2. Introduction:
In this poem ,the poet, Subramania Bharti has very beautifully expressed his ideas about both the destructive
and constructive aspects of the wind.
Wind symbolizes the difficulties that are faced in life.
Theme:
⢠The intensity of natural phenomena is beyond human control
⢠Challenges in life should be faced boldly
⢠Adversities in life deter the weak hearted and make them stronger who have unfaltering will.
3. Paraphrasing
Wind, come softly.
Donât break the shutters of the windows.
Donât scatter the papers.
Donât throw down the books on the shelf.
The poet is addressing the wind. Wind has been personified here.
He is asking wind not to break down the shutters of the windows, scatter the papers in his room and not to throw the
books down from their shelves.
4. There, look what you did â you threw them all down.
You tore the pages of the books.
You brought rain again.
Youâre very clever at poking fun at weaklings.
Frail crumbling houses, crumbling doors, crumbling rafters,
crumbling wood, crumbling bodies, crumbling lives,
crumbling hearts â
the wind god winnows and crushes them all.
The wind didnât listen to the poet.
It threw all the books down. It tore the pages of books. It brought the rain.
It destroyed the weak houses, doors and hearts. The wind god has crushed them all.
The poet , therefore, curses the wind for the destruction it did.
5. He wonât do what you tell him.
So, come, letâs build strong homes,
Letâs joint the doors firmly.
Practice to firm the body.
Make the heart steadfast.
Do this, and the wind will be friends with us.
The wind blows out weak fires.
He makes strong fires roar and flourish.
His friendship is good.
We praise him every day.
The poet now speaks to the readers, saying that the wind does not listen to anybody.
To escape its harmful effects, we should build our homes on a strong foundation. We
must train our bodies and our hearts to combat and resist the ill-effects of the wind. The
wind has both bad effects and good effects. The bad effect is that it can blow out a
weak fire.
However, if the fire is burning strongly, then the wind will make it burn fiercer, thus
nurturing what is already strong.
The poet comes to the conclusion that if we are strong, then the wind is a good friend
for us to have, as it will increase our strength.
