Course Project: Cultural Interview
The goal of the project is for the student to experience the value and
challenge of conducting ethnographic fieldwork. If you were doing your PhD
in cultural anthropology I would be sending you out to interview/observe
perhaps dozens of people over the course of perhaps a year or more!! We
will scale this down to a project you can accomplish with a single key
informant and a couple of hours of interview time.
Each student will find one willing key informant. This person can be a
family member, friend, casual acquaintance, or complete stranger. Just make
sure that they are a willing participant, and that they can set aside at
least a couple of hours to be interviewed. There are a few basic
requirements that I expect each student to accomplish in the project:
1. Construct a kinship diagram for your key informant, showing all of ego's
(your informant!) relatives. This includes relatives whose names are known
and unknown. From this kinship diagram, try to draw some conclusions about
the relative importance of kin ties for ego. Use the guidelines in your
textbook for help in making your diagram. Note that ego may have fictional
kin (people who are not "blood relatives" but are nonetheless considered
kin). It is up to you and your informant to decide if peoples' names are to
be included on the chart, but at a minimum identify each person on the chart
with the etic symbols as used in the text book (i.e. F, B, S, Z, FB, MB,
FZD, FFB, etc.)
2. Identify the culture, sub-cultures, ethnic groups, or other social groups
to which the informant belongs. Try to evaluate how strongly your informant
is connected to each group.
3.Explicitly identify the methods that you are using in the project. This
should include your goal, how you met and interviewed your informant, how

Course Project: Cultural Interview
The goal of the project is for the student to experience the value and
challenge of conducting ethnographic fieldwork. If you were doing your PhD
in cultural anthropology I would be sending you out to interview/observe
perhaps dozens of people over the course of perhaps a year or more!! We
will scale this down to a project you can accomplish with a single key
informant and a couple of hours of interview time.
Each student will find one willing key informant. This person can be a
family member, friend, casual acquaintance, or complete stranger. Just make
sure that they are a willing participant, and that they can set aside at
least a couple of hours to be interviewed. There are a few basic
requirements that I expect each student to accomplish in the project:
1. Construct a kinship diagram for your key informant, showing all of ego's
(your informant!) relatives. This includes relatives whose names are known
and unknown. From this kinship diagram, try to draw some conclusions about
the relative importance of kin ties for ego. Use the guidelines in your
textbook for help in making your diagram. Note that ego may have fictional
kin (people who are not "blood relatives" but are nonetheless considered
kin). It is up to you and your informant to decide if peoples' names are to
be included on the chart, but at a minimum identify each person on the chart
with the etic symbols as used in the text book (i.e. F, B, S, Z, FB, MB,
FZD, FFB, etc.)
2. Identify the culture, sub-cultures, ethnic groups, or other social groups
to which the informant belongs. Try to evaluate how strongly your informant
is connected to each group.
3.Explicitly identify the methods that you are using in the project. This
should include your goal, how you met and interviewed your informant, how
you took notes or otherwise recorded information, your overall perspective
(emic or etic). Note any problems or areas of improvement for future work.

Individual Encounter and Synthesis
You will conduct an in-depth, 1-hour interview with an individual or married couple from your selected cultural group in order to develop an understanding of the cultural factors that helped shape that individual’s or couple’s cultural identity.
A variety of issues may be explored in the interview. The knowledge you gained from both parts of the Cultural Immersion Project as well as your sense of the person/couple you interview will guide you in how personal you can get with your questions. Cultural groups and individuals vary on how private they are. Use their feedback regarding what areas you can probe. If the person is very open, go deeper. If not, respect that cultural boundary and ask yourself why that boundary is there. Issues that you may wish to explore during the interview include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Early childhood experiences and parental values;
· Earliest memories of recognizing membership in a culturally different group;
· The role of religion/spirituality;
· Immigration experiences;
· Similarities/differences between couples’ interactions in the U.S. to couples’ interactions in the individual’s culture;

