A Message From the Dean
T
he Frank G. Zarb
School of Business is
continuously developing
new ways to educate and
cultivate our students. This past
spring, we took this commitment
to the next level by adopting a
new student-centric mission –
Educating for Personal and
Professional Achievement. The
theme focuses on preparing
students to advance in their career paths, and propel them in areas
such as lifelong learning, corporate social responsibility, ethics and
community engagement.
This mission resulted from an outgrowth of the Strategic Planning
and Oversight Committee (SPOC), a team composed of faculty
from various departments whose task is to constantly reevaluate
and enhance the Zarb educational experience. Recently, SPOC
has made major strides in positioning the Zarb School at the top
of its class. As a result of SPOC and several other value-driven
initiatives, some of our most recent advances include:
• Attainment of noteworthy rankings. Our online M.B.A. program
was identified as among the top 100 online graduate business
programs in the nation by U.S. News World Report’s 2013 Best
Online Program rankings – the only New York metropolitan
online M.B.A. program to make the list. The program was also
ranked 20th in the nation by Poets Quants.
• Improvement of incoming graduate student credentials through
increased GMAT and GRE scores.
• Introduction of online graduate programs and courses.
• Addition of concentrations such as supply chain management at
the undergraduate level and strategic health care management at
the graduate level as part of the online M.B.A. program.
• Adoption of higher standards for intellectual contributions.
• Significant enrollment growth, especially among our
international student population.
• Expansion of study abroad programs in areas such as France,
England, Spain, Germany and Korea.
• Creation and continuation of several programs related to
experiential learning and community service.
Throughout this publication, you will get a glimpse of the many
ways the Zarb School has brought this mission to life. We have
highlighted several of our signature events that complement our
high quality education, in addition to a selection of faculty and
student accomplishments witnessed this past spring. We also
continue our strong commitment to several Zarb community
engagement programs.
In preparation for our upcoming AACSB maintenance of
accreditation, we continue to focus on the ambitions we envision
for our students. Within the next five years, we will continue to
reassess and expand various initiatives throughout the school,
with a specific focus on academic excellence; curriculum delivery
and instructional excellence through experiential learning;
internationalization of the educational experience; and faculty
development, scholarship and recognition.
As the Zarb School forges ahead, continuing to fulfill its mission in
Educating for Personal and Professional Achievement, I would
like to thank all of you who make it possible – our administrators,
faculty, students, alumni, staff and extended Zarb family. It is
because of your hard work, dedication and commitment to the Zarb
School that we continue to advance and discover new and
innovative ways to engage and educate our students.

SmartLine team at the
New York State Business
Plan Competition.
Zarb Student Accomplishments
Capital One
Cross Campus Challenge
A team of Hofstra student entrepreneurs
competed against New Jersey Institute of
Technology and LaGuardia Community College
students to win the grand prize in the Capital
One Cross Campus Challenge. This competition
asks students to come up with business ideas
that address gaps in the marketplace. The
winning team – Henry Rood-Matza, a junior
entrepreneurship major; Alexandria Spiteri, also a
junior entrepreneurship major; and Lucas Gallardo,
a senior political science major – developed an
iPhone app called Boyfriend’s Bestfriend, which
reminds men of important milestones such as
birthdays and anniversaries, in addition to providing
gift and date ideas for the occasions. The team won
$3,000 in seed money to take their idea to market.
Thirty-Fifth Annual
International Collegiate
Conference
The Hofstra chapter of the American
Marketing Association (HAMA) took third
place in the marketing case competition
at the 35th Annual International Collegiate
Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Under
the direction of Rick Wilson, Ph.D., assistant
professor of marketing and international
business, this is the fourth time Hofstra has
placed in the finals in the past five years.
The competition was sponsored by
Donate Life America, a national non-profit
organization committed to increasing organ,
eye and tissue donation in the United
States. Students were asked to develop
a comprehensive integrated marketing
campaign to increase organ donations among
18- to 24-year-olds.
New York State
Business Plan Competition
At the New York State Business Plan
Competition in April, Daniel Reitman, a
senior business major, along with students
Bimal Patel, Charlie Torsiello, Zach Mitchell
and Brandon Borresen, won third place for
their business plan for a new app called
SmartLine – a wait list management
solution for restaurants and customers.
In fall 2012 the group won first place
and $4,000 in the Capital One Campus
Entrepreneurship Challenge at Hofstra,
and later won $5,000 and a chance
to compete in the final rounds of the
state competition in Albany where they
placed third and earned another $1,500
in prize money.

