2. Founded
• Russia was founded sometime in the early 800’s.
• The most important city in Russia, Novgorod, was founded in 862 by
the Viking chief Rurik.
• From here on, Russia grew.
3. The year 957
• In 957, Princess Olga, member of the Kievan nobility, visited and and
converted the civilization to Christianity.
• She then governed Kiev until her son was old enough to rule.
4. The year 980
• Vladimir, Princess Olga’s grandson, came to throne.
• Vladimir came after Princess Olga’s son, who resisted Christianity.
• But, Vladimir converted the empire to Christianity.
• Vladimir imported teachers for faith for the people.
5. The year 1019
• In this year, Vladimir's son, Yaroslav the Wise, came to throne.
• Yaroslav lead Kiev to great glory.
• Yaroslav built the first ever library.
• Yaroslav also dealt with crimes against property.
• Yaroslav died in 1054.
• After he died, the Kievan empire started to decline.
6. 1200’s
• In the middle 1200’s, the Mongols slashed their way into Russia.
• The Mongols were forced to move out so they invaded Russia.
• The Mongols came in killing and burning. This gave the Mongols their
scary reputation.
• Soon, Russia was under Mongol rule.
7. 1156
• The city of Moscow was founded in the 1100’s, but by 1156, it was a
powerful city.
• Moscow was a crude village protected by a log wall.
• Moscow was located by three major rivers; the Volga, Dnieper, and
Don.
8. 1320’s
• Prince Ivan I of Moscow earned gratitude of the Mongols and tried to
put a stop to Mongol rule.
• The Mongols then made Ivan a tax collector.
• Ivan was known to be the most powerful of all Russian princes.
• He was given the nickname “Ivan Moneybag.”
9. 1480
• In 1480, Ivan I broke away from Mongol rule.
• Russian and Mongol armies fought. But it was a bloodless fight.
• Both armies stared at each other in a standoff.
• After this, Russia was free from Mongol rule.
