Mr. Carl Pollard served as a consultant for the Young Men's Peer Leadership Initiative (YMPLI) at BMS @ Jefferson SBHC. The YMPLI trains at-risk youth leaders to engage their peers and spread anti-violence messages through age-appropriate lessons on topics like conflict resolution and violence prevention. Mr. Pollard mentored 25 at-risk young men exposed to gangs, identifying and training youth leaders to deliver health information to reinforce positive behavior change. During his time, Mr. Pollard created a sustainable support system for continual succession of youth participants to develop life skills and become active community advocates, providing alternatives to gang violence.

To Whom It May Concern:
Please be advised Mr. Carl Pollard served as a consultant for our Young Men’s Peer Leadership Initiative
(YMPLI). The YMLI is an expansion of a proven Peer Education model – engaging youth where they
gather (in school settings) rather than taking on the often challenging task of recruiting during out of
school time, building on existing programs by creating value added expansion (stipends and socializing
activities), maximizing on youth capital (youth reaching other youth) and training them to turn-key
information thereby promoting ongoing education through creating opportunities for meaningful
application of the learning (peer health education and community outreach) and these applications take
place during school and out of school time when youth are most at risk for negative behaviors. Mr.
Pollard spearheaded a number of various activities in addition to mentoring 25 at risk young men who
have either been exposed or engaged in gang activity that reside in the NYCHA housing. Mr. Pollard’s
task were of the following: -Identify and train young community leaders who will engage their peers in a
campaign to spread anti-violence,
-Deliver age-appropriate lessons on an array of life skills topics (including conflict resolution and
violence prevention),
-Model positive life choices, and Share health and social service information that will help to
reinforce positive behavioral change.
During Mr. Pollard’s time here he was able to create a sustainable support system that allows a continual
succession of participants to scaffold their newly acquired life skills to become active, engaged youth
leaders/health advocates in their right and to provide them with relatable and relevant alternatives to
engaging in violence and gang activity.
