YESTERMORROW’S CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS in Sustainable
Building & Design, Woodworking, and Natural Building provide in-depth
opportunities for developing critical thinking skills, intuitive design
strategies, and technical know-how. All provide the credentials to expand
career opportunities and the resources for living creatively by the work of
your own hands.
These intensive, hands-on education programs are offered in a time frame
substantial enough for meaningful growth, but short enough to manage
around other personal and professional obligations.
Each student receives personal instruction, with encouragement to explore
individual objectives. When you complete a Yestermorrow program, you
have a comprehensive and current awareness of the field and the skill set
to pursue further practice.
“Coming into the Certificate program, I had little experience in the finer aspects of
woodworking. After the program, I was able to jump immediately into paying work as a
cabinetmaker. I’m excited to use these skills to create my business and the kind of life
I envision for myself.” — matt hastings, grain design studio, vermont
The specialized knowledge gained through one of Yestermorrow’s
Certificate Programs will prepare you to achieve your career goals
and realize your personal design/build aspirations. Our programs give you a
framework to pursue your education in non-traditional ways, use your hands
to explore solutions, discover innovative alternatives to the status quo, and
connect with others who want to teach, to learn, and to make a difference.

ratio (1:4) ensures that students receive
daily personal instruction from professional
craftspeople committed to sharing their
knowledge and skills.
The program’s focus on practical skills
and techniques and creative problem
solving provide real opportunities in
the real world. Recent graduates of the
Woodworking Certificate program have
earned apprenticeships with nationally

SEMESTER PROGRAM“I see an advantage in Yestermorrow’s program for a student like me. With design and building work
under my belt, plus a strong environmental education, I become something very different than the
traditional architect, tradesman, or environmentalist.” — austin anderson, new york university ’12
The Yestermorrow—UMASS SEMESTER IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN/BUILD
offers students and recent graduates the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary,
whole-systems thinking while developing fundamental technical skills in architecture
and construction. The full-immersion, credit-bearing semester in green building and
design complements architecture, building science, engineering, and environmental
design majors and has wide application in liberal arts curricula.
In this program, students translate theory into practice, ultimately building an
architecturally innovative high-performance shelter that they collaboratively
design. Students gain experience in team design and facilitation as well as project
management. They develop their own positions and arguments for good design and
sound ethical and environmental building practice. They leave knowing how to use
a variety of hand and power tools and feel comfortable on a building site. They are
empowered with the ability and confidence to measure and implement appropriate
technology now and into the future.
And they do this all while developing a tight network of friends and academic and
professional colleagues. Nowhere else can liberal arts students get this level of
intensive, hands-on instruction for college credit from leaders in the fields of design/
build and green building. The Yestermorrow semester offers admission to highly
motivated undergraduates and recent graduates from any major at any accredited
degree-granting institution of higher education—no previous architecture or building
experience is necessary.

Yestermorrow’s instructors are always
pushing the boundaries of their
respective fields, always seeking to build
it better, make it more beautiful, and
reduce the environmental impact.
Architect and planner Mac Rood has
been teaching courses at Yestermorrow
since the school’s inception more than
thirty years ago. Many of the themes that
permeate his residential and community-
scale design classes revolve around
energy self-sufficiency, vibrant “smart
growth” village design, and adaptive
reuse of historic structures.
Not surprisingly, Mac, along with his
professional partner Rob Bast, is
currently developing Green Street, a
walkable community designed to minimize
the need for automobiles and capitalize
on existing infrastructure in the village of
Hinesburg, Vermont. The intention is to
provide an antidote for sprawl.
Green Street will eventually have 23
residences compactly clustered in order
to preserve adjacent agricultural land. All
buildings will be linked by an elevated
promenade which provides easy, safe
access to all parts of the community. A
100-year-old barn will be restored as a
common building for residents.
A high energy standard and an installed
32 KW photovoltaic array means Green
Street energy use will be low and
primarily from renewable sources. And
perhaps the best part of Green Street is
that it is directly adjacent to the historic
village, within 500 feet of the elementary
school, grocery store, town hall, and cafe.

YESTERMORROW PROVIDES YOU WITHTHE KNOW-HOW TO MAKE A LASTING IMPACT IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY. WE WELCOME YOU. WWW.YESTERMORROW.ORG • +1.888.496.5541 Yestermorrow’s instructors are always pushing the boundaries of their respective fields, always seeking to build it better, make it more beautiful, and reduce the environmental impact. Architect and planner Mac Rood has been teaching courses at Yestermorrow since the school’s inception more than thirty years ago. Many of the themes that permeate his residential and community- scale design classes revolve around energy self-sufficiency, vibrant “smart growth” village design, and adaptive reuse of historic structures. Not surprisingly, Mac, along with his professional partner Rob Bast, is currently developing Green Street, a walkable community designed to minimize the need for automobiles and capitalize on existing infrastructure in the village of Hinesburg, Vermont. The intention is to provide an antidote for sprawl. Green Street will eventually have 23 residences compactly clustered in order to preserve adjacent agricultural land. All buildings will be linked by an elevated promenade which provides easy, safe access to all parts of the community. A 100-year-old barn will be restored as a common building for residents. A high energy standard and an installed 32 KW photovoltaic array means Green Street energy use will be low and primarily from renewable sources. And perhaps the best part of Green Street is that it is directly adjacent to the historic village, within 500 feet of the elementary school, grocery store, town hall, and cafe.
