Note: Answer all questions. Kindly note that answers for 10 marks questions should be approximately
of 400 words. Each questionis followedbyevaluationscheme.
1 Research is a sequential method of enquiry, directed towards a clear implicit or explicit objective.
Describe in detail the stepsto be carried out in a typical research study.
Answer: Research is a systematic inquiry that investigates hypotheses, suggests new interpretations of
data or texts,andposesnewquestionsforfuture researchtoexplore.
Research consistsof:
 Askinga questionthatnobodyhasaskedbefore;
 Doingthe necessaryworkto findthe answer;and
 Communicatingthe knowledge youhave
2 What are descriptive researchdesigns?Explainthe differentkindsof descriptive researchdesigns.
Answer: Descriptive research is a study designed to depict the participants in an accurate way. More
simplyput, descriptive researchisall aboutdescribingpeople whotake partinthe study.
There are three ways a researchercan go about doing a descriptive researchproject, and theyare:
 Observational,definedasa methodof viewingandrecordingthe participants
 Case study,definedasanin-depthstudyof anindividual orgroupof individuals
 Survey,definedasabrief interview ordiscussionwithanindividual aboutaspecifictopic
3 Discuss the concepts involved in Testing of Hypothesis. Also discuss the steps involved in testing the
hypothesis.
Answer: A statistical hypothesis is a statement about the distribution of X. Equivalently, a statistical
hypothesis specifies a set of possible distributions of X: the set of distributions for which the statement
is true. A hypothesis that specifies a single distribution for X is called simple; a hypothesis that specifies
more than one distribution for X is called composite. In hypothesis testing, the goal is to see if there is
sufficient statistical evidence to reject a presumed null hypothesis in favor of a conjectured alternative
hypothesis. The null hypothesis is usually denoted H0 while the alternative hypothesis is usually denoted
H1.
4 a. Distinguishbetween:
i. SchedulesandQuestionnaires
Answer:
S.No Questionnaire Schedule
1 Questionnaire is generally sent through mail
to informants to be answered as specified in a
covering letter, but otherwise without further
assistance fromthe sender.
A schedule is generally filled by the research
worker or enumerator, who can interpret
the questionswhennecessary.
ii.Open endedand closedendedquestions
Answer: Closed-ended questions come in a multitude of forms, but are defined by their need to have
explicit options for a respondent to select from. There are a wide variety of closed-ended question types
for survey creators to choose from, including: Multiple choice, semantic differential, drop down, check
boxes, ranking, and many more. Each question type does not allow the respondent to provide unique or
unanticipated answers, but rather, they have to choose from a list of pre-selected options. It’s like being
offeredspaghettiorhamburgersfordinner,insteadof beingasked“Whatwouldyoulike fordinner?”.
Questionsthatare closed-endedare
b. Explain the questionnaire designprocess.
Answer: 1 State the information required- This will depend upon the nature of the problem, the
purpose of the studyand hypothesisframed. The targetaudience mustbe concentratedon.
2 State the kind of interviewing technique- interviewing method can be telephone, mails, personal
interview or electronic interview. Telephonic interview can be computer assisted.Personal interview can
be conducted at respondent’s place or at mall or shopping place. Mail interview can take the form of
mail panel.Electronicinterviewtakesplace eitherthroughelectronicmailsorthroughthe internet.

5 Explainthe any three types of comparative and non-comparative scalesof each in detail.
Answer: Comparative scales emerged from the social sciences in an attempt to measure or order
attributes with respect to quantitative attributes or traits. Scaling provides a mechanism for measuring
abstract concepts. A comparative scale is an ordinal or rank order scale that can also be referred to as a
nonmetric scale. Respondents evaluate two or more objects at one time and objects are directly
compared with one another as part of the measuring process. For example you could ask someone if
they prefer listening to MP3s through a Zune or an iPod. You could take it a step further and add some
otherMP3 playerbrandsto the comparison.
6 Explainthe Structure of the Research Report. What are the guidelinesforeffective reportwriting?
Answer: The main features of a report are described below to provide a general guide. These should be
usedinconjunctionwiththe instructionsor guidelinesprovidedbyyourdepartment.
Title Page
This should briefly but explicitly describe the purpose of the report (if this is not obviousfrom the title of
the work). Other details you may include could be your name, the date and for whom the report is
written.
