Blood Donation presntn by ME.ppt
1.
2. Blood is a bodily fluid in animals that delivers
necessary substances such
as nutrients and oxygen to the cells and
transports metabolic waste products away from
those same cells
Blood is considered as river of life, fluid of life,
fluid of growth, fluid of health.
3. 1.Supply of oxygen to tissues (bound
to hemoglobin, which is carried in red cells)
2.Supply of nutrients such as glucose, amino
acids, and fatty acids .
4. 3.Removal of waste such as carbon
dioxide, urea, and lactic acid
4.Immunological functions, including circulation
of white blood cells, and detection of foreign
material by antibodies
5.Coagulation, the response to a broken blood
vessel, the conversion of blood from a liquid to a
semi-solid gel to stop bleeding.
5. 6.Messenger functions, including the transport
of hormones.
7.Regulation of body pH
8.Regulation of core body temperature.
6.
7. 4.5 million Indians lives are
saved by blood transfusions each
year
Blood is always needed for,
accident victims
cancer patients

Pregnancy related problems
surgery patients
Pre-mature, pre term babies
and many others…….
Indication of blood donation
8. Every year we require about 15000 units of
blood, out of which only 11000 units of
blood we manage to get from different VBD
Camps.
Every two seconds someone needs blood
More than 50 units of blood donations are
needed every day.
9. Life span of a whole blood is 35days. Then it
must be disposed of. That means we need to
constantly replenish the blood so it is there
when someone needs it.
One cannot make blood, it is a gift, we all
have inside of us to give to those who are
injured, sick, or in need. Those are the best
reasons to donate blood.
Not everyone can save a life. But you have
an opportunity to. Don't waste it.
10. A person has 4.5 to 5.5 Lt of blood in their
body.
A person can donate blood every 90 days (3
months).
Body recovers the Blood very quickly:
11. There are four types of transfusable
products that can be derived from blood:
PRBC
Platelets
FFP and
Cryoprecipitate.
Typically, two or three of these are produced
from a unit of donated whole blood – hence
each donation can help save up to three
lives.
12. Healthy bone marrow makes a constant supply of
red cells, plasma and platelets. The body will
replenish the elements given during a blood
donation – some in a matter of hours and others
in a matter of weeks.
13. The number one reason donors say they give
blood is because they "want to help others”
Two most common reasons cited by people
who don't give blood are: "Never thought
about it" and "I don't like needles."
If you began donating blood at age 18 and
donated every 90 days until you reached 60,
you would have donated 58.8 Lt of
blood,(168 times!) potentially helping save
more than 500 lives!
14. Safety of Blood Donor & Blood Recipient
(patient) because “Safe Blood” gives life,
“Unsafe blood” gives infections
To ensure “Blood Safety”,
Strict “Donor Screening” at the Camp
“Testing” of collected blood to WHO specified
standards
Strict “cross-matching” of blood samples to
ensure safe transfusion to patient
15. • It is quick and safe.
• It doesn’t hurt.
• It saves 3 to 4 lives.
• Blood is taken ONLY from Voluntary Donors
• Using sterile, disposable blood bags &
instruments
• Donated Blood is tested and separated into
components benefiting 3-4 patients
• It is safe to donate every 3 months
16. Safe Donor selection involves –
1. Identification of low risk populations