Once your interview is complete, you will answer the questions listed below. First person may be used in your answers, and you must observe correct and current APA style. Mark Davis has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) for reckless driving, speeding, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter as the result of a crash that occurred on a night out with his friends. Mark has been out on bail and pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned. The Judge set a date for Mark's trial and his defense team has been working to collect information about the technology used by the Highway Patrol to reconstruct the crash.
District Attorney O'Malley offered Mark a plea bargain, but Mark chose to take his chances at trial. Mark's attorney, Mr. Chen Long, advised Mark that accepting the plea offer was completely up to Mark, although Mr. Long advised against accepting it because the defense planned to highlight mistakes made by law enforcement during the investigation that could create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors.
The trial begins and during the voir dire of potential jurors, several individuals are excused because they have previous knowledge of Mark's case from the media. Two individuals stated that they could not be impartial because they had loved ones killed in alcohol related crashes as well. Eventually, two men and ten women were seated in Mark's trial.
District Attorney O'Malley presented the State's case clearly and concisely depicting a night on the town full of heavy drinking, which ultimately resulted in Mark's actions causing the death of one individual and injuring four others. Highway Patrolman Green explained to the jury that he immediately suspected alcohol when he arrived on scene because Mark appeared to be intoxicated when they spoke. Following the Judge ruling that it was admissible and not prejudicial, Sergeant Rodney Monroe, from the Highway Patrol Reconstruction Team presented their reconstruction complete with a high-tech computer animated reenactment of the crash. During the cross examination, Defense Attorney Long challenged the reconstruction because the Defense Crash Reconstruction Expert had discovered errors in the mathematical calculations for vehicle speed. The jury appeared to have liked the reconstruction very much regardless of the errors highlighted by the defense.
Mark was convicted of DWI, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter; however, he was acquitted of reckless driving and speeding. The Jury said they could not convict Mark of those offenses because of the mistakes made by law enforcement officers during the investigation.
Because Mark pleads not guilty, but was convicted during trial and had two prior DWI offenses, he was sentenced to ten years in the State Prison. A variety of issues may be explored in the interview. The knowledge you gained from both parts of the Cultural Immersion Project as well as your sense of the person/couple you interview will guide you in how personal you can get with your questions. Cultural groups and individuals vary on how private they are. Use their feedback regarding what areas you can probe. If the person is very open, go deeper. If not, respect that cultural boundary and ask yourself why that boundary is there. Issues that you may wish to explore during the interview include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Early childhood experiences and parental values;
· Earliest memories of recognizing membership in a culturally different group;
· The role of religion/spirituality;
· Immigration experiences;
· Similarities/differences between couples’ interactions in the U.S. to couples’ interactions in the individual’s culture;
· School experiences as a member of a cultural minority;
· Experiences with subtle racism or discrimination;
· Experiences with overt racism or discrimination;
· Ways the person/couple chose his/her/their career(s) or made career choices;
· The experience of being culturally different;
· Attitudes regarding the majority culture;
· Extent of desire to assimilate majority cultural attitudes, values, and lifestyles;
· Feelings of oppression;
· Feelings of anger toward majority culture;
· From the person’s/couple’s own cultural background, any potential racist attitudes toward or stereotyping of individuals from other particular cultures; and/or
· Strengths identified from the person’s/couple’s cultural background that help him/her/them cope with living in the U.S.
Once your interview is complete, you will answer the questions listed below. First person may be used in your answers, and you must observe correct and current APA style. The paper must have a correct title page, and you must use a reference page (no abstract is needed). A word estimate is beside each question; however, the quality of your answer is more important than the word count. You may expand further, but you do not have to do so.
In addition, your paper must be supported by at least 2 scholarly sources, and at least 2 internet and/or media sources, used in project part 1.

Throughout the course, you will be exploring various aspects of culture and intercultural communications. Your final assignment in this course will be to
conduct an extensive oral history interview with a person who is somewhat older than you and from a culture or subgroup that you are not a member of.
This person can be a relative or acquaintance who is from a different generation. It can be someone who immigrated to this country either recently or some time ago. Or, it can be someone who belongs to a different subgroup from you and whose cultural experiences you believe would be very different from your own. Obtain permission from the person you are interviewing to record the conversation (either an audio or a video and audio recording) or to take handwritten notes during the interview.
Your overarching goals during the oral history interview are as follows:

To learn more about the culture and subcultures to which your interview subject belongs.
2.
To determine what issues they encountered in terms of intercultural communications.
3.
To relate concepts you have studied in this course to the experiences of this person.

