3. TYRE RAW MATERIAL
PRICES STILL VOLATILE
By MILES MOORE
Volatility in raw materials prices for tyres and rubber goods has moderated since last year, but is far
from gone, according to manufacturers and industry analysts.
Tyre manufacturers generally reported modest increases in raw material expenditures for 2017, but
added that the issue of raw materials prices always bears watching.
Asked about raw materials pricing, Cooper Tyre & Rubber Co. referred to a comment made by Chief
Financial Officer Ginger Jones during the company's fourth quarter/full year 2017 conference call.
Cooper saw an increase of just under 2 percent in its raw material index during the fourth quarter,
from 150.2 to 153.1, Jones said.
"On a year-over-year basis, this index increased by 4.1 percent from the fourth quarter of 2016," she
said. "As we look forward, we anticipate modest sequential increases in raw material costs in each
quarter of 2018, but we remain cautious as this is hard to predict."
Goodyear referred to its 2017 annual report, in which it said it expected its raw material cost to be
roughly flat during the full year of 2018, excluding raw material cost saving measures.
"We expect a benefit of approximately $25 million from price and product mix net of raw material
costs," the company said.
"Natural and synthetic rubber prices historically have experienced significant volatility, and this esti-
mate could change significantly based on fluctuations in the cost of these and other key raw materi-
als," it said.
"We are continuing to focus on price and product mix, to substitute lower cost materials where possi-
ble, to work to identify additional substitution opportunities, to reduce the amount of material re-
quired in each tyre, and to pursue alternative raw materials," Goodyear said.
Price fluctuations in raw materials are not uniform and tend to be bullish, according to Continental
Tyre the Americas L.L.C.
- 01 -
Oil-based materials-including synthetic rubber, carbon black and many chemicals-are the main
drivers of price increases, Conti said.
"Polymers in particular are impacted, as butadiene is up in all regions," the tyre maker said. Demand
outpacing supply, transportation and trucking availability and cost, duties, tariffs and forced produc-
tion outages in offshore chemical-producing countries also are causing stress on prices, it said.
"We are a global company and have a certain level of flexibility within our global sourcing presence
with which to offset cost and risk," Conti said. "However, the cost drivers are affecting all regions to
varying degrees, which limits the market's ability to offset increasing raw material costs."
Conti's continuing research in dandelion rubber promises significant leeway in product formulations,
according to the company.
• V ARIOUS FACTORS IN PLAY
Bill Hyde, senior director, olefins & elastomers, for
global analytics firm IHS Markit, concurred with
Conti that butadiene is the most volatile raw mate-
rial, this year and last. But this shows signs of chang-
ing, he said.
"We have seen (butadiene) prices increase early
this year, driven largely by trends in Asia," Hyde
said. "In North America and Western Europe, the
markets have also tightened, and prices have in-
creased.
Weather had an effect on synthetic rubber prices,
but the dominant factor was trends in Asia, ac-
cording to Hyde.
"The styrene market has been impacted by tariff
discussions in China that have finally resulted in
duties being collected," he said.
Natural rubber is on a divergent price path from SR
and petrochemicals, according to a source who
asked to remain anonymous.
"Chemicals are moving up, and synthetic rubber is
up from what it was," the source said. "But natural
rubber is still truly on the downside trend it's been
on since last year."

We can see the the importance of quality in the sales and the feedback from market. Nowadays, ev-
erything we are are trying to do now is to let customers to take the initiative to come to us in the future,
instead of searching for customers by us. We believe in the strength of the brand name.
If we do not care about the quality, it likes that we know there is a small problem on the foundation
when building the skyscraper, but we continue the building process.
Quality management is used in all areas of a company from the productions to the customer services
. It is an ongoing process, and is important to the success of a company. That's why we care about the
quality and after-sales service very much.
Companies must test the quality control of their products to make sure they are on par with what is ex-
pected. Customers who have purchased products or services from a given company for a period of
time will expect a certain level of quality. That is why value management is a
continual process that must be adhered to on a regular basis.
The idea is that if products or services can continuously be improved upon,
the longer the company who makes those products or services will remain
in business.

