Yet standing
1. Yet Standing``
1 Kings 19: 11-13 (NKJV)
“Then He [God] said, "Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord."
And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the
mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was
not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in
the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the
fire; and after the fire a still small voice. 13 So it was, when Elijah heard it,
that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the
entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, "What are
you doing here, Elijah?" “
How many times have you heard this statement: “I’m glad
live here on the East Coast!” But in the past 3 weeks
we have seen earthquakes, after-shocks, hurricanes,
tropical storms, flooding, power outages, homelessness,
and destruction. And there is a fire loose in Texas.
But God is asking the question:”Where are you and what
are you doing here?”
In our background scripture, Elijah had just succeeded
in one of the most amazing victories in history but he
received a threat from Jezebel and suddenly found
1
2. himself in a cave on Mount Horeb also known as the
mount of God. It was the place of the burning bush--
the place where God revealed Himself and proclaimed His
name to Moses. It was the place where God made His plan
more obvious and made Moses’ afflictions understood.
In the place where we are, in the state that we’re in,
and in the season we stand, God is revealing Himself
and proclaiming His name. When Elijah saw the great and
strong wind, he stood. When the earthquake hit, he
stood. When the fire rose, he stood. But when a still
small voice came from God, he wrapped his face in his
mantle as God spoke: “What are you doing here, . . ?”
We have reached a new season of faith and a new season
of power just like Job who said: “I have heard of You
by the hearing of the ear but now my eye sees You.” The
Lord is raising up a generation that sees Him and seeks
Him. It is a generation that lives well today but
expects even greater tomorrow. It is a generation of
strength today but sees greater glory tomorrow. It is a
generation with hands full today but expects to operate
in a greater capacity tomorrow. It is a generation of
full faith for today and full hope for tomorrow. It is
a generation that has been prepared by answered pain,
prepared by answered trouble, prepared by answered
challenges, and prepared by answered successes.

3. Pray with us as we share: “Yet Standing.”
The word, yet, means “and despite this.” It also means
“nevertheless.” It means “even or still.” And it means
“now as opposed to later.”
“Yet” suggests that we have previously encountered
unusual situations, storms of great magnitude, and
circumstances of great challenge. They have been
natural to alarm the physical man. They have been
supernatural to test the peace of man.
Do you recall the song, “Leaning on the Everlasting
Arms?” Inside it the words say “leaning, leaning safe
and secure from all alarms!” An alarm is not simply a
warning device; it is a security check. It is a peace
check. It is a stability check. It is a strength check.
It is a revelation check and a knowledge indicator.
Isaiah 33: 6 says that “wisdom and knowledge will be
the stability of your times.” Time has not simply been
an experience. Time has been a classroom. Time has been
a teacher. Time has had a voice. Time has had a plan.
Time has had instructions. Time has had a purpose of
preparation to empower us for this hour of trial and
testing that we might walk in assurance and live in
peace.

4. In Isaiah 32: 18 God speaks and says: “My people will
dwell in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings,
and in quiet resting places.”
PEACE is the line God has drawn between His people and
the rest of the world. They will know us by our peace.
We will endure the same storms as they do and often at
the same time. We will face the same afflictions as
they do and probably at the same time. In Exodus 9: 16
God speaks to Pharaoh in Egypt and says that I have
raised you up so the whole world will watch Me defeat
you! God allowed satan a season of influence that he
might be defeated before the eyes of the whole world.
The storms we see in the natural are a revelation
concerning the storms in the supernatural. The seed
sown is natural; the seed grown is supernatural (1
Corinthians 15: 45). When the natural earthquake came,
where were you in the supernatural? When Hurricane
Irene came, where were we in the supernatural? When the
floodwaters rolled and the roofs leaked and the
basements flooded and the lights went out, where were
we in the supernatural?
Psalm 46:1-3 says: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help
in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and
4
5. though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters
roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. “
Then the passage goes on to say that there is a river
flowing in the midst of the storm. That river is called
the Word of God. John 7: 38 declares: “He who believes in
Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living
water." Psalm 46, verse 4 goes on to say that the very
streams of the river of God will make His people glad
because they will find life in the earthquakes,
strength in the storms, and stability in the floods.
Isaiah 43: 1-2 says: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have
called you by your name; You are Mine. 2 When you pass through the
waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow
you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the
flame scorch you.” God is saying now what He was speaking to
Elijah then. “Don’t look for Me in the natural winds.
Don’t look for Me in the natural earthquake. Don’t look
for Me in the natural fire. I will be standing with
you!” The verse says: “I will be with you!
We are in spiritual storms where the enemy has tried
his best and his hardest to discourage, frustrate,
confuse, oppress, steal, kill, and destroy (John
10:10). He knows God’s plan cannot be stopped but he
thinks we can be. Do you recall that after Jesus had
5
6. been laid in a tomb that the Roman officials hired
their best men, their best guards, their best warriors
because they were determined that Jesus wouldn’t rise
like He said. Satan doesn’t care if we hide; he cares
that we don’t rise!
Psalm 46 goes on to verse 10 and says: “Be still and
know that I am God.” “Still” means undisturbed!
“Still” means that in us there are some key revelations
operating in us. We’ll call these “grace notes” because
once we get the revelation, we have the grace to endure
any challenge to that revelation.
1. Satan’s real name is loser! Jesus has already
defeated him and the authority to trample on
serpents has been given to us. That’s grace over
it!
2. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit because He knew we
needed help. The Helper is the Greater One Who
lives within. He leads us. He guides us. And He
never leaves us. That’s grace in it!
3. In Christ there is always a victory RIGHT NOW
because He always causes us to triumph (2
Corinthians 2: 14). That’s grace through it!
6
7. Grace is necessary to stand! To stand is to be upright,
on our feet, in a particular place, in a particular
state, at the necessary height, and at a particular
point to remain undisturbed. In the will of God we must
remain undisturbed! Standing says when the winds cease
blowing, the rain stops falling, the earth stops
shaking, the smoke of the battle has cleared, and the
fiery darts have fallen harmlessly to the ground we are
yet standing.
Isaiah 59: 19 says that when the enemy came in like a
flood, he was too late; the standard of God had already
been lifted. As we labor together with Christ there is
a standard that has been established in God’s people.
The standard is for standing.
As more than conquerors, we are strong in the Lord and
in the power of His might. Therefore, what do we say to
these things; (Romans 8: 31) if God is for us, who can
be against us? Who shall bring a charge against God’s
elect. God has justified us and whom He justifies. He
gets the glory out of every test for He works
everything for His glorious purpose. Jesus’ finished
work is manifested in these mortal bodies.
We have a record in heaven. We have a record on earth.
These times are revealing what and who we have become.
7
8. We are yet standing because God’s presence has granted
us a fullness in Christ Jesus. Our faithfulness in
holding to the truth of God’s word will be the same
truth that holds us. That truth will keep us strong and
protected in these uncommon situations. That truth has
clothed us with the integrity and the righteousness of
God.
When temptations are strong, when circumstances are
adverse, when doubts assail, when shipwreck threatens,
our faith—our firm confidence and foundation—in the
Lord and His Word grants us the grace, which is the
covering of God, to stay in the midst of the story.
When God asks you: “What are you doing here?” Your
answer must be: “I am yet standing!”
