2. What is Power
BI?
• Power BI is a collection of software services, apps, and connectors
that work together to turn your unrelated sources of data
• Use to turn your unrelated sources of data into coherent, visually
immersive, and interactive insights.
3. The parts of
Power BI
• A Windows desktop application called Power BI Desktop.
• An online software as a service (SaaS) service called the Power BI
service.
• Power BI Mobile apps for Windows, iOS, and Android devices.
4. The flow of work
in Power BI
• One common workflow in Power BI begins by connecting to
data sources in Power BI Desktop and building a report.
• Publish that report from Power BI Desktop to the Power BI
service
• Share it so business users in the Power BI service and on mobile
devices can view and interact with the report

Power BI Desktop

6. Let's take a closer look at
some of the elements
found in Data view
• Data view icon. Select this icon to enter
Data view.
• Data Grid. This area shows the selected
table and all columns and rows in it.
Columns hidden from the Report view are
greyed out. You can right-click on a column
for options.
• Formula bar. Enter Data Analysis
Expression (DAX) formulas for Measures
and Calculated columns.
• Search. Search for a table or column in
your model.
• Fields list. Select a table or column to
view in the data grid.
7. On-premises data
gateway
• The on-premises data gateway
acts as a bridge to provide quick
and secure data transfer between
on-premises data (data that isn't
in the cloud) and several
Microsoft cloud services.
• These cloud services include
Power BI, PowerApps, Power
Automate, Azure Analysis
Services, and Azure Logic Apps.
8. Types of Gateways
• On-premises data gateway: Allows multiple users to connect
to multiple on-premises data sources. With a single gateway
installation, you can use an on-premises data gateway with all
supported services.
• On-premises data gateway (personal mode): Allows one user
to connect to sources and can’t be shared with others. An on-
premises data gateway (personal mode) can only be used with
Power BI.
• Virtual network data gateway: Allows multiple users to
connect to multiple data sources that are secured by virtual
networks. No installation is required because it's a Microsoft
managed service.
9. Power
Query Editor
1. In the ribbon, many buttons
are now active to interact with
the data in the query.
2. In the left pane, queries are
listed and available for
selection, viewing, and
shaping.
3. In the center pane, data from
the selected query is displayed
and available for shaping.
4. The Query Settings pane
appears, listing the query's
properties and applied steps.
10. DAX is a collection of functions,
operators, and constants that can be
used in a formula, or expression, to
calculate and return one or more
values.
A. The measure name, Total
Sales.
B. The equals sign operator (=),
which indicates the beginning
of the formula. When
calculated, it will return a
result.
C. The DAX function SUM,
which adds up all of the
numbers in the
Sales[SalesAmount] column.
You’ll learn more about
functions later.
D. Parenthesis (), which
surround an expression that
contains one or more
arguments. Most functions
require at least one argument.
An argument passes a value to
a function.
E. The referenced table, Sales.
F. The referenced column,
[SalesAmount], in the Sales
table. With this argument, the
SUM function knows on which
column to aggregate a SUM.
What is
DAX?
11. Determine Report
Types
Audience needs can be met by one, or
possibly a combination, of four report
types:
• Dashboard
• Analytical
• Operational
• Educational
12. Dashboard
• The primary goal of a dashboard is to
interpret the story as quickly as possible.
• User interactions are limited by insights that
are highly curated toward the audience.
• Report visuals are focused, self-explanatory,
and clearly labeled.
• A dashboard directly communicates the
meaning behind the data to minimize
misinterpretation or confusion.
• A good example of a dashboard is an
executive dashboard, which often presents
high-level metrics that are displayed on a
single page.
