1. What is the origin of the holiday known as Easter?
It is from the Christian. It is to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus.
2. How do some people here in the U.S celebrate Easter? (secular and religious)
Some people celebrate Easter with an Easter egg hunts and eat a big easter diner and
some people also go to church.
3. What do you know about how it is celebrated in Spain?
Well I can infer since Spain is or was catholic that they would have a lot of masses but
besides from that I do not know much.

4. What does Semana Santa mean?
Semana Santa means holy week.
5. When is it?
The week leading up to Easter. Which is the week right before spanish.
6. Where are the processions going and why?
To the Cathedral to represent the walk that Jesus took to his death.
7. What are brotherhoods and what is their purpose?
It is a group of Baptist people who get together and do a lot of community work. There
purpose is to help the community.
8. What happens during Semana Santa?
During Semana Santa there is the processions of the brotherhoods, known as estación
de penitencia, from their home church to the Cathedral and back.
9. Who are Nazarenos and how are they dressed?
The Nazarenos are a group of Brotherhood that during the parade are completely
silence. They dress in blue and have a pointed hood called the Capirote and they hold
long wax candles and they walk barefooted.
10. What is at the beginning of the processions? In the middle?
The great cross is carried at the beginning and in the middle is the paso.
11. What is a Paso?
A Paso is an image or sets of images that are put on floats.

Three possible pasos are the sculpted scene of the passion, allegorical scene, an
image of Christ and an image of the Virgin Mary.
13. Who are costaleros and what do they do?
Is a team of men who have a headdress march with the Pasos.
14. What is the traditional dress of women for this? for men?
The traditional dress of the women is a La Mantilla which is worn on Maundy Thursday
and Good Friday. It consists of the lace mantle, stiffened by shell or another material
and a black dress mid leg and they wear black shoes.The women must hold and show a
rosary. The men dress in a dark suit, black necktie and shoes.
15. How do people behave as the processions go past?
They can acted normal until the Pasos go by. When the pasos go by they must be
silence then afterwards they are allowed to clap.

These pictures made me feel that this is a very powerful event. Since I am catholic it
was so powerful to see these images of what I have heard all my life and have them me
so large. Another thing that left an impression on me was the large amount of people
that gather for this event which fills my heat with joy knowing others celebrate these
things.

Cascarones are confetti filled eggs.
18. In which countries are they played with?
They are played with in the Countries of Mexico, Spain and in the Southwest of the
Untied States.
19. How are you to break them?
You break the eggs over a persons head but not on their heads.
20. Why do you break them?
You break them to give them good fortune.
