Our July event included a brief overview of the Social Media Club’s objectives and philosophy presented by steering committee member Dean Piccirillo. The evening’s events also included a 45 minute presentation lead by Jason Breed from Neighborhood America. Jason talked about emerging trends in the social media marketplace. Our event that evening closed with a panel discussion with panelists from The Naples Tomato, The City of Fort Myers and Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida.

Why a Social Media Club?  Southwest Florida has both regional challenges and significant opportunities  Fortunately, our challenges are more than matched by our unparalleled assets and resources  Hope to be a catalyst to help draw positive attention to our region and our community  Provide another opportunity for Southwest Floridians to build connections within our community

What is Social Networking?  Social Media sometimes involves the use of social networking tools  A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. What is the Social Media Club?  A global organization now in its third year with chapters around the U.S. and the world  Over 60 active chapters in the U.S.  15 active chapters around the globe including chapters in Canada, Europe, Australia and the Middle East  There are currently over 100 start-up chapters around the world forming with approximately 10 new communities a month expressing an interest in starting a chapter  To learn more about the global organization, please visit –

Membership  Membership is open –One can be a member and participate in club events with no requirement to pay any annual dues  The national organization was founded based on the principal of open, free and inclusive membership rather than closed and exclusive  Visit – to register and be listed as a member

The Southwest Florida Chapter  Those of us involved from a leadership standpoint established our initial relationships through the use of social networking tools  Our local organization was promoted through social media and social networking tools including our website and blog and social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn  Much of the collaboration and planning for this and future events occurred through the use of online or Web 2.0 tools such as Basecamp and Google Groups
