Offering Details
What exactly is being offered?

What is being offered by Lenovo?
SAP HANA in-memory databases need some sort of fast storage to persist data.
Until 2016, Lenovo x86 had a single choice of file systems for scale-out clusters:
IBM GPFS.
The new offering in a nutshell:
Lenovo sells an engineered storage solution for SAP HANA based on SES
It comprises:
1) Hardware (server, storage, network)
2) SUSE Enterprise Storage license
3) Detailed cook book how to set up the stack including all config files (ceph.conf and
others)
 Lenovo guarantees required SAP HANA performance with each customer setup.

When to offer?
• Any MSP, hosting company, cloud provider
• Any on-prem cloud environment
• Any scale-out green-field SAP HANA implementation
– Remember: SDS HW can get server discounting…
• Existing SAP HANA customers:
– When significantly expanding their SAP HANA install base
– When they show activities to migrate to SDS
– When they are unhappy with their existing storage vendor, including GPFS

With whom should you talk about what?
• C-level / Senior Management
– Discuss general storage strategy within the company (single vendor? FC? What about storage
strategy for hyperconverged systems?)
– Leverage general SDS and Open Source benefits
• IT decision makers
– Leverage benefits of Open Source products
– Talk about no vendor lock-in
– Position SES with storage features (eg snapshot, replication) as cheaper more flexible vs
traditional enterprise storage (see SDS study on references slide)
– Mention that new storage features can/will easily be introduced with SES updates
– Mention that SDS equipment can always be repurposed

– Position SUSE as the leading SDS vendor
– Mention industry standard APIs and protocols
– Talk about easy integration into existing frameworks, but SES also brings its own: openATTIC

Customer benefit – why should someone buy it?
• Best TCO (see study in Resource section)
• Clients work with proven XFS – no new file system like GPFS
• Flexible, future proven investment
– No dead-end, roadmap exists, new features being added free-of-charge
– Ready to integrate with other Open Source data lakes (Hbase, Cassandra, etc)
– Migration off of existing SANs, loosen dependency on existing SAN vendor
– No vendor lock-in
• No vendor lock-in
– Clients are getting sensitive to lock-in situations (not yet so much in SDS/HC but the trend
can be seen with other products that are past their hype cycle)
– Yes, we do want to sell Lenovo HW but:
- we want to win clients by being their trusted data center partner
- we want to win by having the best solution, not by having clients locked-in
- we believe in long-term partnerships with clients

Why Ceph as an engineered solution?
• SDS cost savings & flexibility:
– Avoid large markup by storage vendor on hardware
– Share hardware resources between storage and application; increases utilization; get more
work out of less hardware
– More customer flexibility in choosing the best hardware parts for their needs
• SDS disadvantages, when done by yourself:
– Customer is responsible for selecting and installing hardware; may not provision adequately
for the needs of the software
 Lenovo Solution Architecture & Support
– Customer is responsible to debug problems and then work with server, storage, OS, or
networking vendor
 single point of contact for support
– Storage vendor has to be prepared to support their software running on almost any
reasonable hardware
 SUSE and Lenovo have defined a portfolio using few building blocks only

Comparison with other technologies

A very brief look at the SAP HANA storage market
• All major HANA HW players use FibreChannel and XFS
– well, except for Lenovo: Lenovo uses IBM GPFS and local storage
• A few additional offerings:
– Cisco promotes MapR but they only use it with NFS export! … so why do MapR at all?
– IBM POWER uses XFS and allows GPFS only when customer takes over architecture
– Several OCFS2 architectures on the TDI list …
• Few proprietary SDS products on the SAP HANA TDI List
– all of them use conventional FibreChannel connectivity (DataCore, Nimble, ..)
– No solution support, ie customer is always responsible for architecture and support
coordination
