothing to see here. His
2–year old daughter asked for a glass of cranberry juice from her parents (what a classy toddler!) so
obviously, they obliged. After the little girl gave it a couple sips, she mentioned to her parents that it
tasted funny. When her parents went to check it, they realized the server gave her SANGRIA instead
of CRANBERRY JUICE. For any first timers here, sangria usually includes large amounts of red
wine and brandy. So yes, it is very different than mom–approved

Additional saving in time can be achieved if we add one dryer taking the truck drying capacity 800
bbls. per day. Wet berries will be accumulated at rate of 1050 (i.e. arrival rate) – 800 (i.e. wet
berries processing rate) = 250bbls/hr. For 12–hr shift of trucks depositing wet berries, we have total
inventory of wet berries = 12*250 = 3000 bbls and this can be accommodated in the holding bins.
The truck waiting has been reduced to zero. This also has the advantage that the workers at the
receiving crew will now be working only for 12 hrs as compared to 15hrs 40min with only three
dryers and processing starting at 7am. If we install one more dryer, it will help us in dealing with the
uncertainties as the arrival of berries can be very erratic over the season and shoot unto 22000 per
day. But the cost benefit of the second dryer should be analyzed. Converting the bins for holding
both dry and wet berries would help us cope with uncertainty in ratio of wet and dry berries arriving
at a particular time. Converting the bins will lend more flexibility. And reduce waiting time further
in the case that wet berries arrival more than expected 70% ratio. 6.) Bag pack or Bulk Pack As
given in the bag packing is costlier in terms of more packaging cost ($0.17/ bbl more), freezing cost
and also in terms of using more of the drying capacity which is the bottleneck operation in the
processing of wet berries. So it appears that bag packing should

busy day, what is RP#1's current maximum throughput rate? The separator line could process up to
450 bbls/hr. instead of 400 bbls/hr. The other bottleneck for this question is dryer process. So the
maximum throughput rate should be: 600+450=1050 bbls/hr. 3. Assuming that processing starts at 7

To improve this yield, Schaeffer was considering the installation of a light meter system. This
system was projected to cost $40,000 and would require a full–time skilled operator at the same pay
grade as the chief berry receiver. With an increasing percentage of wet berries coming to the plant,
superintendent Walliston considered converting some of holding bins 1–16 so they could be used for
wet berries also. He was also considering buying a few new dryers as capital investment but
wondered what the benefits might be of adding more dryers and whether those benefits would
warrant the cost. 5. Costs and Benefits of Adding the 5th Kiwanee Dumpster Costs * Initial cash
investment of $75,000 * Use of space Benefits * Reduce truck wait time * Decrease bottle neck *
Decrease overtime costs * Increase capacity for storing cranberries 6. Cost * $10,000 cost to
upgrade dry to wet/dry * Will have to buy new dryers to account for increase in wet berries
processed through dechaffing * Wet berries have to also be dried. This adds an hour to the total
processing time as it takes one hour to dry 200 bbls per dryer. However, since there are only 2 steps
to each process (dry: dechaff, destine; wet: dechaff, dry) there really is no time added to the whole
process * Increase in wet fruit means that 8 to 9 workers have to stay overtime more often because
wet fruit cannot sit

National Cranberry Cooperative (Abridged)
On February 14, 1981, Hugo Schaeffer, vice president of operations at the National Cranberry
Cooperative (NCC), called his assistant, Mel O'Brien, into his office and said:
Mel, I spent all day yesterday reviewing last fall's process fruit operations at receiving plant #1
[RP1] with Will Walliston, the superintendent, and talking with the co–op members
[growers] in that area. It's obvious to me that we haven't solved our problems at that plant, yet. Even
though we spent $100,000 last winter for a fifth Kiwanee dumper at RP1, our overtime costs were

Some significant trends are observable in Table A. Probably the most important trend was the
growing surplus of cranberries produced over those utilized. This surplus was serious enough by
1978 for the growers to resort to the Agriculture Marketing Agreement Act of 1937. Under this act,
growers can regulate and control the size of an agricultural crop if the federal government and more
than two–thirds of the growers agree to a plan for crop restriction. In 1978 this act was used to

The Cranberries Pros And Cons
The Cranberries The cranberries originally started out at The Cranberry Saw Us. Based out of
Limerick Ireland. After their original singer left the band put out an ad in 1990 for a female singer.
Dolores O'Riordan responded and after coming up with a rough draft of the song Linger was hired
immediately. After Dolores joined the band released a mix tape that sold out the 300 original copies.
After this the band decided to shorten its name to The Cranberries. The band consisted of vocalist
Dolores O'Riordan, Noel Hogan as guitarist, Mike Hogan as the bassist and Fergal Lawler as the
drummer. The band's music style fell under the alternative rock genre but is sometimes referred to as
Celtic Rock. A few of the main influences that the band listed are R.E.M, U2, and Peter Gabriel.
Fallowing their initial success the band decided to release another mix tape that consisted of the
early versions of two of their biggest songs. The hype from this release caught the band a lot of
attention which eventually ended up in record labels in a bidding war over the young band. When
the dust settled the band had signed on with island records. The all of the albums that the band