5. Last year was another polarizing year for Chi-
na's tyre sector.
The country's tyre production in 2017 in-
creased by 5.4 percent from 2016 to 926 mil-
lion units, a third of the global total. Tyre
makers' production had a 7.1 percent rise to
653 million units, data from China's ministry of
industry and IT also shows.
Radial tyre production climbed 8.5 percent to
613 million units - including 131 million truck
and bus tyres, up 8.2 percent year-on-year,
and 482 million passenger car tyres, up 8.5
percent year on year-while bias tyre produc-
tion dropped 11 .1 percent to 40 million units.
Due to a series of factors, including volatile
feedstock prices, supply surpluses, rising labor
costs and tightening environmental regula-
tion, China's tyre manufacturing costs have
risen above those in south east Asia, south
Asia and eastern Europe and to over 90 per-
cent of those in the U.S., according to an
analysis by Dalian Custom District.
Low capacity utilization rates also were a
common scenario last year. Company profits
in 201 7 declined by 49 .6 percent against the
backdrop of an 11 percent jump in China's
total motor vehicle pare to 310 million units, in-
cluding 23 million trucks with over 3 million
newly registered ones - a record-high in-
crease.
- 05-
C OMPANY SHUTDOWNS
The situation was worse for smaller players.
Last year, 27 tyre companies shut down in the
country with a total bankruptcy auction price
of $184.9 million - some were auctioned
more than once.
Market conditions worsened last year in the
world's largest tyre exporter country as India,
the European Union, the U.S. and Turkey
launched anti-dumping and countervailing
undertakings against China's tyre exports.
In August, India determined China was dump-
ing pneumatic radial tyres and imposed
duties of between $245 per metric ton and
$452 per ton since September.
The EU started its antidumping investigation
on China's truck and bus tyres in August and
expanded it to countervailing duties in Octo-
ber. The process led to the imposition of steep
provisional tariffs on China-based manufac-
turers effective from February 2018, ahead of
a permanent ruling by the year-end.
In September, the United Steelworkers of

America filed for the revocation of an earlier

from China's truck and bus exports, restarting
this trade war. Turkey also announced it was
to continue imposing a 60 percent antidump-
ing tariff on various types of Chinese tyres in
December.
O VERSEAS INVESTMENT
On account of trade friction and rising labor
costs, companies with enough resources
have been setting up manufacturing sites
overseas, especially in the regions backed by
China's Belt & Road Initiative.
A number of the market leaders already have
started up plants, such as Sailun in Vietnam,
and Zhongce, Linglong, Double Coin and
Sentury in Thailand.

The sector bellwethers also have been upping
their efforts in research and development for
technology upgrades, making recent break-
throughs such as Linglong's dandelion rubber
tyre, Shandong Fengyuan Tyre Manufactur-
ing's carbon nanotube tyre, Sailun's high-per-
forming green tyre using EVEC rubber materi-

In 2018, the ranking of the world's most valuable car brands was topped by Toyota. The brand is a sub-
division of the Toyota Motor Company, which was founded in the late 1930s. The Japanese manufac-
turer is one of the largest companies within the global automotive industry. It is active in a variety of
segments, including SUVs and crossovers, trucks and motorcycles. Furthermore, Toyota invests heavily
in the research and development of hybrid electric vehicles, as well as plug-in and full-electric vehi-
cles. In addition to its operations in the automotive manufacturing industry, Toyota is involved in vari-
ous other areas, including robotics and aerospace projects.
Beside Toyota, automotive brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Ford also made it into the list of
the most valuable car brands worldwide. Germany's Mercedes-Benz manufactures luxury and cross-
over automobiles, buses and trucks. In 2017, the car manufacturing subdivision, Merecedes-Benz Cars
had total revenue of around 94.7 billion euros.
In 2018, the scandal-stricken Volkswagen Passenger Car brand climbed back on the tail of the list,
while Tesla made a steady climb up the ranking. Of the Big Three U.S. automakers, General
Motors and Chrysler sell automobiles under a variety of brands, while Ford sells vehicles
under its namesake Ford brand and the Lincoln brand. The Michigan-based com-
pany reported having sold more than 6.6 million Ford and Lincoln vehi-
cles worldwide in 2017. That same year, Ford's revenue amounted to
around 156.8 billion U.S. dollars.

