As stated in the trial edition,  (which can still be found at  www.zagreblist.com ) this newsletter was created to make life in Zagreb easier and to help everyone make the most of it. Therefore we want to surprise you with relevant and useful information. We also want to present it to you in a pleasing format.  The picture at the top of this page is, we think, particularly inspiring. Also inspiring is this week’s main topic:  Croatian wines.  Wahyd Vannoni   Editor and Founder Croatian Wines, an Overview: by Dean Susek The highest quality white wines made in Dalmatia are from the Pošip grape variety. In it you will find the perfect combination of sugar and acidity which make a wine with an alcohol content of about 13% which provides a full bodied midpalate, while also retaining a refreshing acidity. This is a rare occurrence in warm climate wines and makes Pošip a very pleasant complement to Dalmatian fish dishes. The wine Pošip is made from a grape indigenous to the island of Korčula. Its wine perfectly reflects the climate and ambience of that island. In it you can recognize the aromas associated with the Dalmatian south: rosemary, heather, pine and anis. All these herbs infuse the air during the summer, and you can recognize them in a well made Pošip wine. Croatian Wine by Dean Sušec Please help keep this information current zagreb@zagreblist.com 6 Continued from page 1.   The wine is golden yellow, not because there's anything wrong with it, but because the grapes are that color! The grapes themselves are quite amazing. They look like small upside down teardrops, and when pressed the honey-like liquid released could only be described as nectar. In the past there were only two producers of Pošip wines and they were industrial cooperatives. Today, however, there are a number of private wineries making Pošip more naturally, using oak barrels and more gentle techniques. It is a pleasure to say that they are all quite good, it is only a matter of taste that determines the preference of a particular producer. Some producers I can recommend include Intrada, Sveti Ivan, Grgich, Smokvica and Čara. Until recently, Pošip wines were exclusively made on the island of Korčula in southern Dalmatia. For those not familiar with Korčula, it was first inhabited by the Greeks around 300 B.C. ('Korkyra Melana') who are thought to have introduced vines there. Another grape variety found only on Korčula carries the name 'Grk' to remind us of this. Unfortunately, only a handful of people make it in the village of Lumbarda near the town of Korčula. Today there are also a number of wines which are either 100% Pošip or a blend of several varieties made on neighboring islands including: Brač (Bracanović), Hvar (Plenković- Zavala),and the Pelješac peninsula which is closest to the southern tip of Korčula. When drinking Pošip you can recognize scents of rosemary, heather, anis, and a myriad of mediterranean blossoms. Sometimes they are accompanied by slight vanilla and clove overtones because of the use of small oak barrels sometimes labeled 'barik' or 'barrique'. In weight and power of flavor Pošip most closely resembles Chardonnay. For this reason I recommend it be treated as one in a gastronomic sense. Always drink Pošip out of a medium sized balloon glass. This resembles a cognac glass but is a bit larger. In general, this glass is for drinking full flavoured wines with an abundance of secondary aromas. These are the ones which gently unfold in the glass for up to half an hour after pouring. Since Pošip is a blue-blooded wine, it reveals more complexity if drunk slowly from one of these glasses at a slightly cooled temperature rather than if it were gulped haphazardly. As with all great wines, Pošip should not be drunk with overly salty or spicy foods. In fact, the structure and body of Pošip are such that it should be enjoyed with elegant, subtly flavoured foods. The foods which best accompany Pošip include lobster, prawns, calamari or white fish off the grill (Adriatic, of course!), all served either in light butter or cream sauces or just olive oil. Stay very light with the garlic! It also complements dishes with mushrooms very well, especially truffles. Keep in mind that in recent years there have been very erratic vintages. For example the heatwave vintage of 2003 produced overly heady wines all over Croatia, but especially Dalmatia where they reached up to 15% alcohol and are a little less well structured. Dean Sušec is an enologist who has worked in the Grgić winery on Pelješac peninsula where he made Dingać and Pošip wine and also in a number of prominent private wineries in Slavonia. Wahyd Vannoni Editor and Founder Croatian Wines, an Overview: by Dean Susek The highest quality white wines made in Dalmatia are from the Pošip grape variety. In it you will find the perfect combination of sugar and acidity which make a wine with an alcohol content of about 13% which provides a full bodied midpalate, while also retaining a refreshing acidity. This is a rare occurrence in warm climate wines and makes Pošip a very pleasant complement to Dalmatian fish dishes. The wine Pošip is made from a grape indigenous to the island of Korčula. Its wine perfectly reflects the climate and ambience of that island. In it you can recognize the aromas associated with the Dalmatian south: rosemary, heather, pine and anis. All these herbs infuse the air during the summer, and you can recognize them in a well made Pošip wine. The wine is golden yellow, not because there's anything wrong with it, but because the grapes are that color! The grapes themselves are quite amazing. They look like small upside down teardrops, and when pressed the honey-like liquid released could only be described as nectar. In the past there were only two producers of Pošip wines and they were industrial cooperatives. Today, however, there are a number of private wineries making Pošip more naturally, using oak barrels and more gentle techniques. It is a pleasure to say that they are all quite good, it is only a matter of taste that determines the preference of a particular producer. Some producers I can recommend include Intrada, Sveti Ivan, Grgich, Smokvica and Čara. Until recently, Pošip wines were exclusively made on the island of Korčula in southern Dalmatia. For those not familiar with Korčula, it was first inhabited by the Greeks around 300 B.C. ('Korkyra Melana') who are thought to have introduced vines there. Another grape variety found only on Korčula carries the name 'Grk' to remind us of this. Unfortunately, only a handful of people make it in the village of Lumbarda near the town of Korčula. Today there are also a number of wines which are either 100% Pošip or a blend of several varieties made on neighboring islands including: Brač (Bracanović), Hvar (Plenković- Zavala),and the Pelješac peninsula which is closest to the southern tip of Korčula. When drinking Pošip you can recognize scents of rosemary, heather, anis, and a myriad of mediterranean blossoms. Sometimes they are accompanied by slight vanilla and clove overtones because of the use of small oak barrels sometimes labeled 'barik' or 'barrique'. In weight and power of flavor Pošip most closely resembles Chardonnay. For this reason I recommend it be treated as one in a gastronomic sense. Always drink Pošip out of a medium sized balloon glass. This resembles a cognac glass but is a bit larger. In general, this glass is for drinking full flavoured wines with an abundance of secondary aromas. These are the ones which gently unfold in the glass for up to half an hour after pouring. Since Pošip is a blue-blooded wine, it reveals more complexity if drunk slowly from one of these glasses at a slightly cooled temperature rather than if it were gulped haphazardly. As with all great wines, Pošip should not be drunk with overly salty or spicy foods. In fact, the structure and body of Pošip are such that it should be enjoyed with elegant, subtly flavoured foods. The foods which best accompany Pošip include lobster, prawns, calamari or white fish off the grill (Adriatic, of course!), all served either in light butter or cream sauces or just olive oil. Stay very light with the garlic! It also complements dishes with mushrooms very well, especially truffles. Keep in mind that in recent years there have been very erratic vintages. For example the heatwave vintage of 2003 produced overly heady wines all over Croatia, but especially Dalmatia where they reached up to 15% alcohol and are a little less well structured.
