Evaluation question 2
1. How effective is the combination of your main products and
ancillary texts?
2. I personally feel like my main product and my ancillary
texts work together very well to create a professional
looking regional magazine. They all work well together
because for one, I kept a similar house-style throughout.
My colours aren’t all the same throughout my texts, but
they come from the same house colour (pink) and that is
why I think they go so well together. I deliberately used
colours from this house colour because when I was looking
at existing regional magazines in fashion, they follow the
same conventions. They usually have a variety of different
colours, but from the same house colour. I chose the
colour pink before I designed my main task and ancillary
texts so that I could incorporate everything around that
colour. For example, the clothes I dressed my model’s in all
contain pinks and reds, which again, helps maintain the
house-style of my magazine.
HOUSE-STYLE
Here you can see I have
incorporated a similar type of
pink as the colour of my
cover lines, to match the
colour of my models’ jumper.
On my website, I have used
another shade of pink similar
to the ones on my magazine
to maintain the same house-
style.
Again, I have matched the
colours on my website to the
clothes my model’s are
wearing to ensure it looks
professional.
I ensured that the make-up
on my model also matched
the house-style of my
magazine to give it that extra
professionalism. I also gave
her a plan smoked out eye
so that it fits perfectly with
the pink on my magazine.
Here I have compared my magazine front
cover and my website together to show
how I’ve kept the same house-style
throughout the production of my tasks.
3. HOUSE-STYLEHere I have done exactly the same with my billboard and contents
page as I did on the previous slide. As you can see, there are quite
a few differences between my billboard ancillary and my contents
page main task through the colours I have used, which appears to
defeat the object of maintaining my house-style. However, I did try
and incorporate a pink onto my billboard but it simply did not go
with the image I used. So to fix this problem, I did do a few things
to allow it to fit into my house-style. For one, I used the same
model that’s on my contents page as the model for my billboard so
that anyone who reads my magazine will be able to clearly identify
the billboard with just one glance. The coat the model’s wearing on
my contents page is one of the main focal points of the image, so
with my billboard I made another fashion item the focal of that
image so that you can clearly identify that it’s a fashion magazine. I
also used autumn/winter clothes as my main focal point since it’s
an autumn edition.
The colour scheme does have
its differences as one’s pink/red
whereas the billboard is a purple
grey colour. However, I matched
the text colour on the billboard
with the model’s jumper which
has been seen worn throughout
my magazine and website. The
colour of the jumper also has
speckles of pink in it so I’ve still
tried to match them together.
The fonts I have used on my
main tasks I have carried
through to my ancillary texts.
Conventional magazines usually
follow this as it allows the
magazine to look more
professional. It also helps with
the house-style of my magazine,
so that when you think of my
magazine, that is the type of font
you picture.
I have took both images from my contents
page and billboard to show up close how I
carried on the autumn/winter theme to
maintain the same house-style throughout.
Anyone who see’s the billboard will
automatically think of the autumn edition of my
magazine.
4. IMAGES
Website and
billboard
imagesMagazine
images
The images included in my main products and ancillary texts are all very
similar in terms of the background, the lighting and the clothing. I have used
a background containing leaves from a tree because since my magazine is
an autumn edition, I thought it would be more effective to take my images
outdoors. I carried this theme throughout so that it if you view one without the
other, the audience would be able to identify straight away that it’s A LA
MODE magazine. You can clearly see in the images that I have focussed my
magazine on fashion and
beauty due to the fashionable
clothing the models are
wearing. To make sure I
focussed on the fashion in my
images, I got one of my
model’s to hold the coat she
was wearing to emphasise
the clothing she is wearing (left). I have also used this idea for the image in the top
right where she’s holding the scarf because I think it’s an effective way to promote
fashion. I have also seen professional existing magazines use this idea to promote
their fashion. I also took images of both model’s together because since they both
appear on my magazine and ancillary texts, I thought it would be important to picture
them together so that my audience can recognise my magazine not only through the
colours and font, but through the model’s also.
5. MAST-HEAD
As you can see from the images to the right, I have used my
masthead throughout the entirety of my work. Not only did I include
my masthead throughout, I also used the same font throughout so
that it made my magazine identifiable through the font and so that it
looks professional. However, when I was creating my website, the
font I used for my magazine wasn’t included on the selection of
fonts on WIX, however, I searched for one that was very similar to
Didot Bold (my main masthead font), and I personally think I got
very close. I included my masthead throughout my magazine (on
my contents and double page spread) so that I could basically put
my trademark on it. Hopefully it all works effectively together that
when someone views A LA MODE in Didot bold, they’ll
automatically think of my magazine.