Dr. Comer was named editor of a special issue of the Journal of Management Education on
crisis management education, published in February 2013 (Volume 37, Issue 1). As guest
editor, Dr. Comer wrote the editorial “Educating Students to Prepare for and Respond to

A dedicated business writer and blogger, Dr. Evans has recently produced works covering marketing,

Strategy,” scheduled for online publication in late 2013 to be available globally, as well as “Using
Financial Ratios to Track Performance: A Model and Twenty-Five Year Analysis of U.S. Retailing,”
(co-authored with Anil Mathur, Ph.D., Brodlieb Distinguished Professor of Business and chairperson,
Department of Marketing and International Business) a submission that appeared online in the
International Review of Retail, Distribution and Consumer Research (May 2013). Notably, Dr. Evans is
also the co-author (along with Dr. Berman) of the latest version of a widely circulated textbook titled
Retail Management: A Strategic Approach, Twelfth Edition (2013).
Carole L. Jurkiewicz, Ph.D.
Professor of Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business
At the 2013 National American Society for Public Administration Conference held in March, Dr. Jurkiewicz was
featured at an author signing event for her latest book, The Foundations of Organizational Evil. Her co-authored article
“Right from Wrong: The Influence of Spirituality on Perceptions of Unethical Business Activities” was also listed as the
third most influential publication in the field of management and religion between 1934 and 2004. She recently
presented at the 73rd Annual Academy of Management Conference where two of her books were also featured.

Voted as the 2013 Teacher of the Year at Zarb, Professor Vogel is described by recent
graduates as extremely knowledgeable, friendly and fair – an educator who makes sure
his students are prepared and enjoy learning. His latest acknowledgements
also include being named winner of the Best Paper at the North East Academy of Legal
Studies in Business’ Spring 2013 Conference for his work “A Review of the International
Bar Association and LexisNexis Technology Studies and the American Bar Association’s
Commission on Ethics 20/20: The Legal Profession’s Response to the Issues Associated
with the Generational Gap in Using Technology and Internet Social Media.”

Successful Northeast Decision
Sciences Institute Meeting
The Frank G. Zarb School of Business sponsored
the 42nd annual meeting of the Northeast Decision
Sciences Institute (NEDSI), an affiliate of the
Decision Sciences Institute – a multidisciplinary
professional society dedicated to the development
and application of quantitative and behavioral
methods to administrative problems.
The event, organized by John Affisco, Ph.D.,
professor of information technology and quantitative
methods, was held in New York from April 5-7, 2013.
It brought together more than 200 faculty, students
and practitioners from the United States and around
the globe to present their research. In addition,
several Zarb faculty members were elected to NEDSI
leadership positions for the coming year, including
Dr. Affisco as president.

The Zarb School was honored to host Ambassador Ido Aharoni, consul general
of Israel in New York, for his discussion “Israel: Broadening the Conversation.”
This lecture explored the emerging conversation about Israel, its impact on
Israel’s performance and its relevance to Jewish life in America. Ambassador
Ido Aharoni, a 20-year veteran of Israel’s Foreign Service, is known for his
work on improving Israel’s overall positioning in the United States.

Members of the Zarb Alumni Association (ZAA)
assisted more than 80 students during two practice
interviews and a resume critique evening this past
spring. In addition, they hosted an event honoring
Zarb student organization leaders with a reception at
the Hofstra University Club, providing an informal
opportunity for alumni and students to network.
The ZAA continues to bridge the relationship between alumni and
current students, increasing internships and full-time employment opportunities. During
the spring, the association hosted three alumni networking events in Nassau, Suffolk and
NewYork City. The networking events helped raise funds for the Frank G. Zarb School
of Business Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship.

