SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING – THE DOUBLE EDGED GAME
Social media – the most powerful digital media with irrefutable superiority in the internet. But with
great power comes great responsibility, as the saying goes. While it is essential to tame the social media
websites for the purpose of digital marketing, it is also important to understand that the same social
media can also be used for the opposite purposes.
Combating the negativity
The population of social media is at best an engaging informed audience amidst whom marketing (if
done right) would have a great positive effect. But in some cases, the same patrons of social media also
take to the medium to quickly serve up ‘reviews’ or comments and opinions about a particular brand or
product that might prove to be negative and / or unfavourable.
It is common understanding that while marketing only gets a company to a certain stage, it is the quality
of the product or service that makes the company stand out amongst its competitors. But the right kind
of social media marketing also leaves way for negative opinions, and constructive criticism even if it is
unfavourable. Understanding unfavourable reviews and incorporating certain features from them to
ensure the product is well received should be the best way to combat negativity.
Understanding the promotional activities
There is a constant battle between using the full potential of social media, and limiting promotional
activities to not seem overbearing. It is essential to strike a fine balance between both of these to make
the best use of social media as a marketing tool. The first step is always to understand what works best,
and the second step is to do it right.
Promotional activities can be of various types. There can be posts on social media website that are
aimed at attracting potential customers. The spreading of audio visual media is another promotional
activity. But in all these cases, before the users are engaged with interactive content, it becomes
important to check if the promotional activities are well received.
What constitutes social media promotion?
Digital marketing includes, but is not limited to, social media. A huge part of digital marketing is about
search engine optimisation. The whole process includes the creation of a website by website
developers, using the right and relevant keywords, optimising the website experience for search engines
to index and redirect consumers, making sure the website comes up as one of the first hits in the result
pages of search engines, and finally, giving content for social media.
For social media promotion to be effective, the base content needs to be in place. The website creation
and other aspects of digital media have to be perfected before the company engages itself in social
media. Because the moment the promotional activities begin, social media followers would need a
target, a place to visit to know more about the company. This is the basic functionality of a website.
A website is by itself a chance for the company to talk about itself directly instead of consumers having
to rely on other third party sources.
