Analysing Trailers

Good Will Hunting

• The camera shots of the university campus establish the film’s setting and
perhaps where the film may constantly visit through out to meet specific
characters. We get a sense of privilege and luxury in an academic setting.
• We see a close up shot of two characters face to face close in the frame, close
together, which suggests that there is a relationship between the two characters,
hinting at the film’s narrative and a romantic story line moving through out the
film.
• The slow motion editing showing the protagonist assaulting the police officers
shows a different side of his personality. The different events broken up with
white flashes creates a dramatic impact and emphasis the events.
• The montage footage of the female character suggests an importance to the
protagonist and to the film’s plot.
• The shots of the different characters combined with the narration tells us who
the actors are and shows us who they play in the film. The shots the actors also
make them the selling point of the film. As well as this the audience can already
have a clear understanding of the names of characters and their roles in the
films.
• The soundtrack changes to something upbeat to reflect a change in the pace of
the trailer and possibly the pace of the film.
• The soundtrack changes again as the characters high five, again suggesting a
change in the narrative’s pace.
Forrest Gump

• The trailer starts off with Forrest sitting on a bench, and he's made to stand out
due to him being on his own side of the bench compared to others who sit
directly in the centre or with a friend or family member.
• The use of a voiceover on the montage editing tells the audience, that Forrest is
quite lonely and doesn't have a lot of friends and is quite dependant on Jenny
due to the quote “she's my only friend”. Through this the audience symphonise
with Forrest as we have a deeper understanding of his character.
• The use of a close up of the army poster gives an foreshadowing to the audience
that the army is going to have a significant impact on the story and that there will
be a large amount of army influence as the story goes on and that perhaps takes
a directly different route to what we've seen so far from Forrest as a character.
• From this two shot within the trailer and simple non diegetic music over
the top which has a happy feel to it we can identify that Forrest and
Bobby are going to become great friends within their journey in the
army.
• We identify from this shot how far Forrest has come from the start of the film to
the ending as he is obviously giving an emotional speech to the army and his
fellow workers at the end of his journey. This allows the audience to realise how
much Forrest grows as a character through the film.
22 Jump Street
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP755JkDxyM
• The trailer starts with a two shot which helps the audience identify the two main
characters which the film revolves around. And what type of characters they are
as well as what the series of events will be due to their personalities and actions.
• Lots of use of dialogue explain the film’s plot and the role of the two main
characters who are detectives undercover and also allows the audience to
witness some comedy in the film this happens in particular when they are
speaking to their boss in their undercover warehouse.
• Non diegetic music changes the mood to a happy, fun and party atmosphere
which can be used as a dramatic switch in atmospheres.
• Montage editing is used here to compress down time and give us a overall
impression of some events which happen within the film. And therefore allows
the audience to have an idea of some of the storylines and events that will
happen within the film.
• At the end of the trailer the last shot is used to leave the audience laugh and
make them essentially come to watch the film in the cinema as if they thought
that was funny they possibly would like and experience more humour by
watching the whole film, using a big ending can be a turning point in terms
watching the film and not watching it.
Get Out

• The trailer begins with slow and calm non diegetic sound as our main character
and girlfriend go into dialogue about traveling and meeting her parents which
allows the audience to identify the main characters and where the story line is
leading.
• However the mood and non-diegetic sound turns more drastic and on edge as
they hit a deer on the road and come across a police officer. There are slow black
flashes between scenes to add to the atmosphere as we the audience feel the
mood changing to a darker and more mysterious storyline. Most scenes are
filmed in two angles, shot / reverse shot.
• There a period where we have no non-diegetic sound as we see the key turning
phase in the trailer in the garden scene as the plot twist. There are many close
ups to capture the emotion of the scene and how serious things have become.
• In this scene we see the second key part of dialogue between the main character
and other black character we encounter this reveals how strange a location we
are in.
• The scenes become quicker and the pace begins to quicken as serious events are
revealed which can make the audience question what happens and be intrigued
by what may happen next, there are enhanced sounds to give a more real feel to
punching and the hypnotizing scene.
• The final part of the trailer involves the tense non diegetic sound and enhanced
sounds which give it an edgy horror feel, the audience sees a plot twist also as we
have the image of the deer screaming which makes it feel like a psychological
thriller, which will encourage people to see the film as it has many complicated
points to it.
Insidious
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1YbOMDI59k
• The trailer features a section of non-diegetic sound which is tense and builds up a
sense of suspense while we see only a black screen. There is then a slight pause
before the introduction of more intense non-diegetic music with the film title
appearing in red. This lets the audience understand early that this is an intense
and creepy film and the black and red colour scheme is very much associated
with the horror genre.
• The trailer begins with slow and quite mellow non-diegetic music creating a calm
atmosphere as we are introduced to our main character and the whole family
within their new house. The camera tracks the family and scenes are usually
filmed in group shots.
• Before long we see a transfer from calm non-diegetic music to a tense and on
edge mood with the introduction of another key character who helps the family
announce that there is a demon. With this key line we have intense two shots of
characters interacting with the demon.
• The older women who is helping the family is used in a voiceover to allow the
audience to understanding what is happening and get a clear understanding of
the storyline and what may happen in the key moments of the film.
• Whilst the voiceover goes on we are introduced to the most intense scenes
involving the demon and when we see the Dad in the other world encounters
other creatures and demons.
• The non-diegetic music becomes much quicker and is incredibly intense as it
builds towards the end of the trailer and we see the shots of demons and the
other world, most often in group shots and mid shots capturing the reactions of
the main characters in the key parts of the film.