Cranberry Drink : Cross-Category Management Process
What process should you use?
The process that should be followed and used is the eight–step category management process. The
first step of this process is category definition. This case is focused on the shelf stable juice and
juice drink category which consists of Cranberry Juice Cocktail, CranApple, CranGrape, and
CranRasberry. The second step of this process is known as category role where we are asked to
assign a category role based on a cross–category analysis. The Shelf stable juice and drink category
is routine as it is in the store to help develop the retailer as a store of choice, but it is not the primary
category provider. The third step is known as category assessment and with the data provided it can
be seen that the shelf stable juice and drink category represents over $2 Billion in total US Sales
volume annually. When diving more into the subcategories, the cranberry drinks and grapefruit
categories alone represent over $750 million in sales volume for Ocean Spray. Taking a closer look,
by looking at the data provided, at Stop & Shop, Cranberry makes up 47% of the category share and
grapefruit makes up 22% of the share while 31% of the category is other juices and drinks. Step four
is category scorecard, here I would want to work with Stop & Shop to create targets and goals that
do not just positively impact Ocean Spray, but positively affect their category overall to increase
store profits. One target goal I would create is that Stop & Shop should look to

The bargaining power of buyer (consumers) can place the firm under pressure. A survey conducted
on global fruit juice market in 2012 reported that the consumers drivers basically are value for
money, health, indulgence, convenience and ethical quality (SGF Forum, 2012). Consumers are
fully aware of the health benefits associated with cranberry juice, and AQC's wide range of
cranberry juice products (pure, blended, white, and light) would answer their need. However,
consumers may not know that AQC is the major producer of cranberry juice drinks, and buy cheaper

Just you know, cranberry juice is acidic. Despite the whole alkaline / acidic myth, we recommend
using cranberry juice as part of a healthy diet. The reason for this is that our urine should be acidic.
This means that our kidneys are working properly and filter toxins.
Acidic nature also helps to reduce bacteria in the urethra, there is almost no chance of being infected
in a healthy, acidic urine. It only happens when processed foods, fake alkaline water, and bad dosage
are bombarded on our bodies, which are unable to keep our urine away from the bacteria.
Types of Cranberry Juice
Unfortunately, the majority of cranberry juice goes into making mixes and cocktails. The juice you

Literary Theories on Marxism
The three analytic paragraphs on the song Zombie, the essay entitled The Closing of the (North)
American Mind, and the documentary film Born Into Brothels showcase the literary theories on
Marxism, Post–colonial criticism, and feminism. The paragraphs show how people struggle in their
own societies in different aspects, politically and socially. Because all three pieces show struggle in
all texts, the unifying theme is how people react and overcome the struggles that they face.

Another post–colonial issue seen in the text was the issue of power dynamics. Being a colony of a
powerful empire, the colonized are subjects of the colonizers. Because of rising tensions between
the colonized and the colonizers, both are struggling to gain power and influence over the people.
The IRA, being the colonized, prevents the colonizers from gaining any more power in their land.
The colonizers, on the other hand, lose its influence and power over the colonized as the people
became more aware and active in the independence movement. The independence movement in
Ireland started in the 1920s, a period when the British Empire was starting to fall apart. The conflict
between the two warring factions had resulted into a bloodbath since the start of their resistance to
the colonizers. Because of the hatred against the colonizers, the oppressed colonized people fought
back in order to remove them physically and mentally out of their land. The power struggle between
the two belligerent nations had disrupted peace in the country, which resulted to many innocent
deaths. This is evident in the text when the resistance fighters and the colonizers are fighting "with
their tanks and their bombs, and their bombs and their guns" (O'Riordan). War for power and
influence had made Ireland into a dangerous society where its people use force as a means of
expressing their sentiments against colonial rule. Issues in

this still an ongoing problem worldwide? Could it simply be the basics of hygiene or just patient

different interventions that will aid in lowering the risk of these hospital acquired infections. In the

Cruisin Week Research Paper
If you were a governor of a city would you want to make more money? Or would you rather see
your local businesses collapse to the ground because no money is being made. Every year thousands
of people go to Ocean City just to ride their car down coastal highway. Here is why cruisin week is
a positive outcome for Ocean City. Cruisin week is helpful to ocean city because it bring money to
the area. "More than 2,300 hot rods, classics, muscle cars, trick trucks and customs will be driven
down Coastal."During this time more then three thousand hot rods come from over twenty plus
states also including Canada. It's a great way to start summer break. When people from around the
United states come to ocean city money is spent on businesses. Many local business make most
their money during these three days. People come to see hot rods, burnout contest, and drag racing.
All of these shows are done at private businesses that are safe and controlled. The more fun people
are having the more money people spend. Also, This bring tourism to the beach. When tourism
occurs, then the place gets know more. There are many things to do in ocean city. This is why even

ocean city. Last year for example when I was driving up and down costal i drove past the scene were

The four specific databases that were used in this research are, Cinahl, Medline, Joanna Briggs and
Cochrane Library. All of these databases were chosen because they provided up to date peer
reviewed evidence that was relevant to the search terms. This ensures that the evidence that was
found was relevant and reliable. The Cinahl website was useful to gather background information on
the topic such as how a UTI is contracted and how it effects the body. The Cochrane Library and
Medline website was useful to because it gave specific information on studies that had already been
done by other researchers. This helped to ensure that the study that is being undertaken was
searching for the right results.
Types of Evidence
The five types of evidence that have been secured when researching are as follows. The pieces of
evidence are in numerical order, where 1 is the strongest evidence found and 4 is the weakest. 1.
Craig, JC., Jepson, RG., Mihaljevic, L., (1998)
Craig, Jepson, Mihaljevic provided a clear and understandable analysis of the use of cranberries in
the treatment of UTI's. Their evidence shows that the use of cranberry capsules when the person
knows that they may receive a UTI (in surgical catheters) reduces the contractibility by half. This
evidence was relevant to the PICO question.
The analysis was found in the database of systematic reviews.

Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my
covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters
become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and
remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."
So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on
the earth."
When Adam and Eve sinned, it did not make God happy. So in order to cleanse the earth, He had
Noah gather up two of every animal and make an arc for the animals and Noah's family. God then
began to flood the earth. Since Noah was faithful, God kept him and his family safe from the flood.
Then God put a big rainbow in the sky to remind us that He would never do that again. This
rainbow reminds us that when we are in times of trouble, God will protect us.
The whole world will never again be covered over by water, but that doesn't mean we won't have

The 16S rRNA gene sequences amplified from cranberry bogs resolved into 49 bacterial phyla. The
overall bacterial composition of the different samples was similar, particularly among the six most
highly–represented groups (Fig. 1). Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and
Verrucomicrobia were the most dominant phyla (relative abundance > 5 %) in every sample,
together accounting for about 78 % of the bacterial sequences in the soils examined. The
Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi were also major constituents of each sample site. Cyanobacteria,

of Deltaproteobacteria, DA052, and Sphingobacteria (Table 1S). Members of the dominant classes
Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Sphingobacteria showed similar patterns between sample
sites. However, Deltaproteobacteria had a higher relative abundance at RP in comparison with SB or
HH1, and Elusimicrobia was in higher abundance at RP than at HH1. Levels of Nitrospirae and
Spirochaetes were the highest at RP than in all other samples. While SB samples had a greater
abundance of Acidobacteria snf DA052 compared to HH1 samples, the situation was reversed in the
case of Solibacteres, with HH1 samples showing greater relative abundance. Spartobacteria,
Armatimonadia, and Nostocophycideae were found to be represented more at HH1 than at SB or
RP, but higher numbers of Ktedonobacteria were seen at RP and SB than at HH1. The relative
proportion of Gammaproteobacteria also was higher at HH3 and SB than at HH1 (Table 1S). The
ten most abundant bacterial families detected in our study were Koribacteraceae (Acidobacteria),

Cranberry contains high levels of nutrients and bioactive molecules that have health‐promoting
properties. The purpose of the present studies was to determine if cranberry extracts (CEs) contain
phytochemicals that exert anti‐inflammatory effects. The human monocytic cell line THP‐1 was
treated with two CEs (CE and 90MX) and subsequently challenged with Lipopolysaccharides

Cranberry Industry Essay
The major trends of the cranberry industry and the problems facing RP#1
There are several major trends that we can observe in the cranberry industry for the period of 1945–
1979 (See Table 1 in the Appendix).
First, there is a steady production increase in each of the five–year periods: from 615,000 barrels in
1945–1949 to 1,546,120 barrels 30 years later. The production growth was caused by the increasing
mechanisation of cranberry industry. For example, water harvesting could result in a yield up to
20% higher than that obtained via dry harvesting. Hence, the average barrels per acre grew from
23.7 in 1945–1949 to 73.7 in 1975–1979.
Second, the production growth led to the excess of cranberries produced over those utilized: from

Costs. The additional cost of the current process is $30,000 (investment to convert bins). It is
difficult to calculate the financial benefits from the elimination of queues, though we must not
forget that queues are an issue in the current process during peak days.
Option 2 – Add 1 dryer ($40,000)
Benefits. Comparing to the current process this option would: * Improve the flow rate of the system
by 33% (from 857.1 to 1,142.9 bbls/hr) * reduce the total processing time by 25% (from 18.67 to 14
hours) * reduce overtime labour costs by (18.67 – 14)*4.5*20*20 = $8,406 per 20 days * reduce
overtime hours by 4.67*20*20 = 1,868 worker–hours * eliminate queues
Another benefit is that the fewer overtime hours RP1 has, the easier it will be to find enough
seasonal workers. However, the dryers' stage is still the bottleneck in the process with a utilisation
rate (16,000/12)*0.7/800 = 116.7%. See Table 6 in the Appendix.
Costs. The additional cost to the current process is (40,000 – 8,406) = $31,594. That means that
during those 20 days the benefits mentioned above would directly offset $8,406 of $40,000
investments. Assuming the same level of supply (16,000 bbls/day), the total investment would be
returned in (40,000/8,406)*20=95 days. It is difficult to calculate the financial benefits from the
elimination of queues and the lower dependence on seasonal workers, though we must not forget
that those are issues

and until 02.40 am and the processing will continue until 8 am. At the same time, to empty the next
slot of berries, the remaining quantity of berries will be arrived. The total amount of berries that will
be processed is 7200 bbls (600 x 12). The total waiting hours for trucks will be as follows:
Processing rate = 600 bbls/hr. Arrival rate = 1050 bbls/hr. Processing time for 3200 bbls of wet
berries = 5.3 hours or 5.18 minutes It means next process will start at 3.24 pm. Total berries will be
processed = 3200+ 2016 (3.36*600) =5216 Remaining berries will be on truck, it means trucks will
have to wait for (12600–5216)*(15.24–10.03)/2/75 = 256. 5 truck hours [15.24 equal to 3.24 pm]
Total number of trucks = 18.32 or 19 (256.5/14) trucks Thus, from the above calculation, it can be
exhibited that trucks have to wait to unload after 10.03 am for total 256.5 truck hours. The
maximum number of trucks that will wait in a day will be 14. Answer 4 Total number of truck hours