7. The tyre industry has seen big changes in the last decade witnessed by how
the aftermarket is split up, and will see even bigger changes in the future
brought on by new automotive technologies, according to Dave Zielasko,
publisher of Rubber & Plastics News.
e DAVE ZIELASKO
Speaking at the recent Clemson Tyre Industry Conference in Hilton Head,
he said of 209 million replacement passenger tyres shipped in the U.S.
in 2017, 144 million were imported. Thailand was the biggest import-
er of passenger tyres, and tyre imports from Vietnam grew by 50
percent, he said.
Tyre makers, meanwhile, are facing issues of their own, according to Zielasko.
A 25 percent tariff on imported steel is a real threat to U.S. tyre manufacturers, because all tyre-grade
steel is produced abroad, he said.
High raw-materials prices are affecting bottom lines, and the need for a sustainable natural rubber
supply is a crucial part of any tyre maker's business plan, according to Zielasko.
"All the majors are trying to get a steady, sustainable natural rubber supply," he said. This has led them
into strategic partnerships with outside organizations, such as Bridgestone with Versalis and Continen-
tal with GIZ, he said.
The biggest change for tyre makers, however, is autonomous vehicles. General Motors Co. is set to in-
troduce AVs as early as 2019, and global demand for AVs could reach 33 million vehicles by 2040, ac-
cording to Zielasko.
The advent of AVs and autonomous fleets means several possible things, he said, including:
• Fewer individual owners;
• Greater wear and tear on tyres and parts resulting from shared mobility, meaning greater replace-
ment frequency;
• Vehicle miles driven could increase by as many as 3 trillion miles;
• Increasing importance of vehicle telematics, with
data helping predict parts wear and improve fore-
casting.
"The next step in the evolution of the automobile is
where the car becomes more of a software plat-
form supported by electrical and mechanical pro-
cesses," said Zielasko, quoting the Automotive After-
- 09-
market Suppliers Association.
"Cars of the future will transform from a product to a service as they become more connected to
the Internet of Things, providing driverless transportation and shared ownership."
Zielasko cited a recent high-level meeting attended by Pirelli's new CEO Marco Crola that includ-
ed executives from Volkswagen A.G., Audi, Mercedes Benz and Ford of Europe, where they dis-
cussed how the outlook of major tyre and auto makers is changing.
"Mr. Crola said in previous such meetings, they talked about things such as performance, speed,
handling, vehicle design," he said. "In this meeting, the conversation focused on connectivity,
electric vehicles, shared vehicles and autonomous vehicles. The industry is still figuring out how far
along this is."
In the area of AV fleets, Goodyear is working with Tesloop Inc. to provide tyres with wireless sensors
to a fleet of autonomous, connected electric Tesla vehicles, Zielasko said. And Ebay.com is
launching a tyre installation service through its My Garage platform, which is using American Tyre
Distributors lnc.'s TireBuyer.com platform as a tyre seller, he said.

In June 2018, registrations of new
commercial vehicles in the EU
posted the third consecutive month
of growth (+7.3%), with 247,000 units
registered in total. This positive result
was mainly driven by van sales,
which account for almost 85% of the
commercial vehicle sector's
demand. Growth was recorded in
Spain (+9.0%) , Germany (+7.2%) and
France (+3.2%) , while demand fell in
the Italian and UK markets (down
1.3% and 7.7% respectively). Note-
worthy was the strong increase ob-
served in Sweden, where commer-
cial vehicle registrations - mainly
During the first half of 2018 the EU market expanded by 4.7%, counting almost 1.3 million new com-
mercial vehicles. Spain posted the highest growth over this period (+10.9%) , followed by France
(+5.0%) , Germany (+3.7%) and Italy (+2.1 %).
- 13-
N EW LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES (LCV) UP TO 3.5 TONNES
In June 2018, demand for light commercial vehicles posted robust growth (+8.3%) , sustained by very
positive results in the new EU member states (+ 14.9%). In total, 209,364 new vans were registered in the
EU, exceeding for the first time the June 2007 result - reached before the industry was hit by the eco-
nomic crisis. Among the key EU markets, Spain (+ 11 .4%), Germany (+5.7%) and France (+3.7%) did
well, but new LCV registrations declined in the United Kingdom (-5.8%) and in Italy (-3.8%).
From January to June 2018, 1,066,703 new vans were registered across the European Union, up 5.1 %
compared to the same period one year ago. The UK (-2.3%) was the only major market to post a de-
cline, while Spain (+ 11.6%), France (+5.0%) and Germany (+5.0%) have all performed well so far in
2018.
N EW HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES (HCV) OF 16 TONNES AND OVER
June results in the heavy truck segment were 2.3% higher than a year ago, with 27,580 new vehicles
registered. HCV sales increased in Germany (+ 16.3%) and Italy (+ 11 .4%) but declined in the UK
(-21.9%), Spain (-11.6%) and France (-2.1 %).
Six months into the year, demand for heavy trucks has remained positive across the EU, up 3.9% com-
pared to one year ago. Overall, 159,881 new vehicles have been registered so far. Italy (+16.7%),
France (+7.3%), Spain (+5.4%) and Germany (+ 1.6%) positively contributed to the region's growth,
while demand fell in the UK (-11.6%).
N EW MEDIUM AND HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES (MHCV) OVER 3.5 TONNES
In June 2018, new truck registrations increased slightly in the European Union (+2.3%) , counting 34,196
units. The Italian (+ 13.4%) and German (+ 12.9%) markets posted growth last month, although registra-
tions did fall in the UK (-19.2%) , Spain (-6.8%) and France (-2.2%).
Over the first half of the year, EU demand for new trucks went up by 3.4%, counting 195,191 units. Italy
(+ 14.5%), Spain (+6.2%) and France (+5.8%) all performed very well. On the contrary, the United King-
dom (-9.8%) saw its registrations decline compared with the first semester of 2017.
N EW MEDIUM AND HEAVY BUSES & COACHES (MHBC) OVER 3.5 TONNES
June 2018 results showed a decline in the bus and coach segment (-3.4%) after the slight recovery ob-
served last May. There were diverging trends in the five key EU markets, with Italy and France posting
double-digit gains (+44.2% and +22.0% respectively) , while the Spanish (-33.6%) and UK (-21.7%) mar-
kets faced substantial declines.
During the first semester of 2018, EU bus and coach registrations were slightly lower than one year ago
(-0.9%) , counting 20,206 new vehicles. Demand strongly increased in Italy (+ 19.0%), but registrations
fell in the UK (-16.3%) and Germany (-6.1%).

