2. WHAT IS BOXER ENGINE?
Boxer engine are so named
because of their horizontally
opposed piston they're also called
flat engine or contra engine .
Pistons fire they move in and out
together much like a boxer gloves.
3. Introduction
• The first flat engine was built in 1897 by Karl Benz. Flat engines have
been used in various aviation, motorcycle and automobile
application.
• They are powerful ,efficient and loud.
• Only manufactured commerically in Japan and Gremany.
4. difference between boxer engine and flat engine
• Boxer engine have one crank
journal for every piston where as
flat v engine have one crank
journal for every two piston.
• in flat engine opposing piston on
the flat feet share a crank
journal and move in
reciprocating harmony.
• the advantage of boxer engine
over flat v engine is that have
cheaper crank journal and less
engine vibration .
5. Problem with other engine
• tyipcal v shape engine
alternating piston moved in
mirrored angle slightly less than
90 degrees .Cylinders are slightly
off from each other during the
four stroke engine cycle .
• inline engine are vertical engine.
• problem with inline engine and
v shape engine are primary and
secondary forces which causes
vibration and stability dispute .
6. Advantages of boxer engine
• boxer don't have those problem because the pistons are pointed
away each other counteracting primary and secondary forces .
• They are more stable and lower center of gravity. this lead to better
handling and reduces body roll.
• the postive side of low lying engine is that there is more room above
the engine that allow cold air intake .
7. Advantages of boxer engine
• Got good “response behaviour”
because of variable turbo
turbine geometry which adjust
the blades and change the flow
of exhaust which hits the output
shaft it means it can produce it
means it can produce a lot
charge early with low exhaust
volume .
8. Advantage of boxer engine
• Wheel distribution : the engine
transmission pushes down
creating mechanical grip this is
the reason why porcshe can
accelerate out of turn simply
because it put much pressure on
rear axle .
• Unique firing order 1-3-4-2.
9. Limitation of boxer engine
• However unbalanced movement caused by a reciprocating torque are
unavoidable in boxer engine with less than six cylinder. These
unbalanced moments are also called rocking couple.
• More complex ,have wide proflie and more parts are require.
• Louder because of the valve clatter from the engine compartment.