This case analysis looks at the two primary problems at the receiving plant no. 1 (RP 1) faced by
National Cranberry Cooperative during the cranberry harvesting period, viz. 1) too much waiting
period for trucks before they unload berries at the RP1 and 2) too much overtime costs. There is also

One more category in between 2A and 3 can also made having a lesser premium than quality 3. But
the various other implications of this step should be taken into account like increased final
processing cost and resentment from the farmers.
5.) Decreasing the truck waiting time
The main problem that the receiving plant is facing is that the trucks have to wait a lot particularly
in the peak season before they can unload the berries. This cope up with the problem the cooperative
installed an additional Kiwanee Dumper last year (i.e. 1969) but that didn't help in solving the
problem.
We first analyze the average truck waiting time for the next year with present capacities and
assuming 70% to be wet berries and rest dry.
As the wet berry processing would take lesser time if it bulk packed, we assume that during the peak
season the wet berries are only bulk packed and dry berries are bag packed.
Assuming a berry arrival of 18,000 bbl in a day (7am to 7pm) in the peak season at a constant rate
and , the average wet berry arrival rate would be (18000/12) * (70/100) = 1050 bbls per day and dry
berry arrival rate would be 450 bbls per day.
.
With the processing starting at 11 am , the holding bins will continue to be filled at this rate subject
to the maximum capacities for wet berries (3200 bbls) and dry berries (4000 bbls). The bins capable
of holding wet berries would be

To begin with, this assignment is done with Kim Seo Yeon (20100472, Sociology). National
Cranberry Cooperative Case is the study done by the Harvard Business School about a process of
warehousing from the delivery and arriving of cranberry to a manufacturing in the warehouse.
National Cranberry Cooperative was an organization formed and owned by growers of cranberries

process could be classified into several operations; receiving and testing, dumping, temporary
holding, destroying, dechaffing, drying separation and bulking and bagging. The objective of the

In addition, wet bin capacity is 3,200 barrels so, according to hourly inventory increasing rate, after
passing 5.25 hours, trucks should wait to unload berries. Moreover, overworks should be done for
22.2 hours because workers should dry 13,300 barrels of the berries, but the drying capacity is only
600 barrel per hour besides the arrival rate is 1,210 barrels per hour.
To solve this problem, I would recommend to add dryers ($25,000 per each and capacity increases
200 barrels per each) or wet bins ($5,000 per each and capacity increases 250 barrels per each) for
short–term. We can suggest three options to solve this matter. First, we can add no dryers but
convert 15 bins. Second, we can add a dryer and convert 6 bins too. Third, we can add 2 dryers, not
to convert any bins. As first option, we need only additional cost of $75,000, which is calculated by
$5,000 x 15 bins. By practicing first option, the wet bin storage increases to 6,950, so we can cover
all the arrivals of the berries this is done for not to make trucks to wait. In the second option, when
we add a dryer, we can handle 800 barrels per hour in drying process and we can reduce the
overworking time from 22.2 hour to 16.6 hour. (13,300 barrel / 800 barrel equals to 16.6 hours per a
day) We can estimate overtime saved cost and it is closely related to labor cost. Labor cost

3. OPPORTUNI TIES FOR EXPANSION OF CANBERRY BOG
Cranberry Bogs had been developed on natural wetland areas. The bogs were formed around the
margin of streams and ponds. Cranberries were one component of ecosystem. The commercial
cultivation of the cranberry altered to the ecological diversity of the bog. The functional value of
wetlands were recognized by environmental activists including physical and hydrologic properties
such as flood protection, ground water recharge and erosion control, biological and biochemical
functions and nutrient provision. Cranberry cultivation posed for developing wetland regulations.
The cranberry was a native wetland plant. The impacts of cranberry production on the aesthetic and
the intrinsic value of the wetland functions related to water quality and biodiversity. The studies
undertaken by the growers and the Ocean Spray suggested that the cranberry bog was low in
diversity. The cranberry growers protected large areas of land from urbanization. Cranberry Bog
were the heart of a unique growing system that included wetlands, uplands, ditches, flumes, ponds
and reservoirs. There were four acres of support land for every acre of cranberry bog. The entire

Hence the government restricted the usage of bogs which were of high value to the environment.

Duncan leaves an olive–green pair of bib–overall–style hip waders outside his bedroom door. These
mysterious rubber boots become the keys to the kingdom–a kingdom of marshy, boggy land and
ponds and thorny bushes and the skeletal outlines of birch and miserly pine that only the north and
its feeble sun can grow.
The waders fit to his under–pits, and his feet swim inside the moulded rubber boots. He begins his
exploration, easing through the turbid waters of the bog, surrounded by cedars and pines that smell
like cinnamon on hot, humid days. Another child might have had a harder time acclimatizing to the