Mark Davis has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) for reckless driving, speeding, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter as the result of a crash that occurred on a night out with his friends. Mark has been out on bail and pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned. The Judge set a date for Mark's trial and his defense team has been working to collect information about the technology used by the Highway Patrol to reconstruct the crash.
District Attorney O'Malley offered Mark a plea bargain, but Mark chose to take his chances at trial. Mark's attorney, Mr. Chen Long, advised Mark that accepting the plea offer was completely up to Mark, although Mr. Long advised against accepting it because the defense planned to highlight mistakes made by law enforcement during the investigation that could create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors.
The trial begins and during the voir dire of potential jurors, several individuals are excused because they have previous knowledge of Mark's case from the media. Two individuals stated that they could not be impartial because they had loved ones killed in alcohol related crashes as well. Eventually, two men and ten women were seated in Mark's trial.
District Attorney O'Malley presented the State's case clearly and concisely depicting a night on the town full of heavy drinking, which ultimately resulted in Mark's actions causing the death of one individual and injuring four others. Highway Patrolman Green explained to the jury that he immediately suspected alcohol when he arrived on scene because Mark appeared to be intoxicated when they spoke. Following the Judge ruling that it was admissible and not prejudicial, Sergeant Rodney Monroe, from the Highway Patrol Reconstruction Team presented their reconstruction complete with a high-tech computer animated reenactment of the crash. During the cross examination, Defense Attorney Long challenged the reconstruction because the Defense Crash Reconstruction Expert had discovered errors in the mathematical calculations for vehicle speed. The jury appeared to have liked the reconstruction very much regardless of the errors highlighted by the defense.
Mark was convicted of DWI, four counts of felony assault, and one count of involuntary manslaughter; however, he was acquitted of reckless driving and speeding. The Jury said they could not convict Mark of those offenses because of the mistakes made by law enforcement officers during the investigation.
Because Mark pleads not guilty, but was convicted during trial and had two prior DWI offenses, he was sentenced to ten years in the State Prison. Professionals must work with families to understand cultural and linguistic characteristics specific to each child. This is critical in determining whether a child’s experiences are typical of someone coming from a different background as opposed to a true disability. These issues can be complex as exceptionalities are seen across cultures as well.
Review the following scenario:
Kayin is an eight-year-old boy in the third grade. His teacher, Mr. Bledsoe, has been very concerned about his problems with reading. He also has difficulty socially, and seems withdrawn, with few, if any, friends. Kayin avoids eye contact with most people, but this is more pronounced with adults. He also becomes very frustrated at times, crying and ripping up his work.
Kayin has been enrolled in the same school since kindergarten. However, Mr. Bledsoe knows that his family is originally from Nigeria and they return every summer to visit family. Although Kayin’s parents speak English fairly fluently, they have a pronounced African accent. Mr. Bledsoe remembers learning that it is an act of respect to avoid eye contact with adults in some cultures, but he cannot remember whether this is true of Nigerian culture.
Mr. Bledsoe has been hesitant to raise the possibility of a disability because he does not know how much of Kayin’s struggles can be attributed to growing up in a bicultural and bilingual home or to Kayin’s own personality.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. - 1. As the world continues to become more diverse and multicultural, you will find yourself interacting with individuals who differ from you in many significant ways. This diversity brings with it many great benefits but it can also impact communication and relationships in unexpected ways. Consider if you, as a professional in Human Services, have to provide in-home services to a family that has recently immigrated to the United States from another country. How might this diversity impact expectations, communication, and relationships of all involved? Could you gather some information related to their culture prior to engaging with them? Purpose: This interview and paper project focuses on exploring and learning about cultural differences in interpersonal relations and communication. One way to safely experience and identify differences is through interviewing a person from a culture significantly different from your own. Overview: Students will conduct an interview with an individual who identifies as being of another culture. The person interviewed must differ from you in at least two significant ways (culture, religion, primary language, country of origin). There are two parts of this project: the first being the interview, and the second is academic research on aspects of your interviewee's culture. Your written explanation, description, and outside validation (through references) will point out the differences you find between cultures. The paper must follow APA style, and will include a title page, reference page, and running header. No abstract is needed.
- 2. APA standards include size 12 Times New Roman font, double-spaced and normal margins. You may use the following as guidelines for headers: Introduction Introduce your interviewee, how you know the person, and describe the cultural differences and reason for choosing this person. Include a thesis statement explaining the research aspect of the assignment. Clearly identify the part of the culture that you chose to explore. Interview Write a narrative summary of the interview, where you paraphrase the discussion and highlight what you've learned about the cultural differences of the interviewee. You may relate some of the interview to course material. Related Research This section will cover the research aspect of the assignment. Explain why the topic interested you, and continue your discussion using APA standards for in-text citing. Remember to integrate what you learned about your interviewee in with your research. Conclusion A strong conclusion paragraph is expected to summarize and tie together what you learned throughout the interview and research.
