This festival is celebrated by the
Ngoni tribe in Chipata to mark the
first fruit of the season. The chief
dresses up in leopard skin and
tastes the treat, which is usually
maize, pumpkin or sugarcane. He
must then spear a bull and drink
its blood, re-enacting a tradition
that descended from the Zulu
cultures. This event takes place
each year on February 24.

Ukusefya Pa Ngwena is a traditional
ceremony held under Chitimukulu by the
Bemba people in Mungwi District, Zambia.
The event is held every in August. The
debut ceremony occurred from 1 and 2 of
August. It was held where the Bemba
People first settled after they migrated from
Angola, popularly known as the Democratic
Republic of Congo. There is a massive
trench that surrounds the area built in the
17th century to protect from war with the
neighboring Ngoni Tribe. Its believed that
they filled the trench with poison tipped
spears and then covered the trench with
branches to hide it. When the Ngoni Tribe
rushed across they fell into the trench and
were killed. Nowadays, there are
permanent structures within area
surrounded by the trench and each year
grass huts are built surrounding the trench
to act as accommodation for attendees.

To get out of the water and onto dry
land is the meaning of the word that
shares its name with the most famous
festival in Zambia. Marking the end of
the rainy season, the chief of the Lozi
people (the Litunga) decides that it’s
time to head for higher ground. Drums
signal that it’s time to pack up and
embark in canoes. The Litunga
dresses up in a Victorian ambassador
costume and is taken down the river,
while music is played and feasts
enjoyed. The ceremony dates back
over 300 years and takes place in the
Zambezi Basin in May.

Zambian Traditional Art
Zambian Traditional Art. In Zambia, traditional art was expressed in pottery,
basketry, carvings and stools. More materials are being used nowadays, such
as metal (copper or wire), plastic and fabrics. Recycled art can be seen
especially in tourist markets and curio centres. The chitenge material is used in
dress (particularly traditional dress, or wrapped around the waist like a
sarong), but this type of African fabric has recently gained worldwide popularity
in African fashion clothing and accessories.

Zambian Traditional Music
Music in ZambiaTraditional Zambian music is characterised by a lot of singing
and dancing. The instrument that is played more than any other is the drum,
and there there are others such as the thumb piano (kalimba, kathandi, or
kangombio in some Zambian languages, or mbira in some cultures), and the
kilimba (marimba or xylophone).Today, Zambia's music is a mixture of
traditional, African and western and contemporary sounds with influences from
Zambia's different traditional groups, music from other African countries such
as the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa, and music from
Jamaica and American genres.
