This are my works till 2016, as an architect working professional and student, along with my varying interests from doodling, photography, fashion and design.
3. This portfolio aims in showcasing my passion overthe past fewyears, growth and widening perspective
on design, love for art and design as such, irrespective of its categories. Hence I would be adding a
few unnumbered works in between which completes my story in this period to recollect my way so far.

My final year B Arch design thesis
was NIRDESH, National Institute
for Research and Development
in Defence Shipbuilding, which
was a live project at Chaliyam
in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. The
researches n data were collected
over the span of four months and
design got four months, from site
study, concept development to the
design output.
Being a pioneer project several live and literature
case studies where required to come up with the area
statements. My seminar ‘Passive techniques in office
building design for warm humid climate’ helped a lot
in developing an environmentally conscious concept
design. The paper summarized the requirement of passive
techniques, growing energy demand in office buildings,
suitability of passive techniques in warm humid climate
and also the advantages of various passive cooling
options in office buildings.

LAYOUT, ACCESS AND CIRCULATION
The layout is arranged to avail the wind and
view from the sea to all the main buildings.
The two separate entities, the Institute and the
Museum are facilitated with separate entries as
a functional requirement.
INDIVIDUAL FACILITIES LAYOUT
Buildings in the site are oriented along the
optimum orientations which are EW axis or
NW- SE axis. Narrow building width and central
courtyards are provided for enhancing passive
cooling.
ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY DESIGN
Sun shading breathing walls, roof gardens and
vertical gardens are given for enhancing passive
cooling. A storm water wetland is proposed onsite
for recycling water to be used for gardening.

PLAN- RESEARCH PARK
NOTE |
All dimensions are in meters
The drawing is not to scale.
There are various buildings in the
institute namely Research park, Design
park, Training park, Administration
block, housing and ancillary facilities.
In the research park, a central
courtyard is provided where researchers
from different departments interact
and it diverges into individual
departments with courtyards and
informal interaction space within.

Best part of the museum
is the constraints, the land
regulations making it possible
to utilize the unbuildable area
for creating a ramp to the top
floor. The vertical circulation
within the building is from top
floor to ground floor, creating
the feeling of going deeper
into the depths of the sea.

A class assignment done in two weeks,
the project was to design temporary
shelter home modules and stack
them inside an auditorium providing
maximum convenience for living. It was
a fun project and ice breaker after our
internships.
The modules had to be sturdy and
should be able to dismantle easily,
the fun was in designing each module
with minimal variations for easy mass
production purpose, assemble them and
create a physical working model with
the inbuilt furniture and venestrations.

22. This Urban design project was a team
work done in four months. Thorough
site study and analysis were carried out
for a proposal of Urban compaction at
Meenchanda, a sub-urb of Kozhikode
city. The design approach was from the
site study, zonal plan and vision plan
were developed and the standards were
developed from these studies.

ZONAL PLAN
I was more interested in the urban
environment details like signages,
street lights, street furnitures and urban
landscapes through the project. The
modified project, done bya four member
team including me was one among
the five shortlisted for the University of
Westminster( UoW) Trophy in NASA, a
national Architectural Competition.

27. VAERU- A DESIGN PORTFOLIO | 27
The first work which felt like a real design deal,
two architects and a 3D visualiser, we had one
week to design and present all the five lounges
interior designs for Cochin International Airport to
the client. Shown here is the VVIP lounge design.
The concept was to let the user enjoy a small piece
of Kerala, beautiful, classy yet subtle, colors and
forms derived from Mohiniyattom- traditional
dance form of Kerala.
I am of the opinion form and function flows hand
in hand, and without constraints I cannot find
meaning in design, here time was the major con-
straint taking us down by throat. But it was a re-
freshing experience to work on design with another
architect, a lot of brainstorming led to the concept
and from there we worked on the elements.
It was a fulfilling experience when most of the
designs got client approval on the first go.

The option I personally
liked for the ceiling design
was the white ceiling with
wooden bands for the
brightness it provided in the
room but client prefered
the traditional full wooden
style. A few refinements
were done on the details
for execution from the
approval stage.

This was the first project I
handled whole by myself from
conceptualization to tendering.
Having grown up with a mom in love
with gardening it didn’t take a while
to take the project to my heart.
The client was Kannur International
Airport Ltd. Frequent traveling for
client meetings, getting held up
at site for weeks and the frequent
design changes due to varying on
site factors and budget constraints,
it took me over six months to reach
the tendering stage. I was extremely
lucky for having a senior Landscape
Architect Dr. Benjamin P V as my
mentor for the project.

Kannur district in Kerala is the land
of an indegenous art form called the
‘Theyyam’. The Airport being located
in Kannur had interior concepts
derived from the Theyyam. Several
mood boards and concept boards
along with detailed site study was
required to reach the approved
design.

This is a self-taken up project while still
working with Kitco, when I decided to fuel
my love for textile design and sustainable
upcycling. With the beautiful rain pouring
outside and my recently broken umbrella
lying around, I decided to make a raincoat
using the umbrella textiles. I used two of
my old umbrellas and an old jacket to be
upcycled into the raincoat.
The process involved minimal stitching
and alterations to the existing fabrics.
Embellishments were done with mosaic tiles,
which were discarded samples from the
office.

52. 52 | BOOK COVER DESIGN- A HANDMADE PROJECT, 2016
I have always wanted to gift
friends something handmade,
it feels like gifting a part of
me. With the cartridge paper
lying around, I decided to
make A6 size sketch books as
gifts. Though precision does
not come without a lot of
time investment I decided to
make the books on my own.
Making the cover was the fun
part. Left-over canvas pieces
were used on which mixed
media art was done.
