5 Things to Avoid Driving in the Winter
The winter in Pennsylvania can be rough
on vehicles and drivers. New,
inexperienced drivers in particular are
susceptible to accidents, and the ice used
to melt snow can cause damage to the
underside of the car as well. It would
appear there is very little else to do but
stay at home until Easter, but bills don’t
pay themselves.
Instead, drive smarter when the
conditions are less than ideal. Here are
a few tips to make the trip a bit safer for
you, the family and others on the road. Of course, the most important tip of all –
SLOW DOWN. Even if this means leaving earlier by 10 to 15 minutes, it can make
all the difference. Here are the other tips.
1. Watch your gas – Keep the fuel at a minimum of half a tank is best. Cold
weather can freeze gas lines if there is insufficient fuel. This is good practice
anyway. Gasoline lubricates parts of the fuel system. Keeping the gas
levels up means better lubrication and protection of the fuel system as a
whole.
2. Be ready – Snow and ice can cause even the most experienced driver to
careen off the road and into a ditch or enbankment. Your phone may not be
100 percent your best bet, so keep a blanket, gloves, boots, water, snack and
some entertainment if you have kids with you.
3. Clean the windows completely – It is tempting to clean an area large
enough to see through and be on the way, but this is a potential disaster.
Flying snow can hit another car. While you are at it, run the car through a car
wash about once a week to clean the salt. Be sure it will clean the underside
as well.
4. Snow tires – This is a long term investment, so don’t worry about the initial
cost. With regular maintenance and using them only during the cold months,
snow tires will last longer than the car.
5. Traction control – Newer models feature this, and it is wise to learn how to
use it correctly before you need it. Remember – an ounce of prevention is
worth a full deductible on insurance.
