3. Global Tyre Industry
Overview for 2018
Source: Tire Industry Research
2018 was very much a year of two halves, with steady grow-
th in the first half, but sharp declines in the second half, espe-
cilly in consumer tyres.
Taking the year as a whole (12 months to December 31), we
estimate that the total global tyre business grew by 7% in 2018,
compared with the 11% growth seen in 2017. The 7% growth
was split roughly equally between volume and price increases.
Tyre company results for 2018
Global profits increased by around 3% in 2018, but this refle-
cted very different performance in the first half compared to
the second.
First glimpse at global tyre rankings
We’ve analyzed the numbers and come up with some preliminary rankings of the world’s top tyre makers in 2018.
Apollo, like most Indian companies, has a financial year running from April to
March.
For this table we have taken the four quarters from January 2018 to December
2018. Companies with a different financial calendar year are marked in blue.
Of those listed above, Giti and Sailun have not yet reported 2018 data (marked in pink).
Giti has not reported any data on the Singapore Stock exchange (SGX) since the first half of 2017.
We have estimated the annual numbers for Giti for the 2017 financial year, but think that projecting
forward for 2018 would be inadvisable.
This rapid slow-down in global car markets
meant that car makers around the world had
substantially changed their orders for tyres at
short notice. This led to disruption at tyre makers
and especially with respect to their orders for
raw materials in the fourth quarter. This created
significant uncertainty in the upstream markets.
While much of the volatility has now been
resolved, many OE car markets are not expected
to fully recover until the second half of 2019,
leading to continued weakness in many raw
materials prices for the coming six months or so.
01 02
Because of this variation from one half to the
other, 2018 was quite a difficult year. In particular,
a strong slowdown for PCR sales in Latin Ameri-
ca and China and other parts of Asia in the
second half affected profitability and materials
demand. China’s retail passenger vehicle sales in
the whole of 2018 were down nearly 6%
year-over-year. Much of that was concentrated in
the fourth quarter, when sales dropped 17%
year-on-year.
Additionally, European vehicle sales were affect-
ed by the introduction of WLTP for existing
models from September onwards. As a result,
OE demand for tyres dropped sharply in the EU
from September, but had benefited from
pre-buying in the earlier months.
Hankook is steadily climbing the
rankings, rising ahead of Pirelli to
take 6th slot in this, our first view
of the table of bragging rights for
the world’s top tyre makers.
The top 10 can now be character-
ized as the top-4, followed by a
chasing pack of three, followed by
a pack of smaller companies. Sales
revenue required to make the
top-10 is now around USD3.7bil-
lion.
Further down the table, Apollo
jumped two slots, making it clearly
India’s biggest tyre maker, by
revenues.

The OTR Roadmap
For Success
Everyone in the tyre industry, from tyre manufacturers and distributors to independent tyre dealers,
knows that change is happening in the tyre and automotive business as a result of new technology and
evolving consumer preferences. However, no knows for certain where the business is going nor how tyre
dealers should best prepare their operations to keep customers satisfied and returning. But there may be
a roadmap for retail and commercial dealers to follow that could provide insight into what to consider in
preparing for ongoing change.
While farm and off-the-road tyre dealerships don't sell and service nearly as many tyres as passenger, light
truck and medium truck tyre dealers do each year, they regularly work with knowledgeable and discerning
customers who understand and value tyres.
07
Farmers, mining operators and construction companies are well aware of the importance tyres play in their
operations. They know that down time for a piece of equipment caused by a tyre failure is more than just
an inconvenience. It means lost revenue that compounds each day the affected piece of equipment or
machinery is down.
10
They also appreciate how technology and tyre perfor-
mance data can help get the most out of the tyres on
their equipment, including knowing when tyres should
be replaced, before they suffer a failure.
Everyone in the tyre industry, from tyre manufacturers
and distributors to independent tyre dealers, knows
Maximizing tyre longevity and performance are more
critical because of the high cost of these tyres. Farm,
mining and OTR tyres can run into the tens of thou-
sands of dollars depending on the product, so select-
ing proper tyres, acquiring them at a reasonable price
and getting the most out of them is crucial to a com-
pany's bottom line.
This makes the relationship between tyre dealers and
their farm, mine and construction company customers
invaluable.
Tyre company executives interviewed for this special
issue on OTR and farm tyres stressed this and provid-
ed advice that all tyre dealers can use and modify
when dealing with their own customers.
"The key to the future is going to be cost/hour or
cost/ton — and whoever can do this most effectively
will be the winner in the market," said Bruce Besancon,
Yokohama Tyre's vice president of OTR tyres, stressing
the importance of problem solving before issues
occur.
"Dealers should continue elevating their service capa-
bilities and formulating the best ways to service their
end-use customers in the ways their customers require
service and product support," said Shawn Rasey, Con-
tinental Tyre the Americas' director of global business
development and earthmover tyres. He urged dealers
to focus on upgrading the technology in their own op-
erations to make their jobs easier and to improve
demand forecasting.

