2. Theme
 Definition:
In a story, it’s the underlining message or “big idea”

3. What questions does it answer?
 What is the point the author is trying to get across?
 Is it universal?
 Is it cultural?
 Is it just 1 theme in a story? (no)

4. Why is it important?
 If a story, movie, or t.v. show doesn’t have a theme, it would be boring.
 There would be no problem to solve.
 It would be shallow.
 Theme makes it meaningful and lasting.

5. How does a writer develop theme?
 It depends on what the writer believes about life.
 The writer’s morals show in their work.

6. Most common themes
 Divinity/ faith
 Crime does not pay
 Overcoming adversity (obstacles)
 Friendship and sacrifice
 Importance of family
 Power
 Coming of age
 Yin and yang
 Love
 Death (as a part of the life cycle)
 Basic human needs
 Communication
 Desire to escape
 Facing reality