On April 9, 2013, Hofstra’s Association of Latino Professionals in Finance
and Accounting (ALPFA) proudly presented Julio A. Portalatin ’81,
president and CEO, Mercer, in a special address, “From Classroom to
Boardroom: Reflections From a Zarb Graduate.” He intimately spoke to
current students about his experiences, challenges and accomplishments as
he climbed the career ladder, and also offered his personal perspective on
how to best succeed in their careers.

he Center for International Financial Services and
Markets and the Hofstra Cultural Center presented
a conference, “Impact Investing: From Private
Equity to Microfinance,” on April 29, 2013. This
conference featured a range of experts who discussed
recent trends in impact investing and its influence on
corporate behavior and the social environment.
The conference, sponsored by Broadridge Financial
Solutions Inc., began with executive luncheon keynote
speaker Kai-Yan Lee, chief U.S. representative, China
Vanke Ltd., who discussed the effects of real estate and
the economy on impact investing.
The event then commenced with two panel discussions.
The first discussed impact investing with regard to the
corporate, regulatory and academic industries. Moderated
by Esmeralda Lyn, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor Emerita,
the panelists included Lauren Koopman, director, U.S.
sustainable business solutions, PricewaterhouseCoopers
LLP; Lydia Doll, senior associate, corporate responsibility,
NYSE Euronext; and Abigail Noble, investors industries,
World Economic Forum.
The second panel discussed microfinance. Moderated by
Carole L. Jurkiewicz, Ph.D., professor of management,
entrepreneurship and general business, this forum featured
Timothy Ogden, managing director, financial access
initiative, NYU; Amy Feldman, director of programs,
Business Outreach Center Network; Timothy Rudd,
research associate, MDRC; and Scott Budde, CEO, Better
Harvest Federal Credit Union.
The conference continued with a special address by the
Joseph G. Astman Distinguished Conference Scholar
Paranjoy Thakurta, journalist and television anchor for
India Talks. Mr. Thakurta is an independent journalist and
educator. His work experience, spanning more than 35
years, cuts across different media, including print, radio,
television and documentary cinema. A banquet featuring
keynote speaker Vincent Molinari, founder and CEO,
GATE Technologies, concluded the evening. Mr. Molinari
has been the driving force behind GATE’s mission to
create new market infrastructure that brings efficiency,
transparency and liquidity to the unstructured global
alternative asset markets.

Center
This past spring, the Zarb School and the
Long Island Export Assistance Center, a
division of the U.S. Commercial Service of
the Department of Commerce, organized
a women’s panel discussion, “High Heels
Abroad: Grow Your Business Internationally.”
Sponsored by Citibank, attendees learned
how to expand their business from industry
and government experts, including the use of
trade finance options and branding resources.

Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) and the Zarb School continued their long history of collaboration through the blog and podcast project.
Using social media technologies, Zarb students recently blogged and created podcasts about issues that are highly relevant to young, professional adults

Ladder to Leadership –
Flushing Bank and
Uniondale High School
Zarb Women in Business also continued their partnership
with Uniondale High School to offer “Ladder to Leadership,”
a unique mentoring program for female high school
students. In spring 2013 two special programs were hosted
at Hofstra – a professionally facilitated etiquette lunch and
tea where achievement awards were distributed. Funded by
Flushing Bank, this program will enter its fourth year this fall.

Giving Back
Students have also taken on a
leadership role in giving back to
the community. Recently, Zarb
graduate students participated
in the Polar Bear Plunge in Long
Beach to support the Make-A-
Wish Foundation. Others students
also volunteered at “BOLD,”
Staten Island’s largest food drive, accompanied by Jian Xiao, adjunct instructor of
accounting, taxation and legal studies in business. Organized by Deloitte CEO
Joe Delaney, students classified more than 60,000 items, which were distributed to
25 local not-for-profit organizations.
The Zarb School also continues its many other community engagement initiatives
with Capital One, Commerce Plaza, and NASDAQ. For further details, visit
