This document provides an introduction to complete dentures and prosthodontics. It defines dentistry as the profession concerned with preventing and treating oral diseases, including diseases of the teeth and supporting structures. Prosthodontics is described as concerned with restoring oral function, comfort, appearance, and health through replacement of missing teeth and tissues with artificial substitutes or prostheses. Complete dentures are defined as replacements for all missing teeth and associated structures in a dental arch. The document outlines the key components, fabrication process, and functions of complete dentures. It also lists common indications for complete dentures such as extensive bone loss, lack of ability/motivation to maintain natural teeth, or financial limitations precluding alternative treatments.
2. What is definition of dentistry?
Dentistry, the profession concerned with the prevention and treatment
of oral disease, including diseases of the teeth and supporting structures
and diseases of the soft tissues of the mouth.

4. Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics is concerned with the restoration and maintenance of oral function,
comfort, appearance, and health by the replacement of missing teeth and
contiguous tissues with artificial substitutes, or prostheses.
5. Prostheses or Artificial substitutes
IT IS THE REPLACMENT OF AN ABSENT PART OF HUMAN
BODY BY AN ARTIFICIAL ONE.
8. Fully Dentulous or Dentulous :- Having all the teeth in the oral cavity
Partially Edentulous :- Some teeth are missing
Edentulous:- Missing off all the teeth
Treatment options for missing teeth
Edentulous condition:-
complete denture- the replacement of the natural teeth in the arch and their
associated parts by artificial substitutes
partially edentulous :- i. fixed partial denture – a partial denture that is luted or
otherwise securely retained to natural teeth, tooth roots and/or dental implant abutments that
furnish the primary support to the prosthesis
ii. Removable partial denture - PD that can be removed from the mouth
and replaced at will by the patient
9. Complete Denture
The replacement of the natural teeth in the arch and their associated parts by
artificial substitutes
10. Objective of complete denture prosthesis
1. Restoration of esthetics
2. Restoration of speech
3. Restoration of mastication (chewing)
4. Preservation of the remaining tissue health
5. Patient satisfaction and comfort
11. Function of Complete Denture
1. Mastication:- Chew food for swallowing and digestion
2. Speech(Phonetics) :- The teeth either natural or artificial assist the tongue and lips to form
some of the sound of speech.
3. Appearance(aesthetic):- Is influence by the shape of jaws together with the position and
occlusal relation ship of the teeth
4. Health of the alveolar bone and the temporomandibular joins (TMJ)
12. Extensive bone
loss and
periodontal
disease
Lack of
motivation or
ability to
maintain teeth
Gross decay or
abscesses

Lack of financial
resources for

treatments
Indications for Complete Denture
14. Parts of Complete Denture (CD)
1. Denture base – Which cover the edentulous tissue area and carries the artificial
teeth
2. Teeth – which are attached to the denture base for the purpose of chewing, esthetics,
phonetics..etc

Teeth
15. The CD has 3 surface
1. Polished surface
the outer surface of the denture and in contact to the muscle of cheek and tongue
Polished surface
17. 3. Occlusal surface ;-
a surface of posterior teeth or occlusion rim that is intended to make contact with opposing
occlusal surface
occlusal surface
18. CD Types
1. Conventional
2. Immediate – a removable complete denture fabricated for replacement immediately
following the removal of natural teeth
3. Overdenture – a removable denture that covers and rests on one or more remaining natural
teeth, roots and/or dental implants.
4. Single Denture – it is a denture either maxillary or mandibular that is opposed either natural
teeth or removable partial denture or fixed partial or old denture
19. Steps in complete denture fabrication
Clinical steps ( done by Dentist )
1. Diagnostic impression or primary impression
2. Secondary impression
3. Jaw relations
4. Try in
5. Denture insertion
Laboratory steps ( done by Dental Technician)
1. Primary cast
1. Custom tray or special tray
2. Secondary cast or master cast
2. Denture base and occlusal rims
3. Articulation
3. Teeth setting
4. Flasking, dewaxing , acrylisation, curing,
finishing and polishing
20. 1. Clinical step – Primary Impression or Diagnostic Impression
Made with impression compound(thermoplastic resin) or alginate(irreversible hydrocolloid)
21. 1. Laboratory step:- pouring the primary impression and
fabrication of primary cast
Primary cast is fabricated by using the plaster of Paris ( gypsum products – type 2)
22. 1. Laboratory step- fabrication of custom tray or special tray
spacer
Custom tray fabricated
by using self cure acrylic
resin
23. 2. Clinical step- Secondary Impression
Made with elastomeric impression materials
24. 2. Laboratory step:- Pouring the secondary impression
and fabrication of master cast
Master cast(definitive cast) fabricated by using the Dental stone ( Gypsum product type 3)
25. 2. Laboratory step:- fabrication of denture base and occlusal
rims
Denture base or record base if fabricated by self cure acrylic resin or heat cure acrylic resin or metal base
Occlusal rims are fabricated b y using the dental wax
Metal denture base