First of all, purchasing a light meter and hiring an operator would reduce large amount of
unnecessary cost incurred from cranberries that are misidentified by the chief berry receiver. The
case reports that half of 450,000 bbls of berries were misidentified as No.3. Since $1.50 was paid
for every No.3 berries, we can say that $337,500 was overpaid. Assuming that the cost of this
system is about $40,000 and the cost of full–time skilled operator is about $34,944 (as a straight–
time pay rate for the full–year employee) per year, we can calculate the return on investment in the
light meter system. The return would be 4.503 ($337,500/$74,944). Even though, the operator gets
paid more than the amount above, the return on the investment would still be positive. Secondly,
purchasing one additional dryer would cost $60,000. Then, the process capacity would increase to
800 bbls/hr. The dry berries (375bbls/hr) and the wet berries (800bbls/hr) would now sum up to

in flow rate could reduce the overtime labor as much as $78,000 (assuming 12,000 over time hours

Cranberry Production in Canada Cranberries are a group of evergreen dwarf shrubs and they are
small, red, acidic berries that are used in often used in cooking. Cranberries overall have many
health benefits as it is most effective for tract infections as it inhibits bacteria from attaching to the
bladder and overall contain many antioxidants. Many believe cranberries grow under water as they
are seen in commercials to be floating on water but what we are seeing is the result of wet
harvesting. The bogs are flooded with up to 18 inches of water and the workers churn the water to
loosen the cranberries from their vines. Bogs are where cranberries come from, they are a soft
ground with acid peat soil where the cranberries grow on long vines.

Essay on National Cranberry Cooperative
National Cranberry Cooperative In early 1981, at the National Cranberry Cooperative's receiving
plant number 1 (RP1), overtime costs are too high and delivery trucks and their drivers have to wait
several hours to unload. The trucks have to wait because the plant's holding bins fill up and there is
not temporary storage. The holding bins fill up because within the cranberry operating system there
is a bottleneck, a place in the production process where production slows down because of a slow or
insufficient number of machines. This bottleneck is being caused by the lower relative capacity of
the dryers. Relieving the bottleneck in the dryers by adding more dryers will allow the trucks to
move through the dumping area more efficiently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adding the dryers will lower the time the cranberries spend in the dryers enough to relieve the
bottleneck. (see exhibit 3)
At 12,600 (70% of 18,000) wet barrels per day, the cranberries currently spend 21 hours a day in the
dryers.
Adding one dryer lowers the time in the dryers to 15.75 hours a day.
Adding two dryers lowers the time in the dryers to 12.6 hours a day. Spending 12.6 hours in the
dryers relieves the dryer bottleneck and the separator becomes the bottleneck. Long–term, RP1
should begin to look at how to relieve this next bottleneck. The time spent waiting for the holding
bins to empty causes extra overtime. Simply adding in two new dryers will decrease this overtime.
The 21 hours currently spent in the dryers will be decreased to 12.6 hours. However, the slowest
process will then be the separator at 15 barrels per hour, so the throughput time is cut by (21–15=6)
six hours. This results in an average of six overtime hours saved daily. Currently, there is no need to
add holding bins. While the bottleneck is still located in the dryers, adding capacity in the holding
bins will only cause the cranberries to wait in the bins longer and will not improve throughput time.
Purchasing two new dryers for the National Cranberry Cooperative's receiving plant number 1 will
reduce the wait time for trucks by speeding up the overall process. The quicker process will result in
a reduction of overtime hours. The two new dryers will

