raising standards worldwide™
DELIVERING BEST PRACTICE IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT THROUGH BS EN 16001
Camfil Farr is a global manufacturer of air
filtration equipment and associated services.
In order to better understand customer requirements
and improve the efficiency of its own business,
Camfil Farr decided to implement the new energy
management system standard, BS EN 16001.
The standard enables an organisation to develop and
implement a policy, identify areas of significantly high
energy consumption and target energy reductions.
Client objectives
• Better understand the political, legislative, economic
and environmental issues facing building owners
•	Implement countrywide best practice in relation to
energy management
•	Reduce energy costs using a structured framework
and approach
•	Ensure corporate readiness for the demands of the
Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme and other
impending legislation
Business achievements
• 	Tangible reduction in energy consumption: gas 35%;
electricity 22%; diesel fuel 19%
•	Recognition as a seriously sustainable company,
operating to best practice
•	Creation of a formalised energy policy and objectives
•	Establishment of an energy-aware and continuous
improvement culture
“We never used to pay much attention
to our energy bill. However, since
implementing the management system
we have been able to save over 20%
in energy consumption year on year.
BSI has helped put us on the map as a
truly sustainable business in a very short
space of time.”
Bill Wilkinson, Managing Director Camfil Farr

DELIVERING BEST PRACTICE IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT THROUGH BS EN 16001
Why BS EN 16001?
Like any manufacturing facility Camfil has been
experiencing rising and unstable energy costs. The
company recognised that it would gain competitive
advantage by better understanding the efficiency of
its own operation as well as the political, legislative,
economic and environmental issues facing its customers
i.e. building owners. This has been achievable through
implementation and subsequent certification to the
management system standard BS EN 16001. Third
party certification will be a valuable tool for Camfil to
demonstrate to key stakeholders that it meets the very
latest energy management best practice.
Benefits from implementation
BS EN 16001 is a relatively new standard and Camfil has
played an active role in the process of developing and
trialling BSI’s assessment and certification scheme. The
company also attended BSI training courses in order to
better understand the requirements of the standard.
“Everyone is starting to wake up to the obscene
waste of energy in this country,” says Bill Wilkinson,
Managing Director for Camfil Farr. “Legislation has
crept up on everyone and there are huge savings to be
made everywhere. Since a core part of Camfil’s business
is selling energy saving filters we felt it was crucial for
the organisation to be seen to be practising what
it preaches!”
“The implementation of an energy management
system has been easier than we thought it would be,”
says Wilkinson. “To date we have seen significant
cost savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions with
minimal capital outlay. With an existing environmental
management system (ISO 14001) in place for ten
years, we were able to integrate the requirements of
BS EN 16001 into our operation somewhat seamlessly
– measuring and monitoring energy costs is an inherent
part of the Camfil culture.”
BSI/UK/317/0410/E/LB
“The new energy management system however has
prompted us to adapt our existing data collection
activities and identify non-conformances,” continues
Wilkinson. “By establishing a base line and
measuring against pre-agreed factors we have been
able to develop a continuous improvement culture
which fits perfectly with our lean manufacturing
model. Independent certification will ‘rubber stamp’
us as a trustworthy and truly sustainable business
which hugely benefits the industry we work in. Our
influence in the Greater London area alone can
reduce energy consumption dramatically.”
“Internally the management system has helped
engage employees and provided a vehicle to harvest
ideas as well as improve profitability. Certification
will provide independent third party assurance
that Camfil is a progressive, well managed and
professional organisation. However, we recognise
that achievement is temporary and continual
improvement is what really counts.”
BSI’s role
“BSI has the pedigree to deliver this extremely
important standard,” states Wilkinson. “We have
a history of working with BSI since the old days
of BS 5750. We already proudly hold certification
to two management systems, ISO 9001 (quality
management) and ISO 14001 (environmental
management). BSI is skilled, competent,
uncomplicated and practical – they allowed us to
move at our pace and made resource available when
we needed it. What more could you ask for?”
