2. What is basic science?
Basic sciences are defined as the scientific disciplines of mathematics, physics,
chemistry, and biology. They are called basic sciences because they provide a
fundamental understanding of natural phenomena and the processes.
What is sustainable development?
It was first defined in the Brundtland report of 1987.
It is defined as development that meets the needs of present generation without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet there own needs.
PILLARS OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
• Environmental pollution
• Large scale exploitation
of Natural Resources
• More dependence on
conventional fossil fuels
• Energy Crisis
• Water Crisis
• Loss of habitat
NEED OF SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
4. ROLE OF BASIC SCIENCE IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
UNGA has approved 2022 as international year of basic sciences for
sustainable development.
5. INDIA’S PROSPECTS ON SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
• International solar alliance: Aim is to bring
together group of nations to use solar energy for
sustainable development.
• One sun, one world, one grid: It proposes to
provide energy to about 140 countries through
common grid of solar power.
• Commitment at COP26-Glasgow, UK:
PANCHMARIT BY PM MODI
1) Net zero emission by 2070
2) To reduce emissions by 45% by 2030,
3) Increasing Renewable energy component to
50% by 2030
4) Reducing Carbon emission by 1 billion tonnes
till 2030
5) Increasing Non-Fossil fuel energy to 500GW
(Giga watt) by 2030

6. CONCLUSION
• From all these discussions it is evident that Basic Science is
playing major role in our effort towards sustainable
development by eliminating the barriers and unfolding new
opportunities.
