- If you need further information, please contact Bryan Bamber This presentation with the notes will be available on the District Website Youth Home Page At PETS a very brief résumé of all the Rotary youth competitions and programmes supported and promoted by District was given At District Assembly details the Youth Opportunities portfolio were outlined. Tonight is not a repetition of the detail as all of this is on the District website. Some of the text on the website will be amended in the near future to hopefully to make it more user friendly. Tonight is an opportunity to summarize the main points, remind you of some of the general points and cover some new points leaving time for an open discussion about any youth opportunity you wish to raise. Please note the text in yellow. Youth Opportunities has been renamed “New Generations” by RI and accepted by RIBI. D1100 will continue with “Youth Opportunities” however documentation from RIBI will use New Generations
- 5 National Competitions 7 Programmes This schedule which summarises all the opportunities is available from the District Website, Youth Home Page
- Details of objective; age groups; format; prizes; judging criteria; dates; entries; rules and posters are all available on the relevant District Website Youth Competition page. Dates are set by National Final Dates; For Young Chef; Young Musician and Youth Speaks the entry date is 21 October 2011. This only requires an intent to enter so that the required number of District Competitions can be organised. The details of the entry can be provided just before the competition dates. If you have a late interest after the entry dates, I will do all I can to accommodate you. Please do not use this as an excuse for late entries. Those who have heard me before will have heard me talk about a programme of youth opportunities relating school terms. The dates this year mean that contact for all competitions should be made with schools during the autumn term. All Clubs should give all competitors certificates as these are valuable documents for a students’ personal portfolio. I understand one student obtained part time work after showing her Young Chef Certificate. A good selling point when talking to schools. Clubs should ask their adjudicators to give feedback to competitors. Difficult for Young Photographer & Young Writer Each Club in District is entitled to submit an entry into District competitions. Where groups of clubs organize a joint event, then each club within the group is entitled to submit an entrant into the District Competition. Posters are available for each competition. These can be customised before printing. Clubs are encouraged to reimburse competitors in Club & District Young Chef Competition. District has agreed in principle to assist clubs with expenses for competitors to attend Regional and National competitions. Mechanism to be formulated External Promotion: For Young Chef it is understood that Philip Berio, the sponsor, will contact all schools about the competition. Young Writer; Young Photographer & Youth Speaks is being promoted on the Olympic Games Get Set Website. The Get Set network is a special community of schools and colleges which are demonstrating a commitment to the Olympics’ and Paralympics’ Values From these sources District will receive requests from schools wishing to participate in the competition. Local Rotary Clubs are then contacted with a request to run a competition. This worked successfully last year. It is hoped that all clubs will respond positively to such requests. When a school wants to participate then Rotary is on to a winner with a valuable introduction to the school to promote other Youth Opportunities.
- Information about all on the District Website. Young Citizen Award There are five awards and the winners are showcased at the RIBI Conference Clubs are entitled to submit one entry directly to RIBI. Entry date is 29 February 2012. It is suggested that clubs start collecting newspaper clippings of possible entries now so that when the time comes they have a list of possibilities to choose from. Last year there were 62 entries nationally, four from District 1100 and the young person submitted by Dursley received one of the awards. - There are four avenues to Youth Exchange Full information is available on the website in red Of particular interest is the Camps and Tours section on the website as there are some fantastic opportunities, including cultural, sporting and leisure activities for all Young People within the age groups and this includes children and grandchildren of Rotarians. Most applications originate from the website, where young people register and apply. Once their application is accepted, District receives a request to find a local sponsoring club. Local Rotary Clubs are then contacted with a request to sponsor the applicant. Again it is hoped that all clubs will respond positively to such requests. Generally sponsorship costs are minimal it is more a vetting process.
- Young Technology Tournament: The tournament is a one-day event for teams of four students from local schools and colleges. Teams compete against each other and the clock as they undertake a previously unseen challenge, with materials supplied . The task is consistent with the requirements of the national curriculum and its execution develops team building, communication skills, planning and time management, as well as solving a design and technology problem. Students have to use team-building skills to solve a design and technology problem, as well as to practice oral, written and graphical communications skills. The day culminates in the testing session when teams can see the performance of competing designs and solutions. Further details from RIBI will be available soon Young Achiever: A popular award developed by Cheltenham Cleeve Vale Rotary Club which rewards achievers rather than the best students. Further details available form Bob Price of Cheltenham Cleeve Vale Junior Youth Speaks: Many clubs organise a Junior Youth Speaks Competition. District is happy to put organising clubs in contact with each other if they want to have an inter club competition.