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The market for farm produce is volatile, reflecting changes in climate as well as market trends. As such it is often difficult to predict harvest yields. Overproduction in 2000 resulted in the price of raw cranberries falling from over $60 a barrel to under $20. Atlantic Quench responded to the volatile market by reducing its advertising and marketing budget. In addition to cutting back on expenditure, the co–operative paid the farmers $12 a barrel instead of the $18–a–barrell market price. As a result
  • 2. the relationship between the management of the co–operative and the farmers deteriorated, and the farmers exercised their power as shareholders of the co–operative by voting out four successive Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) between 2000 and 2003. When Chuck Berrie was appointed CEO in 2003, his immediate priority was to discuss with the farmers whether or not a co–operative approach to managing the business was still an appropriate and preferred option. The CEO had previously spent six years working for another co–operative as Chief Marketing Officer at Welch Foods Inc. During those six years he had contributed to doubling the market share of the organisation. According to Berrie, 'The beauty of being a co–op is not being judged by quarterly results, but by generations passing on to the next generation.' Indeed, many Atlantic Quench farmers are third– and fourth–generation owners and one is seventh–generation. Berrie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Story Of My Life The afternoon prayers from the mosque down the block, drowned out the harsh metal sounds Mum was making with her pots and pans. I wondered when she got up to cook, an early riser myself, I heard her bustling about in the kitchen before dawn. The aroma of fresh rosemary and cranberries made my stomach make the most horrid noise, as I had skipped breakfast, but for this occasion, it was worth the wait. The prayer call ended and I Mum took out the plates; the fine china, not our usual boring ones. This was my cue to help her set the table, as Dad was going to come home from the mosque soon. Dad kept reaching for the mashed potatoes, which were the furthest from him and Mum, had frown lines etched across her face. She switched up the plates because she wanted the healthier sides to be closer to Dad's plate. Her plan didn't work, as Dad's plate was stacked with mashed potatoes and turkey, with only small helping of the fruits and vegetables. Dad noticed her frown lines and laughed. "Darling, come on, its Christmas!" Mum's frown lines disappeared and she responded, "Okay sweetheart but tomorrow we are going to the gym to burn these off!" Mum's plate was the rainbow; she had packed everything healthy onto her plate and just a spoonful of mashed potato on the side. She didn't touch the turkey. I had asked her a few years ago why she didn't eat turkey and she just said she didn't like the taste. I had seen old photographs of Mum and her family during Christmas and they always had ham instead of turkey. Dad didn't eat ham at all and he didn't like the idea of me eating it either so I only ever tasted it until I moved out, years later. However, at the time I thought it was odd that Mum didn't have ham around the house even though she liked it. A few weeks before Christmas, we went out for lunch and she got a ham sandwich. She told me not to mention it to Dad. The guilt must have taken a toll on her, because after we got home, I heard her throwing up. • 4. Case Study Of Cranberry Juice According to Mintel in 2017, Coca–Cola, the parent company of Minute Maid, is first in sales of juice with 17.2% of the market share. PepsiCo, which owns Tropicana, is second in sales with 12.5% of the market share. Ocean Spray is fourth with 6.4% of the market share. Ocean Spray's considerable market share in the cranberry juice category indicates that no other companies pose a significant threat. Instead, Ocean Spray should focus on stimulating primary demand for cranberry juice as opposed to other types of juice to compete with larger companies that offer a variety of juice products such as orange juice, lemonade, etc. Although Minute Maid and Tropicana are not specifically in the cranberry industry, they are Ocean Spray's biggest ... Similarly to Ocean Spray, they stopped spending money on radio and newspaper advertising in 2016. Additionally, Tropicana also spends around $4 million magazines which is similar to Minute Maid's approach (Redbooks, 2017). Advertising Agencies: Ocean Spray v. Competitors Ocean Spray, Minute Maid, and Tropicana all use large agencies to promote their products. According to Redbooks, Ocean Spray is represented by Zenith, a company who provides them with Digital, Media, Media Planning, Media Buying, and Social Media services. • 5. Thanksgiving Persuasive Techniques This recipe can be found on a webpage, which means that the sides are filled with advertisements for other great dishes to cook. Most of the suggestions are holiday themed, since Thanksgiving has just passed, and cranberry sauce is associated with Thanksgiving in America. The structure is simple, looking like something out of a Western cookbook. On the top, there is a depiction of what the cranberry sauce should look like, the amount of time it takes to prepare and cook the sauce, and how many people it serves. Underneath that, there is a sentence exclaiming that the dish is delicious and the last recipe you will ever try. Next, they list the ingredients, and give the instructions. This is easily followed, and simple for this ritualized dish. The techniques in this recipe are extremely simple, requiring only a pot, a heat source, preferably a stove, and a cooling area. Water and sugar are brought to a boil. Once they are boiling, the cranberries are added, and heated until they explode. Then, they are cooled to form a gelatinized dish. Cranberries are native to the northeastern United States, which is why they are important during the Thanksgiving Feast. Thanksgiving is meant to commemorate the first feast between pilgrims and natives (before we killed them all brutally, but that's another story). For this reason, the foods served are supposed to represent what was served during the first Thanksgiving. Since cranberries are native to the region, many believe that they were present during the first Thanksgiving. However, I highly doubt that they were sweetened by sugar, which was brought to this region through trade. It is probable that this tradition came to be through time and legend, since Thanksgiving did not become a national holiday until ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

