Teacher Activities-Practice Daily
1. Daily relaxation activity at Circle Time (see handouts for ideas)
2. Check out Conscious Discipline CD’s with “Calm Your Brain” and “STAR Song”
3. Teach children about feeling vocabulary and role play
4. Use puppets to practice breathing techniques
5. Have your class make a STAR Jar. Use pompoms as “stars.” On a daily basis and
throughout the day, when any child or teacher uses STAR or helps a friend use STAR, he
or she puts a pompom in the jar. Have a STAR party when the jar gets full.
6. Assign a STAR Helper job weekly or daily. This child uses a star wand to remind friends
or teachers to use STAR when they are getting upset.

8. Put STAR Program activities in lesson plans daily throughout the day and incorporate
into your environment
Family Activities-Teacher to help parents learn the STAR Program to use at home
1. Give the Importance of Breathing handout to parents
2. Help the children make a STAR Kit to check out to families with instructions and useful

3. Use STARgrams to tell parents about their child’s successes at using the STAR Program
at school (e.g. Use star stickey notes to write, “Melissa is a STAR! Today she took a deep
breath when a friend grabbed her toy instead of grabbing it back! Ask her to tell you
about this.”
