2. Treatment
Treatment of Cervical Factors:
Chronic cervicitis may be treated with antibiotics.
The easiest and most successful treatment is intrauterine
insemination (IUI).
Treatment of Uterine Factors:
The treatment of uterine malformations depends on the
severity of the problem.
Chronic cervical factor of absence of mucus - Intrauterine
insemination
Cervical incompetence - Cerclage
3. Damage/absence of fallopian tubes (ectopic) - In vitro
fertilization
Uterine anomalies can be corrected through operative
hysteroscopy under general anesthesia or conscious
sedation
Endometrial polyps are removed through operative
hysteroscopy
Fibroids should be treated if they are associated with
abnormal uterine bleeding or if they are thought to be the
cause of infertility. Three modalities are used to treat
myomas: medical treatment, surgical treatment, and
embolization.
Treatment of Ovarian Factors:
Clomiphene citrate (Clomid)
Human menopausal gonadotropins
4.
5. Ovulation Inducers
Drug Name Rate of Ovulation Pregnancy
Clomiphene 80% 40%
HMG 90% 70-80%
Bromocriptine 90% 70-80%
GnRH 80% 50-80%
Ovarian drilling 70-80% 45-60%
6. Assisted reproductive technology
Therapy
Requires
Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation
Retrieval of oocytes
In vitro fertilization and embryo transfer
Procedures
IVF-ET (In Vitro fertilization-embryo transfer)
GIFT (Gamete intra-fallopian transfer)
ZIFT (Zygote intra-fallopian transfer)
ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection)
12. B. GIFT & ZIFT:
Gamete intrafallopian transfer – use of a laparoscope to
guide the transfer of unfertilized eggs and sperm into
the fallopian tubes
Zygote intrafallopian transfer – fertilizing the eggs in
the laboratory and using a laparoscope to guide the
transfer of the zygotes into the fallopian tubes
C. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
D. Surrogacy : a woman, other than the genetic mother
agrees to become pregnant and carry the fetus to full
term
13. E. Artificial insemination:
use of sperm from a donor or partner to fertilize an egg,
sperm collected and placed in vagina or uterus
IUI: intrauterine insemination, use a catheter to directly
place sperm into the uterine cavity