National Cranberry Cooperative Essay Problem Statement: The National Cranberry Cooperative is having issues at their RP1 with trucks and drivers spending too much time waiting before the berries have been unloaded, employee absence has caused the overtime costs to skyrocket, and the grading process of berries needs to be altered. Analysis: Problem 1: When the trucks first arrive at RP1 the employees duty is to grade the berries by sampling a small amount of the berries. The grades the berries are given are from 1 being poorest of color, to 2A, 2B or three being the greatest number, which means that berry or berries are the best. It's clear that the company has a big problem with employees showing up for work. This problem translates into workers putting in extra hours and racking up the overtime pay. By examining Figure E, I can tell that trucks arrive at 7 a.m. to unload the berries. At 7 a.m. the only workers there are those who work in receiving. Figure E shows me that there isn't anyone there to expedite the process by destoning, dechafting, and drying the berries. The case study examined this process and found that it takes dumpers 5 – 10 minutes to do the job. His 2–year old daughter asked for a glass of cranberry juice from her parents (what a classy toddler!) so obviously, they obliged. After the little girl gave it a couple sips, she mentioned to her parents that it tasted funny. For 12–hr shift of trucks depositing wet berries, we have total inventory of wet berries = 12*250 = 3000 bbls and this can be accommodated in the holding bins. The truck waiting has been reduced to zero. This also has the advantage that the workers at the receiving crew will now be working only for 12 hrs as compared to 15hrs 40min with only three dryers and processing starting at 7am. If we install one more dryer, it will help us in dealing with the uncertainties as the arrival of berries can be very erratic over the season and shoot unto 22000 per day. But the cost benefit of the second dryer should be analyzed. Converting the bins for holding both dry and wet berries would help us cope with uncertainty in ratio of wet and dry berries arriving at a particular time. Converting the bins will lend more flexibility. And reduce waiting time further in the case that wet berries arrival more than expected 70% ratio. 6.) Bag pack or Bulk Pack As given in the bag packing is costlier in terms of more packaging cost ($0.17/ bbl more), freezing cost and also in terms of using more of the drying capacity which is the bottleneck operation in the processing of wet berries. So it appears that bag packing should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On a busy day, what is RP#1's current maximum throughput rate? The separator line could process up to 450 bbls/hr. instead of 400 bbls/hr. The other bottleneck for this question is dryer process. So the maximum throughput rate should be: 600+450=1050 bbls/hr. 3. Assuming that processing starts at 7 am on a "busy" day, present the situation during such a day, by constructing an inventory build–up diagram for bins and trucks. He was also considering buying a few new dryers as capital investment but wondered what the benefits might be of adding more dryers and whether those benefits would warrant the cost. 5. • 14. Cranberry Drink : Cross-Category Management Process What process should you use? The process that should be followed and used is the eight–step category management process. The first step of this process is category definition. This case is focused on the shelf stable juice and juice drink category which consists of Cranberry Juice Cocktail, CranApple, CranGrape, and CranRasberry. The second step of this process is known as category role where we are asked to assign a category role based on a cross–category analysis. The Shelf stable juice and drink category is routine as it is in the store to help develop the retailer as a store of choice, but it is not the primary category provider. The third step is known as category assessment and with the data provided it can be seen that the shelf stable juice and drink category represents over $2 Billion in total US Sales volume annually. When diving more into the subcategories, the cranberry drinks and grapefruit categories alone represent over $750 million in sales volume for Ocean Spray. Taking a closer look, by looking at the data provided, at Stop & Shop, Cranberry makes up 47% of the category share and grapefruit makes up 22% of the share while 31% of the category is other juices and drinks. The IRA, being the colonized, prevents the colonizers from gaining any more power in their land. The colonizers, on the other hand, lose its influence and power over the colonized as the people became more aware and active in the independence movement. The independence movement in Ireland started in the 1920s, a period when the British Empire was starting to fall apart. The conflict between the two warring factions had resulted into a bloodbath since the start of their resistance to the colonizers. Because of the hatred against the colonizers, the oppressed colonized people fought back in order to remove them physically and mentally out of their land. Cranberry Industry Essay The major trends of the cranberry industry and the problems facing RP#1 There are several major trends that we can observe in the cranberry industry for the period of 1945– 1979 (See Table 1 in the Appendix). First, there is a steady production increase in each of the five–year periods: from 615,000 barrels in 1945–1949 to 1,546,120 barrels 30 years later. The production growth was caused by the increasing mechanisation of cranberry industry. For example, water harvesting could result in a yield up to 20% higher than that obtained via dry harvesting. Hence, the average barrels per acre grew from 23.7 in 1945–1949 to 73.7 in 1975–1979. Second, the production growth led to the excess of cranberries produced over those utilized: from 0% of ... Option 2 – Add 1 dryer ($40,000) Benefits. Comparing to the current process this option would: * Improve the flow rate of the system by 33% (from 857.1 to 1,142.9 bbls/hr) * reduce the total processing time by 25% (from 18.67 to 14 hours) * reduce overtime labour costs by (18.67 – 14)*4.5*20*20 = $8,406 per 20 days * reduce overtime hours by 4.67*20*20 = 1,868 worker–hours * eliminate queues Another benefit is that the fewer overtime hours RP1 has, the easier it will be to find enough seasonal workers. Unprocessed quantity will be 7,800 bbls (12,600 – 4,800) including 3200 bbls in bins and 4,600 bbls in trucks (7,800 – 3,200). The trucks will continue unloading up to 4,600/600 minutes after 7 pm and until 02.40 am and the processing will continue until 8 am. At the same time, to empty the next slot of berries, the remaining quantity of berries will be arrived. The total amount of berries that will be processed is 7200 bbls (600 x 12). The total waiting hours for trucks will be as follows: Processing rate = 600 bbls/hr. Arrival rate = 1050 bbls/hr. Processing time for 3200 bbls of wet berries = 5.3 hours or 5.18 minutes It means next process will start at 3.24 pm. Total berries will be processed = 3200+ 2016 (3.36*600) =5216 Remaining berries will be on truck, it means trucks will have to wait for (12600–5216)*(15.24–10.03)/2/75 = 256. 5 truck hours [15.24 equal to 3.24 pm] Total number of trucks = 18.32 or 19 (256.5/14) trucks Thus, from the above calculation, it can be exhibited that trucks have to wait to unload after 10.03 am for total 256.5 truck hours. The maximum number of trucks that will wait in a day will be 14. Answer 4 Total number of truck hours to wait = 256.5 hours Cost per hour = $20 Total cost spent by truck waiting on a peak day = $5130 (256.5*$20) Answer 5 One action Hugo Schaffer wants to take is installing a light meter system. But the various other implications of this step should be taken into account like increased final processing cost and resentment from the farmers. 5.) Decreasing the truck waiting time The main problem that the receiving plant is facing is that the trucks have to wait a lot particularly in the peak season before they can unload the berries. This cope up with the problem the cooperative installed an additional Kiwanee Dumper last year (i.e. 1969) but that didn't help in solving the problem. We first analyze the average truck waiting time for the next year with present capacities and assuming 70% to be wet berries and rest dry. As the wet berry processing would take lesser time if it bulk packed, we assume that during the peak season the wet berries are only bulk packed and dry berries are bag packed. Assuming a berry arrival of 18,000 bbl in a day (7am to 7pm) in the peak season at a constant rate and , the average wet berry arrival rate would be (18000/12) * (70/100) = 1050 bbls per day and dry

