Image processing is a method to enhance images or extract useful information from them. It involves importing an image, analyzing and manipulating it, and outputting either an altered image or report based on the analysis. There are two types of image processing - analogue, which uses hard copies like prints, and digital, which uses computers to manipulate digital images by undergoing pre-processing, enhancement, and display or information extraction. This lecture will define key terms like image and digital image, discuss sources of digital images, cover the continuum from image processing to computer vision, and explain image acquisition and different sensor types.