8. 6 of Russia’s
Most Awesome Off-Road Vehicles
When it comes to 4x4’s in the U.S., it’s
safe to say that Jeep is king. But when you
cross the globe and see what those wacky
Russians have to offer—well, it’s a whole
new world of ridiculous and wonderful
off-road vehicles. These are six of the
favorites.
Sherp
It may not bear the typical resemblance
to any modern 4x4—but hey, this is
Russia. It’s boxy, it’s got big tyres, and
it can pretty much go anywhere and do
anything. The Sherp is powered by a
1.5-liter inline-4 turbo diesel. It only
pumps out 44 horsepower, but no need
to worry, it’s the gearing that really
does the trick in the tough stuff. If
you’re looking to get your hands on
one, it'll only set you back $65,000.
Aton-Impulse Viking 2992
Its name may be a mouthful, but you best believe
that the Aton-Impulse Viking 2992 is a no-nonense
off-roader only Russia could build. It seats seven,
and it looks like something we’d be driving in
some post-apocalyptic society. It was created in
2014, and features a teeny-tiny 82 horsepower
engine to compliment its 3.3 ton curb weight. The
Viking is able to negotiate a 38-degree slope and a
42-degree sideways tilt. It’s those giant tyres and
wide track that keep it grounded to the ground. If
you need a Viking in your life, be prepared to dish
out at least $200,000.
Lada Niva
The Lada Niva may not be as ridiculous or rugged as the
previous entrants, but it’s a respectable set of wheels all
its own. Developed in 1977, the Niva has stood the test
of time, cementing itself as one of the most rugged SUVs
money can buy. Its designers called it “a Renault 5 put
on a Land Rover chassis.” Its been used commercially as
an ambulance, a police car, and even a military vehicle
because of its legendary ruggedness. But arguably its
best use is on the rally stage.
UAZ 452 (Commercial)
Part minivan, part badass
off-roader—the UAZ 452 is one
of the most fun-looking 4x4s
money can buy in Russia. Like a
few other Russian SUVs on this
list, the 452 was developed
mostly for military use. Civil-
ians, though, could opt for a
few different variants, including
a “Farmer" or “Dropside"
which ditches the third row in
place of a covered tarp.
KrAZ 214*
We have to put an asterisk next to this one.
Though awesome and capable and perfect
for this list, the KrAZ 214 is actually a
Ukranian-built 6x4, but used heavily by the
Soviet Union during the war. Developed by
KrAZ in 1956, it was created for “extreme
operations”. Under the hood was a 6.8-li-
ter diesel that gave the 214 a top speed of
55 mph, not that it mattered how fast it
was going when it crashed through
anything and everything
in its path.
1211 12
Source:motor 1.com
UAZ 469
Looking at the UAZ 469, you might see
some parallels with the original Willys
Jeep. That’s understandable, because
like the Willys Jeep, the 469 is a
go-anywhere, do-anything
military-built 4x4 that’s very easy to
love. It was originally developed in
1971 as a vehicle for Soviet and other
European armed forces. It featured a
4-cylinder, 75-horsepower engine, and
continued its usage in the Russian
army until 2011. In 1985, the military
allowed for civilian purchases of these
unique 4x4s. Though, if you’re
looking to buy one today, you might
want to opt for a pre-1985 version.

Russia Posts 2018 Sales up
13% to 1.8m Vehicles
Sales of new passenger cars and LCVs in Russia increased
5.6% in December, while 2018 sales rose to 1.8m vehicles, up
12.8%.
Among the top ten bestselling models so far, all models are
locally produced.
In December, sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles
in Russia increased by 5.6 % compared with December, 2017
or by 9,227 sold units, amounting to 175,240 cars, according
to the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee (AEB AMC).
In 2018, new car and LCV sales increased by 12.8% or 204,854
units in comparison with the previous year. In January-De-
cember, 1,800,591 cars were sold.
"Total market sales in December improved by 5.6% on an
annual basis, closing the year with a 12-month streak of
consecutive growth," said AEB Automobile Manufacturers
Committee chairman, Joerg Schreiber.
"Cumulative sales in 2018 reached 1.801m units, posting a
12.8% plus compared to the prior year. The outlook for 2019
is not so straightforward. Consumer tax increases and a
possible tightening of US sanctions create significant risks
and uncertainties for the market performance especially in
the first quarter of the year.
"Assuming no drastic change in government policy and
support for the automotive sector, market participants how-
ever expect that fundamental market demand should be
robust enough for sales to consolidate and to return to a
growth pattern in the course of the year.
"With this in mind, our 2019 full year prediction for sales of
passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia is a
moderate improvement to 1.87m units, or by 3.6% compared
to the prior year."

