Thomas Jefferson was a Founding Father who authored the Declaration of Independence and served as the third President of the United States. As President, he oversaw the Louisiana Purchase and funded the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Later in life, he founded the University of Virginia and his personal library became the basis for the Library of Congress.
