- 1. Experiential Evidence on Women’s Collectivization and Food & Nutrition Security Ashi Kathuria and Anand Kothari Gender-Just Food and Nutrition Security in India August 29, 2016
- 2. Background and Context Undernutirion in India is very high, with over 38% children being stunted. Bihar has much higher rates of undernutrition (48.3% of children under age 5 years are stunted and 43.9% are underweight (NFHS – 4). Chilhood undernutrition affects cognitive ability & schooling, increases susceptibility to disease, reduced life time earnings. Undernutrition is a multi-sector problem, and the strategies to fight it, must be multisectoral.
- 3. Using the platform of women's self-help groups to improve nutrition outcomes: a pilot The World Bank supported JEEViKA program implemented by the Govt. of Bihar’s Bihar Rural Livelihoods Promotion Society institutes and supports women’s self help groups and their federations at scale. A community-driven multsectoral approach to promote women’s participation, increase the utilization of public services (ICDS, Health, Sanitation, and Agriculture) and adopt positive feeding, caring, and WASH practices. Pilot in Saharsa district Two intervention components Behaviour Change Communication Convergence and Coordination Generating evidence with a randomized impact evaluation
- 4. Feasibility Study of the IE provides experiential evidence Feasibility study conducted over a year with 413 women’s SHGs and their 29 Village across 3 gram panchayats of Saur Bazaar block, Saharsa, Bihar. Primary objective to test and validate the feasibility of the multisectoral convergence model, as well as incorporate the views and opinions of stakeholders in the community, and project staff.

Key Findings from the feasibility phase of the Impact Evaluation (related to food & nutrition security and women’s empowerment) Women’s groups increase utilization of interventions to increase food security Increased collective procurement of food grains during the lean season, just before harvest. Women can play an active role in promoting kitchen gardens that can help ensure diet diversity. Women interested in taking on community work roles Significant increase in capacity, with regular training and follow up support.
- 6. Policy Implications The SHG platform is suitable to deliver food and nutrition security interventions. Women’s collectives provide a good opportunity to integrate food and nutrition security interventions along with micro finance and livelihoods interventions Continued strengthening of women’s collectives should be encouraged and is essential.
