1. What is the origin of the holiday known as Easter?
Easter is the day Jesus returns to earth
2. How do some people here in the U.S celebrate Easter? (secular and religious)
Have a big dinner together, attend church. They also hide and dye easter eggs and let
the children go find them.
3. What do you know about how it is celebrated in Spain?
I know nothing about how Spain celebrates Easter.

Holy Week
5. When is it?
It is celebrated throughout the week leading up to easter
6. Where are the processions going and why?
The processions go from their home church to the Cathedral of Seville and then back.
7. What are brotherhoods and what is their purpose?
Religious groups that prepare for religious holidays. They do charitable work and many
activities. Some brotherhoods have their own chapel they attend. Unfortunately some
brotherhoods do not allow women to become part of one.
8. What happens during Semana Santa?
-palm sunday: representing the moment they are giving jesus to the cross
-Monday of holy week
-Tuesday of holy week
-Wednesday of holy week
-Maundy Thursday
-Good Friday
All during this week they are religious meetings,ceremonies and activities giving praise
to jesus returning.
9. Who are Nazarenos and how are they dressed?
People that march through during the processions and pass out candy.
10. What is at the beginning of the processions? In the middle?
-Great Cross (opens the way)
-Large group of people usually barefoot, carrying large wax candles
-Group of alter boys
-The paso
-musical bands
-people carrying wooden crosses
11. What is a Paso?
This is the center of each procession. An image or images set on top of a moving piece
of floating wood.

12. What are 3 possible pasos? How old are some of them?
-An image of Christ
-An image of the Virgin Mary
-flowers and fabric
Some of these paso are from the 16th century.
13. Who are costaleros and what do they do?
The costaleros are a goup of men that support the beams with their shoulders and neck.
14. What is the traditional dress of women for this? for men?
The women wear all black with very distinctive headress. The men dress nicely with
traditional, eye catching headresses.
15. How do people behave as the processions go past?
They are very quiet and respectful every now and then you will hear a cheer. During
bands that are playing its appropriate to participate but people know when its time to
silently watch

I think the people of spain have really interesting
culture. It is a lot different than ourʼs but its special to
them and they really get into it and i like that. They have so much rich culture and
respect for their past and future and I admire that.