11. TIPS FOR DRIVER: HOW TO
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SKID
STEER TYRE
Source: skidsteers.com
How TO DETERMINE TYRE SIZE
Do you ever get the "Deer in the headlights" look whenever you think about replacing your skid steer
tyres? You look at all the numbers on the sidewall if you can still see them, and find them confusing?
Let me explain to you what all those numbers mean.
- 17 -
There are usually 3 numbers, for example, 27x10.5 -15. The first number is the height The second
number is the section width/ The third number is the Rim (wheel size). In this case of the example
the tyre height is 27", the section width is 10.5'', and the diameter of the rim is 15".
So ok what if there are only 2 numbers, for example, 10 x 16.5.or 12 x 16.5. This is a little trickier. The
last number is always the Rim (wheel) size. In such a case you can estimate the height of the tyre
by multiplying the section width x 2 and adding the rim size. This isn't always accurate but will give
you a good idea of what to expect.
There are other factors to consider when choosing a tyre including; load rating, Ply rating and load
index. These are generally determined by the size and operating weight, and maximum load
weight of your machine along with the application.
Hopefully, this has cleared a few things up regarding tyre sizes and tracks. There is a method to the
numbers. Don't ever hesitate to email us here at info@hanmix.net for information. We are always
happy to give you the best advice available to us.
C HOOSING THE RIGHT SKID STEER TYRE
There are basically two different types of skid steer tyres to consider:
Flat Proof (Solids) , and Pneumatic (air-filled)
What are some things to consider? Well, budget usually comes to mind first. Pneumatic tyres are
usually more affordable. But the most important consideration is your application and the terrain.
Solid Skid Steer Tyres: These tyres do not have inner tubes like a traditional or a standard tyre, Thus
cannot be punctured or are at risk for air leaks. So if you are in the recycling industry, construction
zones, demolition, or waste management, you want to consider solid tyres. These tyres do come in
several styles, and are usually sold as tyres and wheels assembled.
Air-Filled or Pneumatic Skid Steer Tyres: These tyres work best on uneven or
rough terrain, with a variety of tread designs and quality. It also provides a
more comfortable ride. So again your intended use should be consid-
ered. For example, If you are a landscaper and need to violate a cus-
tomer's lawn, you should consider a non-directional style tyre which
is a little more forgiving, and doesn't have the deep chevron style
tread design but has more surface. Or you can also consider
using skid steer mats. Are you a snow contractor then review
the skid steer snow tyre option for your business.
When choosing a pneumatic tyre you will also
want to keep in mind the weight and size of
your machine, with a consideration of
the loads you expect to carry.
