The opening sequence of Zombieland uses quick montage clips and Metallica music to establish the zombie apocalypse. Scenes show a zombie chasing a falling man, a zombie coughing blood to indicate their threat, and a man being attacked by multiple zombies with an ironic sign saying "The end is near." Intercut are brief comedic moments like a zombie chasing a fireman who is on fire. The sequence finishes with a man thrown through a car window in front of the camera to end on an unsettling note.
1. Zombieland Introduction
In the opening sequence of the horror film “Zombieland”, it shows a low angle of
a man falling from a set of stairs with a “zombie” trying to catch the man. The
whole scene is put into slow motion to make the action look much more
dramatic. It is also a montage throughout the opening scene of the movie
because of the quick snappy clips and the music that plays with it. The song that
is played is from Metallica; this is very appropriate and relevant to what is going
on throughout the visual. Whilst the guy is falling, there are on screen credits and
when he falls onto them, special effects make the letters crumble into pieces
after impact which makes the scene look more real and adds a realistic touch to
too it. The costume of the zombie was very casual showing that the monster was
just a normal person before it happened. But, the makeup on the zombie made it
look terrifying with blood all over its clothing and face, making it looks hungry
for human brains!
The clip after that is set on a normal setting on a motorway, in the background
you are able to see the cars in a jam, which shows the hectic situation, were
everyone is rushing to get away from the troubles. Besides that, there is a close
up of a zombie coughing blood (once again in slow motion), which looks rather
graphic and gruesome. This gives the audience an indication of what monsters
they will be dealing with throughout the movie, although the title gives that away
already. After another couple of clips, a man with some cardboard attached to
him with the words “The end is near” written on it is being attacked by multiple
zombies. This is ironic because it is blatantly apparent that the end of the world
is already here.
2. The scenes fade away into the next shot, which is of fire fighters trying to
extinguish a fire. A zombie is chasing one of the firemen, which is on fire, which
is rather coincidental and also adds a bit of a comedy effect for the viewers. The
opening sequence finishes with a man being thrown into a car window screen.
The camera is placed behind the window screen, which makes it look like the
man is being thrown into the camera. There is then an asynchronous and Foley
noise of smashing glass and the scene finishes with the view of shattered glass.
