Zumba is a popular dance and aerobics hybrid that incorporates elements of hip-hop, mambo, salsa, soca, merengue, martial arts and some Bollywood and belly dance movements. The activity was created by dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez in the 1990s and rose to prominence and popularity after a series of infomercials appeared in 2002. There are currently over 12 million people taking part in Zumba classes worldwide.
