• 1)Conversion of raw material into finished goods with the use of some
operation is defined as production
• 2)Production is defined as “the step by step conversion of one form of material
into another form through some process to create or enhance the utility of the
product to the user
• 3)The word production is equally used for providing services to people like
bank,hotels,educational institutions,theater,travels and tourism etc
• 4)It is the process through which goods or services are created by performing a
set of operation on raw material
Introduction to production
4. Production System
• A system is a group of several units joined together to achieve a common
goal. Each system has three common element and they are input, processing
and output.
• The input to a system can be in the form of ‘4m’ i.e Men,material, money and
machines
• The input are processed by a service of operation in a predetermined
sequence.
• The output by a system is either finished goods or services

5. Factors of production
• The various factors of production are explained below
• 1)Land
• 2)Labour
• 3)Capital
• 4) Entrepreneur

6. Introduction to process engineering
• Process engineering also sometimes called as process planning is a system or a
process responsible for the conversion of raw material into finished products
by the most economical way within the limits of design specification.
• It can be defined as the systematic determination of the processes by which a
product is to be manufactured economically and competitively
• The process planning consist of activities like determining sequence of
operation to be performed, selecting the proper machines, specifying tools, jigs
and fixture, specifying the material to be used, giving the details like speed, feed
and depth of cut, specifying the inspection stages etc

7. Function of process engineering
• To determine the basic manufacturing process
• To determine the sequence of operation
• To determine the equipments and tooling required
• To originate the orders for the process revision if necessary

8. Information required for process engineering
• 1.Engineering drawing of the component
• 2.Knowledge of manufacturing processes
• 3.Knowledge of various tooling and fixtures
• 4.Resource available in the factory
• 5.Relative costs of various processes ,tooling and raw material
• 6.Ability to do computation on machining time and cost
• 7.Knowledge to use reference books, such as machinabilty data handbook
