“Managing Social Media Moguls,
a Social Media Crisis Case Study”
Sunshine Village Ski & Snowboard Resort, which operates
in Banff National Park in Banff, Alberta, came under fire
after four employees were dismissed over job performance.
Rallying behind their friends and expressing concern about
an understaffed team, supporters of these ex-employees
used social media to publicly question those decisions,
starting a war of words that was both ugly and unwarranted.
The narrative that was created online was different than the
real reasons for those dismissals.

Sunshine Village was taken off -guard. Unprepared, the resort was not
able to initially counter those negative comments to prevent them from
escalating. The attempts it made within social media channels to
correct false information fell on deaf ears.
Speakers Jay Cloutier of Marketwire Sysomos and Doug Firby,
Director, Communications & Media Services with the Calgary Real
Estate Board (Formerly with Sunshine Village Ski & Snowboard
Resort), will discuss this crisis communications issue in detail from
beginning to today.
