Entry One: Selection of the Service Learning Project
After some research and deliberation, I chose Habitat for Humanity (HFH, 2016) for my service project. There were several reasons that Habitat
for Humanity appealed to me. The first reason is that I consider HFH to be a worthy cause is that I appreciate that it's for a lower income family
that would not otherwise be able to afford a home. The facts that the beneficiaries are expected to help build their home or other HFH homes with
sweat equity, they'll pay a mortgage, combined with the way it's set up so they won't be able to just sell as a short term flip, gives me the impression
that it's not a freebie entitlement program, but a program that promotes responsibility with some life changing results.
I also consider that working on a construction project plays into my strengths. Even though I haven't been hired specifically as a construction worker
since my teen years when pouring concrete every summer, some of my strengths come from my previous education and work as an electro–mechanical
technician along with the all of the construction projects I've completed over the years on the farm and for home improvements which have included
electrical, and plumbing when I've remodeled and added additions and buildings.

The other alternative often discussed is to decrease entitlement spending and other government program. Entitlement spending is money used to fund
programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. In addition, the largest portion of the federal government's budget is spent on defence spending.
The problem is that spending on these programs is growing at a greater rate than the Malaysia economy. This means that the income generated fromtax

So, the deficit just continues to grow. There is no easy solution to the budgetary problems in the Malaysia. Hard choices will need to be made and it

A new trend across America has risen in sports. Event officials are doling out participation trophies in massive numbers. The question is, are these
participation trophies negatively changing the basic American values we treasure in these children? Yes, participation trophies are shaping a new
cultural norm of entitlement and it promotes a new attitude of doing nothing, yet still being rewarded for it. This trend must be put to a halt and
reversed. Participation trophies are not the answer to making kids feel better about themselves. All my life, I have participated in sports. I ran track
and cross country, and played volleyball, basketball, and softball. After all those years in multiple sports, I acquired endless amounts of participation
trophies, medals and ribbons. These awards were given to me in hopes that I would continue to engage myself in the sport or to feel like my
contributions to the team mattered. The adults might have even hoped I would fall in love with the sport. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I
ended up quitting all of those sports excluding softball going into high school. I was not even that bad of a player. I actually was on the A team for a
majority of the teams. Ironically enough, softball was the only sport I did not receive any participation awards throughout elementary and middle

Entitlement Programs Are Good For Us
The entitlement programs are good for us to have but they are out of control. The federal government overspends on these programs leaving no room
for other expenditures. States across the nation are trying to help with the control of the budget. Some have even began to shrink some of these
entitlement programs because the federal government has overspent them. Medicaid being one of the top three entitlement programs has been
significantly decreased in thirteen out of fifty states in America. These states have taken steps forward to try and decreased the extra cost on
entitlements that the federal government has been spending. States are calling out and stating that entitlement programs are too much for the country,
they have said this with the slashing of Medicaid. If the working class has to pay for the lazy man's medical bills is not fair to anyone who pays for
taxes. The biggest reason why the states have decided to cut some cost on Medicaid was because their budgets were strained and need to put it into
balance (Mannion, Chang 2011). If they have the ability to cut the spending on Medicaid why can't the federal government do that also and why can
they not do it to other entitlement programs because if the states can do it and it does not affect them badly then the United States should be able to do

Entitlement for the Ages
Stigmas, judgments, and misconceptions surround the newest generation of today's society, cleverly named the "millennials," like a virus. This
particular generation is often subject to criticism and even mockery, both justified and not justified. Similarly, the generation that is focused on in the
events of the novel "Lucky Jim" by Kingsley Amis has been given the title of "entitled." This conception is shown through various characters and their
respective developments, such as Jim, Dixon, and Bertrand. As Amis develops these characters, we begin to see why their reputation is both justified
and not justified, and Amis leaves most of that interpretation open to the reader. Rather than forcing character traits by explicitly telling the audience
how each character thinks, he uses point of view to open up major character decisions to the reader.
In order to look at the general feelings and actions of characters through the lens of entitlement, it is important to define such a vague and often
overused term. A TIME Magazine article, titled "The Me–Me–Me Generation," focuses on why millennials are the most narcissistic, self–centered
generation in the history of western civilization. This attitude spreads not only among the upper and middle classes but reaches as far as those living in
poverty, who are selfish but for entirely different reasons than their counterparts. According to the study, this movement of thinking inwards began with
trying to artificially inflate the self–esteem of young adults in order to prevent them from thinking terribly about the world around them. That
"self–esteem" movement began in the 70s, a decade of historical significance highlighted by the Cold War. The article further states that not all of this
narcissism is not the fault of millennials, but because of the steady diet of entitlement, they have been fed. The author mentions that kids grow up
watching reality shows, which are "basically documentaries about narcissists." History classes frequently discuss how great the younger generation is
