Interest groups are essential channels for mobilization of citizens. They work so that the views of
a wider range of citizens are taken into consideration in the democratic processes. However, all
the groups in existence are not equally well mobilized and the ones which put pressure on the
government might not represent the views of all citizens. Also, in most groups issues exists
between internal democratic functioning and professionalization.
The biggest positive of interest groups is that they provide the people a better manner to
influence their representatives on more regular basis. A main aspect of democracy is that people
must control the government. However, people participate in a demcracy only by casting votes
once in a few years. Interest groups fill in this gap. The groups lobby the members of the
government on a regular basis. Thus making the government officials aware of people’s concerns
every day rather than only at election time. Hence, this makes our system more democratic.
The biggest negative is that interest groups may give money an excessive role in politics. Interest
groups tend to be effective when they have a lot of money. They utilize money to hire effective
lobbyists and for campaign contributions etc. If money becomes a critical factor, then only those
groups that have ample money would have their concerns heard. This may diminish the quality
of democracy by favoring the concerns of the rich over others

Interest groups are essential channels for mobilization of citizens..pdf

  • 1. Interest groups are essential channels for mobilization of citizens. They work so that the views of a wider range of citizens are taken into consideration in the democratic processes. However, all the groups in existence are not equally well mobilized and the ones which put pressure on the government might not represent the views of all citizens. Also, in most groups issues exists between internal democratic functioning and professionalization. The biggest positive of interest groups is that they provide the people a better manner to influence their representatives on more regular basis. A main aspect of democracy is that people must control the government. However, people participate in a demcracy only by casting votes once in a few years. Interest groups fill in this gap. The groups lobby the members of the government on a regular basis. Thus making the government officials aware of people’s concerns every day rather than only at election time. Hence, this makes our system more democratic. The biggest negative is that interest groups may give money an excessive role in politics. Interest groups tend to be effective when they have a lot of money. They utilize money to hire effective lobbyists and for campaign contributions etc. If money becomes a critical factor, then only those groups that have ample money would have their concerns heard. This may diminish the quality of democracy by favoring the concerns of the rich over others Solution Interest groups are essential channels for mobilization of citizens.
