Driving Tips for Winter
Despite what you may think,
Fall is still in the air. This
means Winter is right around
the corner, and if the current
weather is any predictor,
chances are winter is going
to be fierce. That said, it is a
good idea to be ready for any
potential problems that may
occur. Keep reading to see
what we mean. Your friends
at Steely and Smith want you
to be ready in case of
something serious
happening.
Be Ready
There is nothing funny about snow. You will need the absolute basics for
snow – ice scraper, brush and basic tool kit. Because you may be stuck in
the elements, have a space blanket, extra clothes and gloves to be on the
safe side.
You should have booster cables, a first aid kit and some nonperishable foods
handy. Those who are not wanting to build a kit can find plenty of premade
kits online at any number of locations.
Check tires
There is not much connecting you to the road but your tires. You need to be
sure your tires are in the best possible condition in the winter and all times
for that matter. Proper inflation of tires mean the best possible traction,
best fuel economy and even wear. Checking your tire pressure – regularly –
means the best for your tires at all times.
Are you familiar with the penny test? Hold a common penny with Lincoln’s
head facing down. Put the coin into the tire thread. You want Lincoln’s head
covered by the tire tread. If it is not, it is time to consider new tires.

Skids
Black ice is dangerous. It is when a thin film of ice covers the road and still
appears safe. This makes the road slick. Tires can easily lose traction and
cause a skid. Release your accelerator, turn into the direction of the skid
and keep calm. Stay off the brakes.
Be insured
Steely and Smith realize that accidents happen even with the most
dedicated and safe drivers. We want you to be 100 percent covered in case
of an accident and are able to help you get back on the road quickly. Let us
know how we can help you with any insurance options.