level. For a more granular view of exported goods at the four-digit HTS code level, see the section
Searchable List of Russia’s Most Valuable Export Products further down near the bottom of this article.
Russia’s top 10 exports accounted for almost three-quarters (72.3%) of the overall value of its global
shipments.
Cereals was the fastest-growing among the top 10 export categories up 38.9% from 2017 to 2018, led by
improved international sales of wheat and barley.
In second place for improving export sales was Russian iron and steel which was up 24.5%.
Russia’s shipments of copper posted the third-fastest gain via a 14.1% gain in value.
There were two decliners among the top 10 export categories. Gems and precious metals fell -8.6% due
to plummeting gold exports while retreated -1.8%.
Overall Russia generated a $211.2 billion trade surplus during 2018, a 61.3% uptick from the $130.9 billion
surplus one year earlier.
Russia has highly positive net exports in the international trade of crude and refined oils, coal and petro-
leum gases. In turn, these cashflows indicate Russia’s strong competitive advantages under the mineral
fuels including oil category.
Russia’s Top 10
Export Products
Occupying Northern Asia and a large part of Eastern Europe making the Russian Federation the world’s
biggest area by geographic area, Russia shipped US$449.3 billion worth of goods around the globe in 2018.
That dollar amount for Russian exports reflects a -9.7% drop since 2014 but a 25.1% acceleration from 2017
to 2018.
Based on estimates from the Central Intelligence Agency’s World Factbook, Russia’s exported goods plus
services represent 26.2% of total Russian economic output or Gross Domestic Product. That percentage
includes re-exports. The analysis below focuses on exported products only.
From a continental perspective, 54.5% of Russian exports by value were delivered to fellow European
countries while 36.8% were sold to Asian importers. Smaller percentages went to Africa (3.8%), North
America (3.4%) and Latin America (1.2%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean.
Given Russia’s population of 142.1 million people, its total $449.3 billion in 2018 exports translates to
roughly $3,200 for every resident in the vast Eurasian country.
Russia’s unemployment rate was 4.9% as of January 2019 up from 4.7% one year earlier, according to
Trading Economics.

TIRES FROM STORAGE
PROPER STORAGE OF WINTER TIRES
Source: Tire Safety Group
Proper storage of winter tires during the summer months can help extend the service life of tires. Once the
weather warms up and snow has melted from the roadways, it is fun to replace stocky winter tires with
sporty summer tires ready for beach weather. To help guide you through storing your winter tires until next
year, we have surveyed the service bulletins and owner’s manuals of most of the major tire manufacturers
to provide you with a general guide of the tire industry’s best practices for tire storage.
Prior to storing the tires, clean the surface on which
the tires are going to be stored. Make sure the
surface is clear of any grease, gasoline or other
debris that could cause the tire to deteriorate. Also
clean the tires with soap and water to remove brake
Keep the tires stored indoors in a cool area, below
77 degrees, and away from direct sunlight. Tires
should also be stored in an area with low humidity as
humidity can cause condensation to form on the
tires. Tires need to be kept dry during storage. A dry
basement is an acceptable place to temporarily
store tires while they are not in use. While a garage or
a shed may be a convenient place to store a tire,
these spaces often experience drastic changes in
temperature and humidity, which can be detrimental
to the tires you are storing.
If you are not using protective bags to store tires with
lettering or whitewall, make sure the whitewall or
lettering of the tires are facing each other when you
stack them. This will prevent the white areas of the
tire from staining due to contact with the black
rubber of the other tire.
If the tires are being kept on a vehicle, use
blocks and make sure that the tires are kept
properly inflated to the recommended PSI
on the placard inside the driver’s side
door of your vehicle. If the tires will not be
in use for long periods of time, it is best to
take them off of the vehicle Long-term
inactivity can be harmful to tires that have
to carry the weight of a vehicle.
Prior to storing a tire, do not use any
tire dressing. It is not necessary. Tire
compounds are created to resist ozone
cracking and weather checking.
It is best to place each tire in a separate
opaque, airtight plastic bag. Make sure the
tire is dry before you place it in the bag and
remove as much air as possible prior to
sealing the bag. Once the bag is closed
tightly, tape it shut. This creates a mini-at-
mosphere for the tire to help prevent oil
evaporation from the tire compound. While
you may be tempted to use seasonal tire
totes due to the fact that they are easier to
carry and store, these totes are not airtight
and do not prevent the tire from being
exposed to the atmosphere. If you want to
use seasonal tire totes to store your tires,
make sure you first place each tire in its
own separate bag and then place the bag
with the tire into the tire tote.
Make sure that you keep the tires away
from any sources of ozone, such as electric
motors that use contact brushes, furnaces,
sump pumps, etc.
It is important to note that tires
will age no matter what precau-
tions you take and should be
removed from service when they
are six years old from the date of
manufacture. Finally, it is import-
ant to inspect the remaining
tread life of the tire and have a
reputable tire service center place
the tires back on your vehicle.
Tips For Driver:
Keep the tires away from grease, gasoline, or other
solvents that could cause the rubber of the tire to
deteriorate.