  • 32. Cranberry and Berries Essay National Cranberry Cooperative Case 20090562 Political Science Junki Hong To begin with, this assignment is done with Kim Seo Yeon (20100472, Sociology). National Cranberry Cooperative Case is the study done by the Harvard Business School about a process of warehousing from the delivery and arriving of cranberry to a manufacturing in the warehouse. National Cranberry Cooperative was an organization formed and owned by growers of cranberries to process and markets their berries. The handling of process fruit RP1 was highly mechanized. The process could be classified into several operations; receiving and testing, dumping, temporary holding, destroying, dechaffing, drying separation and bulking and bagging. The objective of the total ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, wet bin capacity is 3,200 barrels so, according to hourly inventory increasing rate, after passing 5.25 hours, trucks should wait to unload berries. Moreover, overworks should be done for 22.2 hours because workers should dry 13,300 barrels of the berries, but the drying capacity is only 600 barrel per hour besides the arrival rate is 1,210 barrels per hour. To solve this problem, I would recommend to add dryers ($25,000 per each and capacity increases 200 barrels per each) or wet bins ($5,000 per each and capacity increases 250 barrels per each) for short–term. We can suggest three options to solve this matter. First, we can add no dryers but convert 15 bins. Second, we can add a dryer and convert 6 bins too. Third, we can add 2 dryers, not to convert any bins. As first option, we need only additional cost of $75,000, which is calculated by $5,000 x 15 bins. By practicing first option, the wet bin storage increases to 6,950, so we can cover all the arrivals of the berries this is done for not to make trucks to wait. In the second option, when we add a dryer, we can handle 800 barrels per hour in drying process and we can reduce the overworking time from 22.2 hour to 16.6 hour. (13,300 barrel / 800 barrel equals to 16.6 hours per a day) We can estimate overtime saved cost and it is closely related to labor cost. Labor cost ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Uncle Duncan leaves an olive–green pair of bib–overall–style hip waders outside his bedroom door. These mysterious rubber boots become the keys to the kingdom–a kingdom of marshy, boggy land and ponds and thorny bushes and the skeletal outlines of birch and miserly pine that only the north and its feeble sun can grow. The waders fit to his under–pits, and his feet swim inside the moulded rubber boots. He begins his exploration, easing through the turbid waters of the bog, surrounded by cedars and pines that smell like cinnamon on hot, humid days. Another child might have had a harder time acclimatizing to the bugs and the bush, but even floating amid the dense waters of his own loss, August fulfils the number–one requirement of his species: he adapts. August had lived in a large concrete apartment complex in the east end of Scarborough. They would spend the day watching movies and playing video games. Then, everything changed. First of all, purchasing a light meter and hiring an operator would reduce large amount of unnecessary cost incurred from cranberries that are misidentified by the chief berry receiver. The case reports that half of 450,000 bbls of berries were misidentified as No.3. Since $1.50 was paid for every No.3 berries, we can say that $337,500 was overpaid. Assuming that the cost of this system is about $40,000 and the cost of full–time skilled operator is about $34,944 (as a straight– time pay rate for the full–year employee) per year, we can calculate the return on investment in the light meter system. The return would be 4.503 ($337,500/$74,944). Even though, the operator gets paid more than the amount above, the return on the investment would still be positive. Secondly, purchasing one additional dryer would cost $60,000. Then, the process capacity would increase to 800 bbls/hr. The dry berries (375bbls/hr) and the wet berries (800bbls/hr) would now sum up to 1175 bbls/hr, which will increase the utilization rate of separators to 97.91%. The resulting increase in flow rate could reduce the overtime labor as much as $78,000 (assuming 12,000 over time hours of all workers * $6.5/hr) and the return on the investment would be 0.3 (18,000/60,000). • 40. Essay on National Cranberry Cooperative National Cranberry Cooperative In early 1981, at the National Cranberry Cooperative's receiving plant number 1 (RP1), overtime costs are too high and delivery trucks and their drivers have to wait several hours to unload. The trucks have to wait because the plant's holding bins fill up and there is not temporary storage. The holding bins fill up because within the cranberry operating system there is a bottleneck, a place in the production process where production slows down because of a slow or insufficient number of machines. This bottleneck is being caused by the lower relative capacity of the dryers. Relieving the bottleneck in the dryers by adding more dryers will allow the trucks to move through the dumping area more efficiently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adding the dryers will lower the time the cranberries spend in the dryers enough to relieve the bottleneck. (see exhibit 3) At 12,600 (70% of 18,000) wet barrels per day, the cranberries currently spend 21 hours a day in the dryers. Adding one dryer lowers the time in the dryers to 15.75 hours a day. Adding two dryers lowers the time in the dryers to 12.6 hours a day. Spending 12.6 hours in the dryers relieves the dryer bottleneck and the separator becomes the bottleneck. Long–term, RP1 should begin to look at how to relieve this next bottleneck. The time spent waiting for the holding bins to empty causes extra overtime. Simply adding in two new dryers will decrease this overtime. The 21 hours currently spent in the dryers will be decreased to 12.6 hours. However, the slowest process will then be the separator at 15 barrels per hour, so the throughput time is cut by (21–15=6) six hours. This results in an average of six overtime hours saved daily. Currently, there is no need to add holding bins. While the bottleneck is still located in the dryers, adding capacity in the holding bins will only cause the cranberries to wait in the bins longer and will not improve throughput time. Purchasing two new dryers for the National Cranberry Cooperative's receiving plant number 1 will reduce the wait time for trucks by speeding up the overall process. The quicker process will result in a reduction of overtime hours. The two new dryers will ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
